Stem volume ratio equations to variable merchantable limits for sweet chestnut in Portugal
No full textThe volume is a fundamental dendrometric characteristic that helps estimate the amount and value of wood that can be harvested, and provides insight into land productivity. However, accurately measuring trees for volume calculation is both costly and time-consuming. Therefore, equations that estimate volume based on dendrometric variables, such as DBH (diameter breast height) and total or merchantable height, are highly important for forecasting forest production. However, the total stem volume alone does not indicate the amount of wood available for specific uses, such as sawtimber or biomass. Stem volume ratio equations are essential as they provide flexibility in determining the volume of wood based on the tree's various usage categories and potential changes in market demands over time. These equations allow for alternative options in obtaining volume, considering variable top diameter or height. Forest managers can use these equations to estimate the volumes of multiple logs from a single stem during integrated logging and for forest inventory purposes that require yield estimates by product categories. These tools are scarce, namely for sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.). Therefore, this study's primary objective was to develop volume ratio prediction equations based on tree dendrometric variables, including DBH and total height, for high forest chestnut stands located in northern Portugal. Both linear and nonlinear regression estimation methods were employed, with data analysis based on information collected from 466 standing trees measured using a Bitterlich’s telerescope for precise volume determination. Model validation involved destructive analysis of 39 felled trees distributed across the existing diameter classes (10-65 cm) in three adult chestnut stands. The study employed the ordinary least squares method to fit several linear and nonlinear equations to select models, with the best-fitting equations presented.The data used in this study were collected with the financial support of the AGRO Program,

Get PDFLivro publicado pela CASES - Cooperativa António Sérgio para a Economia Social no âmbito do Ano Internacional das Cooperativas 2025, proclamado pela Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas.Não imaginei, quando fui convidado para presidir ao INSCOOP que viria a ser extinto dando lugar à CASES, que me iria confrontar com uma realidade tão densa de história e povoada de protagonistas tão revelantes no pensamento e estimáveis na ação. São largos anos coabitando com esse caudal de ensinamentos aos quais não sei como guardar fidelidade, senão prosseguindo na ação que nos deixaram como herança. Vou somente citar um entre tantos que entregaram a sua vida, e o tempo mais feliz dela, à causa do cooperativismo – António Sérgio, a alma mater da moderna doutrina cooperativa portuguesa, inserida numa ideia mais geral que Sérgio definiu como «a grata substituição da supremacia do Estado pelo governo da economia pelo próprio povo ou por legítimos representantes desse mesmo povo». A ditadura que, de forma branda, muitas vezes é intitulada de “Estado Novo” rasurou, durante 48 anos, de 1926 até ao 25 de abril de 1974, de forma violenta, a memória da obra, material e imaterial, de uma plêiade de livres-pensadores que continuam, a mor das vozes, silenciados. António Sérgio é um desses ilustres, e estrénuos, defensores da liberdade de pensar para construir uma sociedade mais justa, erguida pela vontade livre dos cidadãos auto-organizados. António Sérgio deixou discípulos e seguidores que ao longo das suas vidas tiveram a coragem, em plena ditadura, de ousar empreender projetos fundados nas suas ideias, como é o caso do “Movimento
Metanoia”, que se descreve neste ensaio original, resultado de uma cuidada investigação. O seu autor, Carlos Balsa, fez-me chegar a ideia, que logo me pareceu muito interessante e estimulante, apelando à aventura da sua publicação em livro que se dá à estampa no contexto do Ano Internacional das Cooperativas/2025. Este é um preito à memória daqueles empreendedores cooperativos, reunidos neste movimento, que ousaram desafiar o imobilismo reinante na sua época, antecipando uma faceta do que haveria de ser a doutrina social da igreja. Artificial intelligence in teacher training: benefits, challenges and tools
No full textThe use of artificial intelligence has emerged as an important tool for teacher training, providing new approaches to the development of pedagogical skills, classroom management, and the personalization of teaching. This research aims to identify the most relevant AI tools for teacher training and to examine the benefits and challenges of integrating AI into teacher training, with a focus on the advantages of personalizing teaching and the difficulties associated with adopting new technologies in the educational context. The methodology used is a literature review, in which studies, scientific articles, and reports on the application of AI in teacher training are analyzed to identify the technological tools available for teaching. The results suggest that AI has enormous potential to transform teacher training, offering tools that make it possible to personalize the training process, adapting it to teachers' needs and learning styles. However, the implementation of these tools faces challenges such as the need for ongoing teacher training, resistance to adopting new technologies, and the lack of technological infrastructure in some educational institutions
