    No full text
This report was developed within the curricular unit of Supervised Teaching Practice (STP) of the Master’s in Pre-school and Primary School Teacher Education (STE) of the School of Education (ESE) part of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB). The purpose of this report is to describe and reflect on the most significant experiences of teaching-learning developed in Daycare, Preschool and Primary School. We present challenging activities by applying unstructured materials as a tool to enhance the learning of children contingent upon their needs, difficulties and capacities. Accordingly, we were guided through the official documents also known as Curriculum Guidelines for Preschool Education (OCEPE) and Essential Learnings in Primary School articulated with the Profile of the Students Leaving Compulsory Education. During the practice with the outlined activities, we searched for an answer to the following problem in question: In which way do the unstructured materials contribute to the teaching-learning process? Thus, the ensuing goals were established: (i) to provide the children with the handling of the unstructured materials; (ii) to amplify the learnings throughout the exploring of the unstructured materials correspondingly with the interests and needs of the children; and (iii) understanding the actions of the children when they use the unstructured materials. The present study accompanies an approach of a qualitative nature and, namely, a sorting process regarding the techniques and the data collection instruments was made from the participant observation, field notes, photographic records and observation grids with previously stated indicators. The teaching-learning experiences translate to a descriptive, interpretative and reflective method, from which emerged data that displays the potentiality of the unstructured materials when they are manipulated by the children, once they get involved and once they interact with their peers leading to a greater autonomy and active learning during their developing process

    No full text
The article examines the concept of literary enquiry through two emblematic works: Dora Bruder by Patrick Modiano and Histoire des grands-parents que je n'ai pas eus by Ivan Jablonka. In Dora Bruder, Modiano explores the disappearance of a young girl during the German occupation of France, intertwining historical research and personal narrative to reconstruct a collective memory that time has obscured. In contrast, Jablonka draws on family history to trace the fate of his deported grandparents, blending historical rigor with narrative subjectivity. Through the analysis of these two works, the article shows how Modiano and Jablonka reinvent the genre of literary enquiry, transforming memory into a critical space for questioning identity and ethics, while redefining the forms of contemporary narrative. Our aim is to demonstrate what literature can achieve: preserving and enacting memory. This publication is funded by national funds, through the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., under project UID/05777/2025, DOI-10.54499/UID/05777/2025 & UID/04188/2025, DOI-10.54499/UID/04188/2025

    No full text
The growing complexity of financial markets and the need for responsible economic decisions make financial literacy a critical competence in higher education. This study assessed the financial literacy level of students from the Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) enrolled at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) and identified factors associated with their financial knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. A quantitative design was used: a survey of 161 students analyzed in Jamovi with descriptive and inferential statistics (Welch’s t-tests, ANOVA/Kruskal–Wallis, chi-square, and Pearson/Spearman correlations). Findings indicate moderate overall literacy, with stronger performance in financial planning and gaps in financial understanding. At the global index level, no significant differences were found by gender, field of study, or year of enrollment. By dimensions, there were differences by year and positive associations with age in behavioral variables: Financial Planning (r≈0.48; p<0.001) and Information Sources (r≈0.22; p<0.001). These patterns suggest that maturity and experience translate mainly into better organization and information-seeking practices, without necessarily yielding uniform gains in the global index when conceptual gaps persist. We conclude that strengthening cross-curricular financial education, through short curricular modules, practical workshops on budgeting/saving, and information literacy, can improve applied competences and consolidate knowledge, thereby enhancing academic success and social integration of international students. Implementation and monitoring of institutional financial-literacy programs in Portuguese higher education are recommended

