Nutritional and Biochemical Assessment of Edible Fruits From Angola's Native Flora
Angola's native flora hides a wealth of underexplored edible fruits with significant nutritional and bioactive potential. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the physicochemical and bioactive potential of some less explored edible fruits from this country, namely Annona muricata, A. squamosa, A. senegalensis, A. boehmii, Dacryodes edulis, and Strychnos spinosa. Nutritional profiling revealed carbohydrates as the predominant macronutrient, with A. muricata exhibiting the highest concentration (93.3 g/100 g dw). D. edulis, in turn, stood out for its high fat content (40.5 g/100 g dw), while A. senegalensis contained the highest protein levels (15-6 g/100 g dw). Free sugars analysis highlighted A. squamosa for its elevated fructose and glucose levels, contributing to its pronounced characteristic sweetness, whereas D. edulis exhibited minimal sugar content (1.27 g/100 g dw). Organic acid profiling revealed malic acid as dominant. Saturated fatty acids were predominant across most fruits, with A. boehmii showing the highest levels (71.6%), while A. senegalensis was enriched in monounsaturated fatty acids (45.15%). The phenolic analysis revealed a rich profile in bioactive compounds, with A. muricata and A. squamosa exhibiting significant levels of quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, while A. boehmii, S. spinosa, and D. edulis were characterized by distinct major phenolic compounds, such as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, and corilagin, respectively. Antioxidant activity was strongest in D. edulis and A. senegalensis (EC50 = 0.18 and 0.25 mu g/mL, respectively), while A. squamosa exhibited notable antibacterial activity (MIC = 0.3 mg/mL). This study underscores the nutritional and bioactive potential of Angola's native fruits, highlighting their applications in the food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. The authors are grateful to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal) for financial support from the FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) national funds to CIMO (UIDB/00690/2020(DOI: 10.54499/UIDB/00690/2020)) and (UIDP/00690/2020 (DOI:10.54499/UIDP/00690/2020)), SusTEC (LA/P/0007/2020 (DOI:10.54499/LA/P/0007/2020)), GenoCash project (PTDC/ASP-AGR/0760/2020), LEAF (UIDB/04129/2020 and UIDP/04129/2020) and cE3c (UIDB/00329/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/UIDB/00329/2020)) and for the National funding by FCT, through the institutional support to L. From Silos to Synergy: Collaborative Laboratories and the Transformation of Knowledge Production
The increasing societal importance of cutting-edge science and technology calls for a closer examination of public policies' influence on the evolving dynamics of knowledge production and transfer. This focus is especially pertinent in peripheral economies such as Portugal, where persistent structural challenges include the limited integration of highly qualified human resources within the economy. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the knowledge coproduction and transfer dynamics of ‘Collaborative Laboratories’ (CoLABs), a new form of intermediary organization in Portugal, differ from those of more traditional science-industry interface set-ups, in the Portuguese context. This research employed a deductive, quantitative, multiple-case, cross-sectional design, utilizing scientific publications as collaboration indicators and applying Social Network Analysis to map and analyze the knowledge coproduction and transfer networks of CoLABs in Portugal, comparing them to Technology Centers. The results reveal that CoLABs prioritize the creation of flexible collaboration networks and the broad coproduction and dissemination of knowledge. CoLABs are found to function as value-occupying hub organizations and serve as crucial bridging entities and are characterized by high connectivity, diverse collaboration, and cohesive research and innovation communities. The need for public agencies and CoLAB governance structures to devise strategies to enhance communication and collaboration within the CoLAB network is highlighted. This is the first study to investigate CoLABs as a new form of intermediary organization in Portugal, specifically examining how their knowledge coproduction and transfer dynamics differ from more traditional science-industry interface set-ups in the Portuguese context. This work was supported by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC): CIMO UID/00690/2025 (10.54499/UID/00690/2025) and UID/PRR/00690/2025 (10.54499/UID/PRR/00690/2025); SusTEC, LA/P/0007/2020 (DOI: 10.54499/LA/P/0007/2020).N/
Why single snp analyses fail: epistatic structural effects in honey bee CYP336A1
