Field Position-Related Variations in Body Mass, Postural Control, and Isokinetic Strength in Portuguese Professional Football
Combining body composition, dynamic postural control, and isokinetic strength allows for a comprehensive physical and functional assessment of football players across specific playing positions. The aim of this study was to analyze the field position-related variations in the physical and functional profiles of male football players. A convenience sample of 23 professional male football players from a Portuguese second league team, aged 18 to 32 years (23.83 +/- 3.77 years), participated in the present study. Players from five field positions (central backs, central midfielders, wide midfielders, and forwards) were assessed for body composition, dynamic postural control, and isokinetic lower limb strength. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance; composite scores for postural control in the right and left limbs were obtained through the Y-Balance test lower quarter (YBT-LQ). Peak torque (PT) during lower limb flexion and extension was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer chair. Significant differences were found only in peak torque of the right extensors [H (4) = 9.84, p = 0.043, eta 2 = 0.37)], whereas no significant differences emerged in body mass, dynamic balance scores, left-side extension and flexion, or hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratios. Post hoc analysis using Mann-Whitney U tests with Holm correction did not confirm pairwise differences between positions. The correlation analysis revealed mainly moderate-to-strong associations between symmetrical measures (composite YBT-LQ right and left, PT extension right and left), as well as between anthropometric and strength variables, but without consistent position-specific patterns. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the physical attributes of professional football players, highlighting the general similarity of profiles across positions and suggesting that individualized training approaches may still be beneficial to optimizing performance and reduce injury risk. Future studies should extend the analysis to larger cohorts across different professional Portuguese football teams and competitions. This project was supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia—Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. Human-mediated rapid evolutionary change in european honey bees
In its vast distributional range, spanning Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and western Asia, the honey bee Apis mellifera diversified into 30 subspecies grouped into four major evolutionary lineages. Two of these lineages, M (western/northern European) and C (southeastern European), are parapatric in Europe. However, increasingly intensified queen trading is likely eroding the natural genetic boundaries and altering the continent’s diversity patterns. To evaluate the impact of this recent human-mediated gene flow, we conducted an unprecedented survey spanning 33 countries and sampling more than 1,300 colonies, including 139 from conservation apiaries of the M-lineage subspecies A. m. mellifera. We used a dual-marker approach combining the hypervariable mitochondrial tRNALeu–cox2 intergenic region with nuclear genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Both markers were highly concordant at the lineage level and European scale, showing that in the native area of M-lineage, which covers western and northern Europe, C-lineage ancestry is now predominant. This pattern is congruent with widespread commercial dissemination of C-lineage subspecies (A. m. carnica, A. m. ligustica), which is leading to introgressive hybridisation and, in many regions, to almost complete replacement of native subspecies. The exceptions to this trend are the Iberian Peninsula, Ireland, and conservation apiaries, which retain almost exclusively native M-lineage ancestry. Remarkably, even within the native C-lineage range in the Mediterranean and southeastern Europe, the Italian subspecies A.m. ligustica, the most widely favoured subspecies worldwide, shows worrying levels of introgression from its C-lineage neighbour A.m. carnica. Equally striking is the widespread presence of African-lineage mitotypes, whose routes of introduction remain unclear. Altogether, these findings raise serious concerns about the genetic integrity of native subspecies and the consequences of admixture for adaptation in a rapidly changing environment shaped by climate change and emerging parasites and pathogens. Further, these changes may affect the gene pools of wild A. mellifera populations, recently classified as Endangered by the IUCN.This work was conducted in the framework of the project Better-B, funded by the European Union, the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation, and UK Research and Innovation under the UK government's Horizon Europe funding guarantee (grant number 10068544). Development of polymer networks for the purification of stilbenes and lignans in pinus pinea and pinus pinaster
This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the use of functionalized polymer networks for the separation and enrichment of lignans from pine extracts, with the goal of valorizing forestry by-products using sustainable techniques. Lignans such as Pinoresinol and its derivatives are bioactive compounds with significant pharmacological interest, found in considerable amounts in the pine trees like Pinus pinaster and Pinus pinea. The crude extract was obtained via ultrasound-assisted extraction using an ethanol/water mixture (80:20 v/v), which ensured a more efficient release of bioactive compounds without compromising their structural integrity. A polymer network based on bis(acrylamido)pyridine was synthesized and used in a sorption/desorption process to selectivity isolate lignans. Elution with a 60:40 ethanol/water mixture allowed a notable enrichment of lignans, with the main compound showing a six-fold enrichment compared to the original crude extract.
The performance of the polymer network was further demonstrated through a two-cycle sorption/desorption process, confirming its reusability and stability, which are essential for real-world applications. The experimental design incorporated several characterization techniques to validate the presence and concentration of lignans in the different fractions. This work not only confirms the viability of using functional polymer networks for the selective enrichment of lignans but also opens the possibility for similar methodologies to be applied to related compounds, such as stilbenes, also present in Pinus by-products. The presented strategy contributes to the development of greener, more efficient purification technologies aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) through national funds FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) to CIMO (UIDB/00690/2020 and UIDP/00690/2020) and the SusTEC project (LA/P/0007/2020
Ai for anti-money laundering: the rise of llms and agentic AI
The increasing intricacy of international finance systems has heightened the demand for effective and smart anti-money laundering (AML) solutions. Conventional AML architectures, relying essentially on rule-driven alerts and manual analysis, are under increased strain given growing volumes, non-nativelanguage documents, and complex chains of transactions. Recent developments in AI, especially LLMs and agentic AI systems, have unleashed a new paradigm that could assist-not replace-AML officers' decisions on transaction analysis, onboarding reviews, and document interpretation. This study explores whether AML professionals supported by AI perform better compared to their non-AI counterparts through an experiment conducted within the Reference banking institution in Georgia.
