Metafore e linguaggio figurato nel Medioevo e nell’opera di Dante
No full textThis book offers an innovative analysis of Dante’s figurative language in relation to both the theoretical framework developed in his works and the discursive strategies realised in his poetry. In doing so, it also provides an overview of Medieval theories of figurative language, with their respective concerns and overlaps. The first part, composed of four chapters, explores how Dante discusses figurative language in a selection of crucial passages from Vita nova, De vulgari eloquentia, Convivio, the epistle to Cangrande, Monarchia, and the Commedia.
Each of these passages is investigated with respect to the specific issues at stake in each work, thus tracing a clear progression in Dante’s thought on figurative language, which is mirrored by an increasingly complex and conscious metaphorical practice.
Such issues are then contextualised in the wider picture of the various theories of figurative language established by different Medieval disciplines (artes poetriae; artes dictaminis; biblical exegesis; artes praedicandi; epistemology). The second part provides an in-depth analysis of metaphors in Dante’s Commedia, through a close reading of multiple case studies.
This section presents the methodology adopted for the identification and classification of Dante’s metaphors, and its main outcomes in terms of both quantitative and qualitative data. Its three chapters explore the linguistic components of the metaphors (meaning shift, morphology, syntax), then their stylistic features (semantics and pragmatics), and finally their distribution and mutual connections.
The contemporary approaches adopted throughout the book contribute to the increasing complexity of Medieval disciplines dealing with figurative language.

Nel Medioevo si sviluppano ampie riflessioni sugli usi propri della lingua, gli ornamenti stilistici e i vari significati di un testo. Dante si appropria di queste elaborazioni teoriche per legittimare il proprio uso del linguaggio figurato e per dar vita a un articolato sistema di metafore che rinnovano la lingua, realizzano complesse strategie discorsive e istituiscono fitte reti di connessioni.
Questo volume si propone di intrecciare una storia delle teorie medievali sul linguaggio figurato con un esame delle riflessioni dantesche e con un’analisi multifocale delle metafore della Commedia.

These studies provide a broad overview of the art of the South Caucasus and beyond; from Christian Art (the furnishings of the Basilica of the Nativity; the so-called crosses of St. Thomas; the illustrations of the apocryphal Gospels in Armenian manuscripts of the Vaspurakan School) to the transmigration of iconographic and symbolic themes between Persia and Armenia, to the travel narrative (Itinerarium) of Friar William Rubruk, to the Iron Age archaeological site of Taštepe (Iran), and concluding with the different architectural phases of the House of Creativity on Lake Sevan during the Soviet period.
The volume restores the richness of themes and possible research perspectives in Eastern Christian Art, highlighting the important role of inscriptions as a possible leading thread

Guide to the Principal Pictures in the Academy of Fine Arts at Venice. A Critical Edition, with Other Texts on Carpaccio and Venetian Painting
No full text“In the first place, if the weather is fine, go outside the gate you have just come in at, and look above it”.
From its opening words any of the “English travellers” for whom it was expressly written in 1877 might have surmised that this Guide to Venice’s main picture gallery would not conform to type.
Ruskin himself thought of it as an “explosive torpedo” aiming to subvert received notions not just of the modern guidebook as a genre but of the culture of travel it served, of the purpose of museums, of his own reputation as an interpreter of Venetian art and history and, more broadly still, of the very nature of art and its history.
The Guide’s idiosyncrasies have often been dismissed as signs of personal irritation and obsession, even of mental instability.
This new and fully critical edition re-examines the circumstances of its composition and its special relation to Ruskin’s mature appraisal of the painting of Carpaccio as a signal example, even in its ambiguities, of the “sacred imagination of things that are not”.
It also explores the Guide’s intertextual links with Ruskin’s other writings of the period (a selection of which are included as “Supplementary Texts”), with the aim of showing it to have been integral to the drive to moral, social and aesthetic reform generally informing his still neglected late work

