United States/ México Migration trends, policies, and border management

    No full text
This chapter describes pockets of disposability empirically and conceptualizes them as the consequence of migratory and asylum policies throughout the world: the fact that Tijuana is host to African and Asian migrants is due in part to the closing of Europe’s continental border, but more specifically to the closing of the United States border. I argue that U.S. actions exacerbate the precarious urban conditions in Tijuana and other border cities in Mexico and the world, creating these pockets of disposability. To develop this argument, first I will describe what I consider Trump’s war against asylum. Then, I will go into the consequences this has had on Tijuana in terms of persons who are stranded and in legal limbo. I will then analyze how this creates pockets of disposability, and, finally, I will comment on other cities that are also pockets of disposability in Europe and South America, in order to generalize this conceptualization

    Women

Something else that is important today is that women’s voices are loud. Women artists are more visible every day; special collections of women’s literature are being published more and more; music expresses a special point of view rooted in tradition and the mixture of races; the visual arts are part of diverse feminisms and denounce violence through sophisticated and/or stark aesthetic resources that make us look at it without flinching. This is a moment of visibility, of activism. Also, unfortunately, the feminine has become a trending topic, in which the market wants to make a gourmet media dish out of a political struggle. However, at Voices of Mexico, we are interested in making it clear that the moment for women has changed: although we do not yet enjoy full equity, and violence against us is measured in horrific intensity, we no longer live in silence or submission. We are a tide, a blow, a shout, work, and we make very clear what we represent for the economy: an indispensable percentage of production and the workforce.“Our voice” /Velasco Montante, Astrid, “Minimal History of Gender Studies in Mexico” / Martínez-Zalce, Graviela, “ The Diana Morán Workshop An Exceptional Space for Resistance and Sisterhood” / Domenella, Rosa Ana, “Mexican Feminisms Today”/ Lamas Marta, “Mothers Who Search Under Ground”/ Azuela, Maite, “ The Fight for Abortion in Mexico” / Ramos Duarte, Rebecca, “Whether Chance or Science, Always Chasing Neurons An Interview with Herminia Pasantes” / Jiménez Teresa, “A Review of Aaraón Díaz’s Short Documentary” / Migranta con M de Mamá, Hall, María Cristina, “The Inclusion Of Feminist Art in Mexico” / Martínez Rivera, Margarita, “Self-portraits” / Hernández, Gretta, “Voices of Mexico: Two Women in Ancestral Song” / Velasco, Mariana and Marcovich, Gustavo, “Black Hen Powder: Feminism’s Beginnings in Mexican Art” / Medrano Flor, Marifé, “ Dissertation on the Origin of Sight” / Díaz Castelo, Elisa, Illustrations by Fonseca, Armando, “Young Mother” / by Puga, Maria Luisa, Illustrations by Mijangos, Amanda, “Ana Segovia’s Painting: Feeling Uncomfortable in The Categories We Inhabit” / Gómez, Christian, “The Republic of Letters” / Meza Corona, Aline, Illustration by Palomino, Juan, “Vindictas. The Fight for Abortion in Mexico

The year that is coming to a close has brought enormous strides forward in Mexico for the regulation of abortion. To understand these advances, first it must be said that in most of Mexico, as in a large number of Latin American countries, abortion is a crime. As a result, women and gestating individuals who interrupt a pregnancy, as well as those who assist them, are subject to being declared criminals and punished with sentences that, in the case of Mexico, range from fifteen days to six years in prison, plus fines, community service, or medical or psychological treatment when freed. I mention “most of Mexico” because in this country, each state or federal jurisdiction determines whether abortion is a crime and what sanctions will be applied to those found guilty of it (p. 23)

“In the best democratic systems, minorities —social, economic, gender, racial, ethnic, cultural, and even political minorities— play a fundamental role in determining the public policies that affect them, and in general their rights are respected. Today, this description might seem more like a fairy tale than an undeniable reality. In fact, very few modern states —if any— could presume to fully have a society of this type…” (p. 86)
