Homage to Manuel Alegre
No full textThe bibliographic exhibition “Homage to Manuel Alegre” was created by the Beato Pellegrino Library from 2/5/2023 to 11/5/2023, in conjunction with the study day “Manuel, name of a poet and of the future. Alegre, name of the language and of Portugal", organized by the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies of the University of Padova to celebrate May 5, World Language and Culture Day in Portuguese. The selection of the volumes was curated by the library with the support of José Vieira, reader of Portuguese from the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies.
Autographed books, photographs and documents attesting to the University of Padua\u27s relationship with the Portuguese poet were also exhibited. In particular, two events were highlighted: the creation in 2009 of the Cátedra Manuel Alegre sponsored by the Instituto da Cooperação and Lingua Camões and the awarding to Alegre in 2017 by the University of Padova of the honorary degree in Languages and European and Euro-American literatures.
On the day of the conference, Manuel Alegre and the Portuguese ambassador Bernardo Futscher Pereira visited the exhibition.L’esposizione bibliografica “Omaggio a Manuel Alegre” è stata realizzata dalla Biblioteca Beato Pellegrino dal 2/5/2023 al 11/5/2023, in concomitanza con la giornata di studi “Manuel, nome di poeta e di futuro. Alegre, nome di lingua e del Portogallo”, organizzata dal Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Letterari dell’Università degli Studi di Padova per celebrare il 5 maggio, Giornata mondiale della lingua e della cultura in portoghese. La selezione dei volumi è stata curata dalla biblioteca con il supporto di José Vieira, lettore di Portoghese del Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Letterari.
Sono stati esposti anche libri autografati, fotografie e documenti che attestano il rapporto dell’Università di Padova con il poeta portoghese. In particolare, sono stati messi in evidenza due eventi: la creazione nel 2009 della Cátedra Manuel Alegre patrocinata dall’Instituto da Cooperação e da Lingua Camões e il conferimento ad Alegre nel 2017 da parte dell’Università di Padova della laurea honoris causa in Lingue e letterature europee e euroamericane.

Building in Prehistoric Cyprus. Tracing Transformations in the Built and Social Environment of Early Cypriot Communities
No full textThe study of architecture, from the selection, procurement and processing of raw materials, to the construction and use of buildings as spaces of action and interaction, can provide major insights into the social organisation of ancient communities.
Architecture, as a way of organising space and encoding meaning, plays an active role in structuring movement and socio-cultural identities and provides a range of potential avenues for exploring social motivations and rationales in particular contexts and environments, both at the individual and community levels.
This book examines ‘architecture’ as key media for analysing socio-cultural narratives in prehistoric Cyprus and exploring the formation, reproduction and development of early Cypriot communities. In particular, the volume aims at moving beyond the classification of architectural forms and functions and exploring the social, ideological, economic and political transformations that characterised the Cypriot prehistory from the late Aceramic Neolithic until the advent of the Late Bronze Age (7000/6800-1750/1700 Cal BC) by using architectural evidence as the focal analytical data-set.
The interest of this study is not only in how people constructed buildings but also in how buildings contributed to the construction and definition of new socio-cultural and economic identities during Cypriot prehistory.
Through a detailed review of the existing architectural data-set available for prehistoric Cypriot settlements, the book aims to understand how the development of new concepts of architecture, and the increasing appearance of social, cultural and economic forms of complexity are mutually constituted

Sofocle, Niobe. Introduzione, testo critico, commento e traduzione
No full textNiobe è la protagonista di un mito di superbia e punizione, delitto e castigo. La donna aveva offeso Leto paragonando la propria numerosa prole a quella della dea, che aveva generato due soli figli, Apollo e Artemide.
Questi ultimi, per punirla, uccisero ciò che Niobe aveva di più caro: i suoi figli. Proprio questa parte del mito – la più cruenta e la più complessa da rappresentare – fu scelta da Sofocle come punto focale della sua tragedia Niobe, ora conservata solo in frammenti, dai quali tuttavia si possono ancora apprezzare la spettacolarità e il grande impatto emotivo del dramma. In questo volume il lettore troverà il testo critico dei frammenti e delle testimonianze, corredato della traduzione italiana e di un ricco commento.
Oltre a presentare criticamente i dati testuali e papirologici, il volume propone una ricostruzione dell’azione del dramma e offre una puntuale analisi delle sue qualità drammaturgiche e letterarie.

Sottocollana: Fonti, testi e commenti 2.The myth regarding Niobe was already extremely famous in ancient times, and her actions still resonate today. She offended the goddess Leto by comparing her own offspring to Leto’s two children, Apollo and Artemis, and was punished by the goddess in a horrendous way, with the killing of her children.
Her legendary mourning is already quoted in one of the most famous passages of the Iliad, during the encounter between Achilles and Priam.
While Aeschylus, in his now fragmentary play on Niobe, represented on stage her silent mourning on the tomb of her children (a prelude to her metamorphosis into a forever weeping stone on Mount Sipylus), Sophocles focused his tragedy on the most shocking part of the myth: the killing of Niobe’s sons and daughters by Apollo and Artemis.
This volume contains a new critical edition of Sophocles’ Niobe with a translation and a commentary.
The text also includes fragments and testimonia that were not taken into account in the fourth volume of TrGF by Stefan Radt.
The papyrus fragments and testimonies have been re-edited following direct personal re-examination of the original manuscripts.
The introduction focuses on the content and mutual collocation of the fragments and testimonies, proposing a new dispositio fragmentorum (accompanied by a new numeration).
This new disposition will shed new light on the overall reconstruction of the plot of the tragedy and of its staging. In the commentary, testimonia and fragments, in which the text is preserved in full or can be at least partially reconstructed, are followed by an Italian translation.
The translation is followed by a general introduction in which the content and the context of each fragment and testimony are given, together with a metrical analysis of the passage (in the case of poetic fragments) and a commentary that examines textual and papyrological problems, as well as aspects of vocabulary, grammar and syntax, trying also to reconstruct key scenes of the play and their staging. Visual representations of Niobe’s myth that are useful for understanding important details of the story are discussed and examined within the commentary.
The volume is closed by an appendix that considers four fragments to which Radt refers at the end of his introduction to the Niobe. These fragments have been attributed to this play in the past but should not be considered as part of it now, either because their attribution is erroneous or, at best, because it is extremely doubtful.