Impacto da IA no ambiente corporativo: desenvolvimento de um assistente com IA generativa para assessores de investimentos
Get PDFMestrado de dupla diplomação com a Universidade Tecnológica Federal do ParanáEsta dissertação explora a aplicação prática de modelos de linguagem de grande escala (LLMs), com foco no ChatGPT, no apoio à rotina de trabalho de assessores de investimentos. O objetivo foi desenvolver um assistente virtual personalizado, treinado com engenharia de prompt e dados reais do escritório Wura Invest, credenciado à XP Investimentos. O sistema foi projetado para realizar tarefas como análise de carteiras de clientes, sugestões de alocação, preparação de reuniões e geração de relatórios de performance. A metodologia adotada envolveu o design iterativo do prompt mestre, a curadoria de materiais internos (carteiras, cenários econômicos, posicionamentos) e a realização de testes simulados para validar a eficácia da ferramenta. Os resultados indicaram que o modelo é capaz de realizar análises técnicas coerentes, alinhar recomendações ao perfil do cliente e gerar valor real à prática da assessoria. As limitações observadas estão relacionadas à extração de dados não estruturados e à ausência de conexão com APIs externas, apontando caminhos para futuras melhorias. O projeto contribui para o avanço do uso de Inteligência Artificial (IA) generativa no setor financeiro, ao demonstrar como soluções baseadas em Large Language Models (LLM) podem ser adaptadas com sucesso a contextos profissionais específicos.This dissertation explores the practical application of large language models (LLMs), focusing on ChatGPT, to support the daily work of investment advisors. The objective was to develop a personalized virtual assistant trained through prompt engineering and real-world data from Wura Invest, a financial advisory firm accredited by XP Investimentos. The system was designed to perform tasks such as client portfolio analysis, allocation suggestions, meeting preparation, and performance reporting. The adopted methodology involved iterative prompt design, curation of internal materials (portfolios, economic scenarios, strategic positioning), and simulated tests to validate the assistant’s effectiveness. Results showed that the model can deliver coherent technical analysis, align
recommendations with client profiles, and add tangible value to financial advisory practices. Limitations include challenges in extracting unstructured data and lack of API integration, highlighting opportunities for future improvements. The project contributes to the advancement of generative AI in the financial sector by demonstrating how LLM-based solutions can be successfully adapted to specific professional contexts
Some reflections on fixed-term employment contract: a double-edged sword?
Get PDFA precariedade laboral tem sido, nos últimos anos, uma realidade marcante em Portugal, evidenciando a urgência na promoção da estabilidade e segurança no emprego, com o objetivo de diminuir as injustiças sociais e evitar a segmentação do mercado de trabalho. O contrato de trabalho a termo resolutivo, enquanto modalidade excecional, visa, em regra, responder a necessidades temporárias das entidades empregadoras. Para mitigar abusos, têm ocorrido sucessivas alterações legislativas, a fim de proteger os direitos dos trabalhadores; em contrapartida, essas mudanças podem comprometer a competitividade e a criação de emprego em mercados dinâmicos (“a espada de dois gumes”). Considerando a importância da temática, para além de umas considerações gerais, faz-se uma reflexão sobre o caráter excecional do contrato de trabalho a termo. Em seguida, analisam-se as últimas alterações ao regime jurídico, com destaque para a Lei n.º 93/2019, de 4 de setembro, e a Lei n.º 13/2023, de 3 de abril, bem como as situações em que a sua celebração é admissível. Nas conclusões, analisa-se a evolução recente do regime jurídico do contrato de trabalho a termo, destacando o equilíbrio que o legislador procura alcançar entre a flexibilidade para o empregador e a proteção do trabalhador.In recent years, job insecurity has been a marked reality in Portugal, highlighting the urgent need to promote stability and security in employment, with the aim of reducing social injustices and avoiding the segmentation of the labour market. As an exceptional arrangement, fixed-term employment contracts are generally intended to meet employers' temporary needs. To mitigate abuses, there have been successive legislative changes to protect workers‘ rights; on the other hand, these changes can compromise competitiveness and job creation in dynamic markets (’the double-edged sword"). Considering the importance of the issue, in addition to general considerations, we reflect on the exceptional nature of fixed-term employment contracts. This is followed by an analysis of the latest changes to the legal framework, with emphasis on Law 93/2019, of 4 September, and Law 13/2023, of 3 April, as well as the situations in which it is admissible. The conclusions analyse the recent evolution of the fixed-term employment contract legal framework, highlighting the balance that the legislator seeks to achieve between flexibility for the employer and protection for the worker.Câmara Municipal da Maia

A GPU implementation of the analog ensemble method
No full textThe Analog Ensemble (AnEn) method can be used to reconstruct incomplete time series using correlated series.