Cytochrome P450 enzymes are central to pesticide metabolism and resistance, yet how these proteins diversify substrate specificity while maintaining catalytic function remains poorly understood. A genome-wide analysis of CYP336A1 (a nicotine-metabolizing P450) across 1467 Apis mellifera males from 25 countries spanning the Mediterranean, Middle East, Europe, and Cuba revealed an intricate haplotype architecture. Despite the detection of only 28 single-nucleotide variants (SNPs), 45 distinct haplotypes were detected for CYP336A1. Among these, 23 haplotypes carried at least four SNPs, and four harboured more than 10. A five-SNP haplotype (D202G; M207I; I222V; V226I; Q238K) dominated at 36% frequency, far exceeding the next most common single-SNP haplotype (D262N, 9%). Interestingly, this dominant haplotype was completely absent from the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, and Oman and, consequently, from five A. mellifera subspecies: iberiensis, intermissa, jemenitica, mellifera and sahariensis. To investigate the functional impact of the identified variants, individually and in combination, we used in sillico protein structural approaches. Protein models were generated with trRosetta, validated with MolProbity, and evaluated using TM-score and RMSD via TM-Align. Structural modelling revealed remarkable fold congruency: the enzyme encoded by the five-SNP haplotype retained a near-identical fold as compared to the wild-type enzyme (TM-score = 0.998, RMSD = 0.34 Å), as did a rarer 13-SNP haplotype (2%) (TM-score = 0.998, RMSD = 0.38 Å). Individual SNPs also produced minimal backbone displacement (0.32–0.54 Å), suggesting that P450 diversification proceeds through subtle structural adjustments rather than major disruption. Moreover, most SNPs clustered within substrate-recognition regions, whereas catalytic residues remained invariant across haplotypes, demonstrating a partitioning between substrate-recognition/binding evolution and preservation of catalytic machinery.
Importantly, single-variant effects cannot predict multi-variant haplotype outcomes. As such, heavy reliance on individual SNPs for pesticide risk assessment may misestimate real metabolic capacity. This work was conducted in the framework of the projects MEDIBEES - Monitoring the Mediterranean Honey Bee Subspecies and their Resilience to Climate Change for the Improvement of Sustainable Agro-Ecosystems funded by PRIMA, and Bee3Pomics: Omics insights into molecular effects of plant protection products in honey bees (Apis mellifera) funded by the RESTART-FCT. The impact of ESG scores on dividend: evidence from Euronext- Listed Companies
This study investigates the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and dividend payout policies among European firms listed on Euronext. The primary objective is to determine whether firms with higher ESG scores are more likely to distribute dividends. Based on a database of companies from Euronext stock exchange countries, our results reveal a positive and statistically significant association between overall ESG scores and dividend payout ratios. Among the three ESG dimensions, Governance exerts the strongest positive influence, followed by Environmental and Social scores. The relationship is less consistent when dividend yield is considered as the dependent variable. Additionally, insider ownership and board independence positively correlate with higher dividend payouts, while greater outside ownership is negatively related. These findings indicate that firms with superior ESG performance and robust governance structures tend to adopt more shareholder-friendly dividend policies, reflecting a commitment to rewarding shareholders and maintaining investor confidence. This suggests that ESG considerations are increasingly integrated into corporate and policymaker interest in sustainable business practices within the European market.
A Quantitative Risk Assessment Model for Listeria monocytogenes in Ready-to-Eat Cantaloupe
This study introduces a farm-to-fork quantitative risk assessment (QRA) model for invasive listeriosis from ready-to-eat diced cantaloupe. The modular model comprises seven stages-preharvest (soil and irrigation contamination), harvest (cross-contamination and survival), pre-processing (brushing), processing (flume tank washing, dicing and equipment cross-contamination), lot testing, cold-chain transport and retail growth, and consumer storage/handling. Each stage employs stochastic functions to simulate microbial prevalence and concentration changes (growth, inactivation, removal, partitioning, cross-contamination) using published data. In a reference scenario-good agricultural practices (soil barriers, no preharvest irrigation), hygienic processing and proper cold storage-the model predicts low lot- and pack-level contamination, with few packs >10 CFU/g and most servings below detection; the mean risk per serving is very low. "What-if" analyses highlight critical control points: the absence of soil barriers with preharvest irrigation can increase the risk by 10,000-fold; flume tank water contamination has a greater impact than harvest-stage cross-contamination; and poor consumer storage can raise the risk by up to 500-fold. This flexible QRA framework enables regulators and industry to evaluate and optimize interventions-from improved agricultural measures to targeted sampling plans and consumer guidance-to mitigate listeriosis risk from RTE diced cantaloupe. This research was funded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG Sante)

Keeping physically active throughout old age is a decisive factor in improving quality of life. Regular exercise contributes to preserving mobility, acts to prevent various pathologies and provides a more dynamic, autonomous and healthy daily life.
