Revisiting liberal intergovernmentalism in CFSP: preference formation and the EEAS
No full textLiberal intergovernmentalism (LI) posits that member states’ preferences are domestically shaped and align with the positions of the largest states. However, during EEAS negotiations, major states had divergent views on Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) integration, risking nonagreement. Despite the inability to counter external threats effectively, states prioritised sovereignty and national interests. This paper, based on interviews with member states and EU institution representatives involved in the bargaining process, evaluates LI’s applicability to CFSP integration. It examines the preference formation of France, Germany, and Spain during the creation (2002–2003) and design (2010) of the EEAS, the last revolution in the institutional framework of the CFSP and the most innovative body established by the Treaty of Lisbon (2009). The study contributes theoretically and empirically to understanding LI. No full textEste artículo examina el papel de la diáspora libanesa asentada en Brasil frente a la crisis humanitaria en el Líbano, analizando su influencia en la cooperación internacional y la implementación de ayuda humanitaria. A través del concepto de "remesas políticas" y la "diplomacia de la diáspora", se aborda cómo estos actores no estatales condicionan las relaciones bilaterales entre Brasil y el Líbano, y su papel como agentes diplomáticos informales. Se subraya la importancia de la diplomacia migratoria y la paradiplomacia en el contexto internacional, evaluando cómo estas estrategias permiten a la diáspora canalizar recursos simbólicos y materiales para influir en la gestión de crisis. Finalmente, se reflexiona sobre el impacto de la diáspora en la construcción nacional y la formulación de políticas transnacionales
Mitochondrial puzzle in muscle: Linking the electron transport system to overweight
No full textHuman skeletal muscle mitochondria regulate energy expenditure. Research has shown that the functionality of muscle mitochondria is altered in subjects with overweight, as well as in response to nutrient excess and calorie restriction. Two metabolic features of obesity and overweight are (1) incomplete muscular fatty acid oxidation and (2) increased circulating lactate levels. In this study, I propose that these metabolic disturbances may originate from a common source within the muscle mitochondrial electron transport system. Specifically, a reorganization of the supramolecular structure of the electron transport chain could facilitate the maintenance of readily accessible coenzyme Q pools, which are essential for metabolizing lipid substrates. This approach is expected to maintain effective electron transfer, provided that there is sufficient complex III to support the Q-cycle. Such an adaptation could enhance fatty acid oxidation and prevent mitochondrial overload, thereby reducing lactate production. These insights advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning metabolic dysregulation in overweight states. This provides a basis for targeted interventions in the quest for metabolic health

No full textThis chapter examines the evolving role of Soft Power in modern conflicts, which increasingly extend beyond physical battlefields due to technological advancements and the asymmetric nature of contemporary warfare. While traditional military superiority remains important, the inability to secure sustainable victories without influencing public perceptions has highlighted the necessity of Soft Power strategies. The chapter begins by distinguishing Soft Power from Hard Power and exploring the modern mediums through which Soft Power is leveraged. Additionally, it provides a case study on the current Israel-Gaza conflict, demonstrating how various actors employ Soft Power tactics to influence narratives and public opinion both regionally and globally. This analysis underscores the growing importance of Soft Power in shaping the outcomes of modern conflicts
Identidad judía e inclusión del extranjero. El uso del imaginario sacrificial en los libros
No full textEl capítulo analiza cómo la identidad judía y la relación con los extranjeros se expresan en la Biblia a través del imaginario sacrificial. Mientras que el sacrificio era un rito exclusivo de Israel, los profetas bíblicos utilizan este lenguaje tanto para justificar la exclusión de los no israelitas como para prefigurar su posible integración en el culto de YHWH.
Por un lado, textos como Sofonías 1,7-8 y Jeremías 46,10 representan el castigo divino a los enemigos de Israel en términos sacrificiales. Por otro, pasajes como Isaías 56,6-7 muestran una visión más inclusiva, donde los extranjeros pueden participar en el culto si cumplen ciertos requisitos.
El capítulo concluye que el sacrificio en los libros proféticos refleja una tensión entre exclusión e inclusión, dependiendo del contexto y la visión teológica del autor
Multi-Resolution Design: Using Qualitative and Quantitative Analyses to Recursively Zoom in and out of the Same Dataset
No full textA recent challenge is how to mix qualitative interpretation with computational techniques to analyze big qualitative data. To this end, we propose “multi-resolution design” for mixed method analysis of the same data: qualitative analysis zooms-in to provide in-depth contextual insight and quantitative analysis zooms-out to provide measures, associations, and statistical models. The raw qualitative data is transformed between excerpts, counts, and measures; with each having unique gains and losses. Multi-resolution designs entail transforming the data back-and-forth between these data types, recursively quantitizing and qualitizing the data. Two empirical studies illustrate how multi-resolution design can support abductive inference and increase validity. This contributes to mixed methods literature a conceptualization of how mixed analysis of the same big qualitative dataset can create tightly integrated synergies.Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research LIVE