Since the AnEn method may use data including several variables through long periods of time, its storage and computational cost may be substantial, slowing down reconstructions. This paper presents a full GPU implementation of the AnEn method, based on PyCUDA, that leads to a significant a cceleration of its execution. The implementation resorts to several techniques that seek to minimize the consumption of GPU global memory in the various steps of the AnEn algorithm, thus making room for larger input datasets. This is further reinforced by the use of batch processing as a way to automatically adapt the datasets size to the GPU memory available. The GPU implementation was tested on a meteorological dataset spanning 10 years, exhibiting a 30-fold speedup in the reconstruction time against a comparable CPU-based multicore version executed with up to 48 cores. The impact

Training Alzheimer's Caregivers: The Role of Digital Technologies
Get PDFNeste artigo procuramos compreender o contributo das tecnologias digitais para o exercício da profissão dos cuidadores formais de pacientes com Doença de Alzheimer. Para concretizar este estudo, foi formulado um conjunto de proposições de investigação: (i) Os cuidadores formais utilizam as tecnologias digitais no desempenho das suas competências profissionais; (ii) As tecnologias digitais são um instrumento importante para a estimulação cognitiva de doentes com DA; (iii) Os cuidadores formais necessitam de formação para a utilização das tecnologias digitais na sua atividade. Para verificar estas proposições, adotou- se uma metodologia de investigação baseada nos paradigmas quantitativo e qualitativo. No quantitativo, utilizou-se um inquérito por questionário. Esperamos que os resultados contribuam para a implementação de políticas mais eficazes no apoio aos cuidadores formais e no tratamento de pacientes com DA, promovendo uma melhor qualidade de vida para todos os envolvidos.The abstract should state clearly and concisely: the problem, the overall objective, the methodological approach, methods, main findings and the contribution of the article to the field. In this article we seek to understand the contribution of digital technologies to the exercise of the profession of formal caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease. In order to carry out this study, a set of research propositions was formulated: (i) Formal caregivers use digital technologies in the performance of their professional skills; (ii) Digital technologies are an important tool for the cognitive stimulation of patients with AD; (iii) Formal caregivers need training in the use of digital technologies in their activity. To verify these propositions, a research methodology based on quantitative and qualitative paradigms was adopted. The quantitative approach used a questionnaire survey. It is hoped that the results will contribute to the implementation of more effective policies to support formal caregivers and the treatment of patients with AD, promoting a better quality of life for all those involved

No full textEste livro apresenta a atividade da pastorícia na sua relação com o ambiente e a paisagem no Parque Natural de Montesinho, através das experiências dos pastores e pastoras que aí habitam e percorrem diariamente o território para pastorear os seus gados. Disseminando ao grande público parte dos resultados do projeto interdisciplinar PASTOpraxis - Adaptação local da pastorícia às alterações climáticas (FCT-MTS/CAC/0028/2020), neste livro de pendor etnográfico descrevem-se aspetos da vida dos pastores, não só os referentes às dimensões económicas e técnicas das unidades de produção, como os concernentes às relações com os elementos não humanos - animais (cabras e ovelhas de raças autóctones, cães e animais selvagens), plantas e elementos abióticos -, e as mudanças decorrentes dos processos de transformação social e das incertezas climáticas. O livro cumpre, assim, um duplo objetivo: devolver a pesquisa aos colaboradores do projeto e divulgar a realidade da pastorícia rompendo com a visão estigmatizada e passadista que perpassa foros públicos e políticos.O projeto PASTOpraxis (FCT-MTS/CAC/0028/2020) beneficiou de um financiamento nacional pela FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) no âmbito do concurso para Projetos de IC&DT para a promoção de atividades na região do Parque Natural de Montesinho
Nursing rehabilitation program to patients who underwent surgical lung resection
No full textPeople with lung cancer who require surgery as a form of treatment generally experience a decline in their functionality and respiratory capacity. Respiratory rehabilitation programs benefit the person being cared for by reducing exacerbations and recovering or maintaining lung function, with an impact on independence and quality of life. To analyze the effect of the rehabilitation nursing program on people undergoing lung resection. A descriptive, observational, correlated, and quantitative study was carried out in a cardiothoracic surgery service in Portugal. Non-probabilistic sample for convenience, with variables of functional capacity, respiratory capacity, ability to carry out activities of daily living, and resolution of diagnoses activity intolerance and potential to optimize ventilation being analyzed. Adverse events related to Re(h)ability4life program and the level of satisfaction with rehabilitation care were measured. 22 patients undergoing lung resection surgery were included, 77.3% lobectomies, 86.4% by VATS, with a mean age of 67.77 years (±7.08), and 55.5% were gender masculine. All patients completed the rehabilitation program, and no adverse events were identified. The functional capacity (6MWT) was improved with a gain of 21.68 meters. Inspiratory volume increased to 45.45ml compared to the preoperative period and peak of expiratory flow, recovering 94.75% of the value. There was an increase in the perceived quality of life, with overall satisfaction with rehabilitation nursing care being very positive. The pre-and postoperative rehabilitation nursing program positively impacts functional capacity, respiratory recovery, therapeutic self-care capacity, and increasing quality of life