No full textThe volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the 5th Postgraduate International Conference organized by the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Venice, 4-6 October 2023): A Driving Force. On the Rhetoric of Images and Power.
In the introduction to his well-known The Power of Images (1989), David Freedberg claims not only that images hold power over us, but they are also, inevitably, related to ‘power’ itself. Art is therefore a powerful and non-neutral tool. Its forms and expressions influence and manipulate the realm of the real.
Throughout human history, the artist’s creative power gave form, substance, and meaning to otherwise inert matter.
This process turned the artist into a demiurge.
Furthermore, once images are given their final form, they circulate and live a life of their own.
The 5th Postgraduate International Conference was aimed at investigating the rhetorical nature of the intersection between image and power. In 1979 Yuri Lotman claimed that “rhetoric” is the displacement of the structural principles of a given semiotic sphere into another semiotic sphere.
The Tartu semiologist’s approach implies that the “correlation with different semiotic systems gives rise to a rhetorical situation in which a powerful source of elaboration of new meanings is contained”.
In exploring these meanings from a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume investigates two main themes: the power of the image, as an autonomous device, endowed with a pervasive and persuasive character; the image as a form for representing power which addresses questions concerning the sense of authority, and its negation, namely a sense of dissidence and counter-narrations

La linguistica educativa tra ricerca e sperimentazione. Scritti in onore di Carmel Mary Coonan
No full textIl volume raccoglie i contributi di docenti e ricercatori che hanno affiancato Carmel Mary Coonan negli anni della sua carriera all’Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia.
Partendo dai temi che hanno contraddistinto gli interessi di ricerca della professoressa Coonan, tra cui ad esempio il CLIL, la formazione insegnanti e la ricerca azione, il volume apre a originali riflessioni metodologiche e nuove linee di ricerca nel campo della linguistica educativa, confermando il carattere vivace e dinamico della ricerca e della sperimentazione di questa disciplina.
Pur risaltando gli importanti traguardi raggiunti nel campo dell’apprendimento e insegnamento linguistico fino ad oggi, i contributi sottolineano anche l’urgenza di una spinta maggiore allo sviluppo del plurilinguismo, un obiettivo verso il quale Carmel ha sempre convintamente indirizzato il suo lavoro accademico.The volume collects the contributions of academics from various Italian universities who have worked with Carmel Mary Coonan throughout her career at Ca’ Foscari University.
Starting from the themes that have characterised Carmel’s research interests, including Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), professional development for language teachers and action research practice, the volume opens up to original methodological reflections and new lines of research in the field of educational linguistics. The relevance and variety of the studies here described confirm the lively and dynamic character of research and experimentation that shape our discipline.
By questioning different language learning environments (both inside and outside language classroom), educational contexts (from kindergarten to university and beyond) and subjects (students as well as teachers), the volume highlights significant gains achieved in the field of language teaching and learning so far.
At the same time, however, it makes clear the urge to further boost plurilingualism in language education, a goal that Carmel has tenaciously pursued throughout her whole career

Sono qui pubblicate le pagine dedicate da Zinzendorf al viaggio compiuto nei cantoni svizzeri fra il giugno e l’ottobre del 1764 e sono restituite attraverso il testo del manoscritto originale francese e un’ampia annotazione critica a cura di Helmut Watzlawick.

Zinzendorf was counsellor at the Treasury (Commerzienrat) in Vienna (1762‑66), Governor of Trieste (1776‑82), and later Staatsminister.
From 1764 to 1770 he travelled to different European countries: Switzerland, Italy, Malta, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, the British Isles, and Belgium.
The complete diary, which covers the period from his Saxon childhood to his death as minister in Vienna, is renowned for the regularity of its entries as well as the acute observations and critical self‑reflections of the author. Zinzendorf’s stay in Switzerland between June and October 1764 corresponds to one of his study trip to analyse the European trade (kommerzielle Studienreisen).
The diary holds rich insights into contemporary social and cultural practices such as reading, letter‑writing, family relationships, theatre and music, card‑playing, riding and walking, friendship keeping in mind the relations between the Swiss cantons and the Italian peninsula, especially Venice.
The accompanying index contains entries that elucidate the names of people and geographical places. An introductory section surveys selected topics in the Swiss diary that have never been explored systematically until now