    No full text
Using the Design Thinking methodology and the multi-actor approach, the aim was to find an innovative and collaborative perspective that reconciles gastronomic traditions with health and sus-tainability criteria. To this end, two workshops were held, bringing together 12 participants from the agri-food ecosystem in the Minho region. We concluded that the topics discussed and the solutions proposed highlighted the intrinsic relationship between local production and sustainability, empha-sizing that the proximity between producer and consumer translates not only into a lower carbon footprint but also into the socio-economic and cultural enhancement of the region. The richness of Minho products, from their flavors, textures, and stories, deserves to be celebrated but also protected and adapted to the new challenges of today's society. This study has a very original and multidisci-plinary approach. Integrating different actors, specialties, and perspectives has promoted a rich ex-change of knowledge and experience, materialized in convergent ideas. To improve the future of enogastronomy, the design thinking approach is used for the first time in literature to promote inte-grated solutions in the Minho food system.European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 101060536; Innovate UK [grant number 10041509]; Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) under contract number 22.00156

    No full text
This study explores the use of digital marketing in nursing homes, focusing on image management and communication as strategic tools to attract and retain clients. As the population ages, the demand for social services such as nursing homes increases exponentially, while the supply of these services remain limited. Digital marketing thus presents itself as an opportunity for these organisations to stand out in the market, allowing them to communicate the quality of their services. According to Chaffey e Ellis-Chadwick (2022), the most effective digital marketing strategies include the use of diversified and personalised channels, thus allowing organisations to build interactive connections and reach more segmented audiences. On the other hand, from the point of view of gerontology, digital marketing in nursing homes should be aligned with the principles of active ageing, promoting communication that reinforces the autonomy, safety and well-being of the elderly (Serviço Nacional de Saúde, 2017). In this context, the research also contributes to gerontology, more specifically to the area of marketing management. This dissertation is organised into three specific areas of analysis: the audiovisual content used by nursing homes and how it can be influencing the public perception; the perspective of managers and clients in relation to digital marketing in nursing homes; and the role of those who manage and those who use this type of communication. Using a mixed methodology, the research seeks to identify the most effective types of content, explore the impact of digital marketing on building the institution's image, and propose a set of guidelines aimed at improving digital marketing strategies in order to help institutions develop transparent and effective communication. The results of the study, which included an analysis of digital content and interviews with managers, indicate that the sector in the district of Bragança is still in a developmental phase. The manager’s perspective reveals that digital communication is often viewed as complementary to traditional channels, with its implementation constrained by limitations of time and human resources. This perception is in line with the observed reality, a predominance of Facebook, as well as informative content and photographic formats; however, these strategies generate low engagement. On the other hand, it was found that content encouraging community interaction and video formats are considerably more effective, achieving higher levels of engagement. The best-performing institutions distinguish themselves through platform diversity (such as Instagram), investment in videos, and a focus on relational and event-based content. Based on this evidence, a model of strategic guidelines was suggested to optimize digital communication in the sector, highlighting its importance in order to build trust, transparency, and emotional connection with families

Enhancing rangeland management through technology: a case study of sheep and goat grazing in Montesinho Natural Park

    No full text
The advent of advanced technologies offers unprecedented opportunities to improve the sustainability and resilience of rangeland management. This study examines the application of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in monitoring and optimizing the shepherding journeys of sheep and goat pastoralists throughout the rangelands of Montesinho Natural Park, Portugal. Two distinct flocks—sheep and goats—were each equipped with a GNSS collar to monitor their routes across seasons and landscapes from April 2022 to March 2023. The study yielded 186 grazing journeys for the sheep flock and 232 for the goats. The data collected were subsequently analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). These analytical methods were employed to discern patterns and correlations between grazing journeys and environmental variables, including altitude, topographic wetness, and land use types. The land use types examined encompassed orchards, oak forests, and shrublands. The study elucidates marked discrepancies in the shepherding landscapes of the two species under investigation. The flock of sheep exhibited a distinct preference for agroforestry zones, demonstrating heightened sensitivity to climatic fluctuations, particularly during extreme temperatures. In such conditions, the sheep sought refuge in oak woods, chestnut groves, and riparian forests. Conversely, the goats demonstrated a greater utilization of rangelands and forestlands, indicative of their superior adaptability to varying environmental conditions. Additionally, seasonal variations were pronounced, with both species modifying their grazing strategies in response to the dynamic environmental changes

