Abandoned farmland detection using single-year satellite images in Japan
Mapping abandoned farmlands' location and spatial pattern is essential for rural planning. Monitoring small abandoned farmland based on dynamic farmland's phenology is challenging to due to conflict between spatial and temporal resolutions of conventional satellite missions. A unique approach that combines satellite constellation imagery with improved automatic radiometric normalization method for more temporally consistent reflectance were proposed. Applying it in Ami-town, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, abandoned farmlands were identified with 3-m resolution and a Kappa coefficient of 0.81 based on satellite constellation-based timeseries data; however, the discrimination of the degree of abandonment was challenging. Unlike conventional abandoned farmland mapping approaches which targets spatially large area, our approach provides information at small, fragmented and abandoned farmland in East Asia that enables labor-saving monitoring of land use shifts.journal articl
Exploration and Collection of Vegetable Genetic Resources in Southern Cambodia, 2021
Cambodia is one of the diversity centers of vegetable crops, such as Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae crops, which could serve as useful genetic resources for breeding programs. Field exploration was conducted in southern Cambodia to collect vegetable genetic resources based on cultivation methods and characteristics. A total of 85 samples from nine crops, including 21 accessions of amaranth, 7 of wax gourd, 34 of melon, 3 of cucumber, 14 of pumpkin, 3 of bottle gourd, and 1 each of watermelon, eggplant, and maize, were collected at 36 sites in five provinces. These samples were collected at new sites, with the exception of one amaranth sample, which was collected from a site where melon samples were previously collected. Their local names, cultivation methods, and the variations in plant and fruit traits were obtained through interviews with farmers or observation of plants and fruits, such as amaranth, wax gourds, melons, and pumpkins, found in a wide geographical area of Cambodia. This information is thought to be a useful reference in the study of Cambodian genetic resources, as well as for the management of collected genetic resources.
Collaborative Survey and Collection of Brassica Vegetable Genetic Resources in the Southern Part of Shan State, Myanmar in 2019
Genetic resource exploration and collection of Brassica vegetables called “Mohn Nyinˮ were carried out in the southern Shan State (from Kalaw to Taunggyi) in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar from November 17 – 28, 2019. This survey was conducted jointly by the Department of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, Myanmar, and the Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. In this collaborative survey, 43 accessions were collected: 27 accessions of Brassica juncea (L.) Czern., 4 of Brassica rapa L., 3 of Brassica oleracea L. (Alboglabra Group), 8 of Brassica spp., and 1 of Raphanus sativus L. The samples from these 43 collections were divided into two parts; one was stored in the Myanmar Seed Bank and the other introduced into Japan under the Standard Materials Transfer Agreement (SMTA) and stored at the Genebank of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO Genebank). Multiple seeds will be distributed for agricultural research, breeding, and educational purposes as the useful genetic resources.
oleracea L. Alboglabra Group 3 点,Brassica spp.