Fifty-two employees of AML are randomly assigned to either the AI-enhanced tool group using LLMs combined with secure chatbot user interfaces or the purely traditional method group. Participants perform five common AML tasks: multilingual contract analysis, company due diligence, ownership tracing,
person-of-interest profiling and onboarding risk assessment.
Each task is assessed by four performance measures: time efficiency, task accuracy, user satisfaction, and confidence level. After completing the tasks, both groups are required to take a survey to assess subjective workload also we are measuring their time and correction of the tasks, perceived effectiveness
of the tools at hand, and openness to integrating AI into their work.
The central hypothesis is that the AI-supported group will outperform the control group across key dimensions, with striking advantages for both time-sensitive and language-dependent tasks. In addition, the study investigates whether AI use increases AML professionals' confidence in their decisions and reduces cognitive load. This is a hybrid research approach: by empirical data and participant feedback, it offers insights useful in practice for financial institutions considering implementing AI as a decisionsupport layer in compliance departments. It also adds to an emerging literature calling for humancentered design of AI in high-stakes financial environments.
The process of resume screening in the sales field faces significant challenges due to the diversity of formats, terminologies, and levels of detail. To overcome the reliance on manual analysis, this study investigated the application of natural language models (LLMs) to automate the extraction and standardization of relevant information from resumes. The methodology employed models such as GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Mini, and Gemini 2.5 Pro, as well as the ChatPDF tool and supporting libraries for text extraction. Specific prompts were designed to structure nominal and ordinal attributes consistently. The models’ performance was evaluated using metrics such as accuracy and mean arithmetic error. Subsequently, the GPT-4.1 model, which achieved the best performance, was applied to
an expanded set of 50 resumes for validation. The extracted data were submitted to a classification model, resulting in a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.76 compared to real data, which confirms the reliability of the extraction method for automatic classification. The results demonstrate that language models are effective in data extraction, with GPT-4.1 standing out. It is concluded that the use of LLMs is a promising approach for automated screening, as it reduces manual effort and increases the consistency of evaluations , having been consolidated into an integrating web prototype to demonstrate its practical applicability
Predicting Sleep Quality Based on Metabolic, Body Composition, and Physical Fitness Variables in Aged People: Exploratory Analysis with a Conventional Machine Learning Model
Sleep plays a crucial role in the health of older adults, and its quality is influenced by multiple physiological and functional factors. However, the relationship between sleep quality and physical fitness, body composition, and metabolic markers remains unclear. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep quality and physical, metabolic, and body composition variables in older adults, and to evaluate the preliminary performance of a logistic regression model in classifying sleep quality. A total of 32 subjects participated in this study, with a mean age of 69. The resting arterial pressure (systolic and diastolic), resting heart rate, anthropometrics (high waist girth), body composition (by bioimpedance), and physical fitness (Functional Fitness Test) and sleep quality (Pitsburg sleep-quality index) were evaluated. Group comparisons, associative analysis and logistic regression with 5-fold stratified cross-validation was used to classify sleep quality based on selected non-sleep-related predictors. Individuals with good sleep quality showed significantly better back stretch (t = 2.592; p = 0.015; eta(2) = 0.239), lower limb strength (5TSTS; t = 2.564; p = 0.016; eta(2) = 0.476), and longer total sleep time (t = 6.882; p < 0.001; eta(2) = 0.675). Exploratory correlations showed that poor sleep quality was moderately associated with reduced lower-limb strength and mobility. The logistic regression model including 5TSTS and TUG achieved a mean accuracy of 0.76 +/- 0.15, precision of 0.79 +/- 0.18, recall of 0.83 +/- 0.21, and AUC of 0.74 +/- 0.16 across cross-validation folds. These preliminary findings suggest that physical fitness and clinical variables significantly influence sleep quality in older adults. Sleep-quality-dependent patterns suggest that interventions to improve lower limb strength may promote better sleep outcomes. This research received no external funding
The present study aimed to understand the relationship between the profile of entrepreneurs and managers in Northern Portugal and their level of Emotional Competence (EC). To this end, a quantitative and correlational research design was developed, using a questionnaire composed of three sections: entrepreneur profile, the Veiga Emotional Competence Scale – EVCEr33, and sociodemographic characterization. The instrument was applied to a sample of 225 participants, and the data were analysed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel.
The results showed that 118 individuals were male (52.4%) and 107 female (47.6%), with ages predominantly ranging between 31 and 50 years (n=132; 58.6%). Regarding academic qualifications, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate studies were the most prevalent (40.9%). Concerning profile type, the dynamic profile was predominant (59.1%), followed by the aggressive (31.3%) and moderate (9.8%) profiles, with no cases of the conservative profile identified. In terms of EC, most participants presented a moderate level (94.7%), followed by low (4.9%) and high (0.4%) levels. The analysis revealed a positive correlation between overall EC and the dimensions of self-awareness, emotion management, self-motivation, and empathy. Furthermore, an association was found between the dynamic profile and moderate EC, as well as between the aggressive profile and high EC.
Based on the statistical evidence obtained in this study, it may be inferred that Emotional Competence (EC) may play an important role in shaping the profile of the entrepreneurs and managers in the analysed sample, influencing decision-making, leadership, and risk management. The results therefore highlight the relevance of emotional education programmes that contribute to personal, professional, and organizational development. However, it is important to emphasise that these conclusions apply exclusively to the sample studied and cannot be generalised to the wider population without further research based on larger and more representative samples