Objectives: The main purpose of this internship was to promote the health, well-being and comfort of senior citizens, always taking into account the particularities of each individual, namely their functional limitations and varying degrees of autonomy. The prescription of exercises adapted to the reality of each user was the starting point for a person-centered intervention.
Methods: Based on an initial analysis, the participants were organized into three different groups, according to their degree of functionality and autonomy. Group 1 included users with greater dependency, mostly bedridden and with extremely reduced mobility. Group 2 was made up of people who, despite using a wheelchair, had good mobility in their upper limbs and some capacity for active participation. Group 3 was made up of users who were autonomous in their locomotion, with a lower degree of dependency.
Of the 50 residents of the Residential Structure for the Elderly, 25 took part in the proposed activities, while of the 7 users of the Day Center, 6 joined in, albeit occasionally.
Project development: The internship took place over five months. The first month was dedicated to integration into the institution, observing how it worked and, above all, creating bonds with the users in order to ensure a relationship of trust and closeness. This stage proved to be fundamental in gaining a better understanding of the participants' motivations, tastes and physical and cognitive limitations.
In the second month, a group class was held to encourage people to practice physical activity together. However, take-up was lower than expected, prompting a readjustment of the approach. From then on, I opted to work individually with the users, tailoring the activities to their specific needs. Group sessions were maintained only for traditional games, which proved to be more appealing and accessible.
During the third month, the introduction of a new activity focused on motor coordination and logical reasoning was tested. However, the level of complexity proved to be unsuitable for the majority of users, which made it necessary to reformulate and simplify the proposal.
In the last two months, more emphasis has been placed on leisure activities and social interaction, without ever neglecting personalized physical accompaniment. The consistency of practice, combined with continuous adaptation, has enabled many participants to remain involved and to reinforce the importance of physical exercise as part of their routine.
Conclusions: The results observed throughout the internship showed clear signs of a positive impact. The integration of the exercises into the daily routine, the increasing adherence of the participants and the enthusiasm with which many asked about the sessions are subjective but expressive indicators of the value that this intervention had for the group

Atelectasis after pediatric cardiac surgery use of aerobika® in pulmonary rehabilitation - a case report
Atrial septal defect represents between 15-35% of congenital heart diseases. This pathology can cause symptoms at the pulmonary level such as dyspnea, lung infection, and problems at the cardiac level such as arrhythmias, that is, flutter and atrial fibrillation. One of the therapeutic options is surgery. Although it allows for symptom relief, optimization of cardiac function, ensuring a better quality of life and an increase in the survival rate of people with cardiovascular disease, it presents several intraoperative conditions (such as mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal circulation time, anesthesia) and complications (such as pleural effusion, arrhythmias, pneumonia, atelectasis). Case report that follows CARE guidelines. This case represents a 4-year-old and 6-month-old child from Cape Verde who underwent surgical closure of an ASD by thoracotomy. Extubated 3 hours after surgery, pulmonary auscultation showed a decreased vesicular murmur (on the right), scattered rhonchi. In respiratory physiotherapy plan from the first day after surgery. Drains are removed on the second day and are diagnosed by x-ray observation – Atelectasis with enlargement of the right hemi-diaphragmatic cupula. Start Aerobika, O-PEP (oscillating positive expiratory pressure) device, with a resistance setting 3, 5 cycles 8 times a day, to add to the breathing exercises. AerobikaÒ creates positive pressure oscillations in the lungs during exhalation which may help to open and clear airways. He was discharged on the fourth postoperative day with resolution of the atelectasis. The O-PEP device improved ventilatory performance, good acceptance by the child and allowed early discharge of this child