Performance of 3D-structured grinding wheels with multi-layer internal cooling channels

    No full text
Grinding is a key machining process in industries that demand high precision and surface quality. However, the conventional flood cooling method is often ineffective due to the air barrier formed by the rotating wheel, which restricts fluid access to the contact zone. This causes thermal instability, high coolant use, and environmental impact. To overcome these limitations, this study investigates alumina grinding wheels with internal cooling systems, fabricated by a novel additive route. Sacrificial 3D-printed polymer inserts were embedded during pressing and eliminated during sintering, enabling multilayered channels within a monolithic abrasive matrix. This represents the first practical application, with detailed method of production, of a fully embedded cooling system in vitrified grinding wheels. Two configurations, with one and three internal channel layers, were compared to a conventional wheel under external cooling. Controlled grinding tests on AISI 1045 steel were performed at varying depths of cut, and key variables such as cutting forces, force ratio, specific energy, and temperature variation (Delta T) were analyzed. The three-layer wheel showed the best performance, reducing tangential force by up to 49.3 %, force ratio by 21.3 %, specific energy by 50 %, and Delta T by 58.6 % compared to the conventional system. A detailed thermal profile enabled segmentation into cut-in, steady-state, and cut-out zones. The greatest benefit from internal cooling occurred in the steady-state region, with heating rates reduced by up to 78 %. These results confirm that the proposed additive manufacturing approach offers a scalable route to produce structured wheels with embedded channels, improving coolant application, process stability, and sustainability in high-performance grinding. This work was supported by FCT national funds, under the national support to R&D units grant, through the reference project UIDB/04436. The objective of this study is to understand the effect of Public Domain Assets (PDA) on the Quality of Financial Information (QFI) of local authorities (Municipalities) in Portugal. QFI is an increasingly relevant, issue and there are already several studies on this topic in the context of public entities, although in the Portuguese context it is still relatively unexplored. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of PDA on the QFI of municipalities. Based on data from municipalities in Portugal, collected from the municipal portal website for the period between 2019 to 2023, a regression analysis was performed. The results obtained allow us to conclude that municipalities where PPAs are more relevant in the accounts have a higher QFI. Empirical evidence confirms this relationship through the negative correlation between the QIF proxy and the weight of BDPs in the balance sheet, demonstrating that as the weight of BDPs in the balance sheet increases, discretionary deviations decrease, reflecting greater transparency. Thus, the figures show that municipalities that value and record BDPs appropriately have more transparent and reliable financial statements, strengthening accountability and the trust of citizens and supervisory bodies. However, it appears that in election years, the QIF is lower than in other years

    Get PDF

Pharmaceuticals in the Douro basin: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk

    Get PDF
This study assesses water quality in the Portuguese section of the Douro River basin (Bragan & ccedil;a region, NE Portugal) by evaluating the presence and potential impact of pharmaceutical contaminants (PhCs), classified as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). A set of 65 pharmaceuticals was investigated for their occurrence and ecological and health impact. The extent of contamination by these compounds, and its possible effects on the aquatic ecosystem was analyzed and discussed. Additionally, the accumulation of these pharmaceuticals in sediments is investigated, providing a more comprehensive understanding of their distribution and persistence in the environment. Out of these 65 CECs, 23 were found in water and 10 in sediments. The most abundant correspond to acetaminophen, diclofenac and ibuprofen. The data obtained are used in this paper to develop an environmental indicator system, which serves as a valuable tool for assessing ecosystem health and water quality. This system provides key information to support decision-making regarding environmental management and conservation. Ultimately, this integrated approach aims to enhance the understanding and protection of water resources in the Bragan & ccedil;a region and beyond.Financial support for this research was obtained through project PID2021–127898OB-I00 (WAntRed), funded by MICIU//AEI (Spain) and ERDF: A way of Making Europe.
