A Bulk‐Surface Model for the Electrothermal Feedback in Large‐Area Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

    No full text
This work deals with an effective bulk-surface thermistor model describing the electrothermal behavior of large-area thin-film organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This model was rigorously derived from a -Laplace thermistor model by dimension reduction and consists of the heat equation in the three-dimensional glass substrate and two semi-linear equations describing the current flow through the electrodes coupled to algebraic equations that express the continuity of the electrical fluxes through the organic layers. The electrical problem lives on the surface of the glass substrate where the OLED is mounted. The source terms in the heat equation result from Joule heating and are concentrated on the part of the boundary where the current-flow problem is formulated. Schauder's fixed-point theorem is used to establish the existence of weak solutions to this effective system. Since the heat source terms at the surface are a priori only in L1, the concept of entropy solutions for the heat equation is worked with

Theoretical Investigation of Carrier Transport and Recombination Processes for Deep UV (Al,Ga)N Light Emitters

    No full text
Aluminium gallium nitride ((Al,Ga)N) has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential for highly efficient light emitters operating in the deep ultra-violet (UV) range (< 280 nm). However, given that current devices exhibit extremely low efficiencies, understanding the fundamental properties of (Al,Ga)N-based systems is of key importance. Here, using a multi-scale simulation framework, we study the impact of alloy disorder on carrier transport, radiative and non-radiative recombination processes in a c-plane Al 0.7 Ga 0.3 N/Al 0.8 Ga 0.2 N quantum well embedded in a p-i-n junction. Our calculations reveal that alloy fluctuations can open "percolative" pathways that promote transport for the electrons and holes into the quantum well region. Such an effect is neglected in conventional, and widely used transport simulations. Moreover, we find also that the resulting increased carrier density and alloy induced carrier localization effects significantly increase non-radiative Auger-Meitner recombination in comparison to the radiative process. Thus, to avoid such non-radiative process and potentially related material degradation, a careful design (wider well, multi quantum wells) of the active region is required to improve the efficiency of deep UV light emitters

Accuracy certificates for convex minimization with inexact oracle

    Get PDF
Accuracy certificates for convex minimization problems allow for online verification of the accuracy of approximate solutions and provide a theoretically valid online stopping criterion. When solving the Lagrange dual problem, accuracy certificates produce a simple way to recover an approximate primal solution and estimate its accuracy. In this paper, we generalize accuracy certificates for the setting of inexact first-order oracle, including the setting of primal and Lagrange dual pair of problems. We further propose an explicit way to construct accuracy certificates for a large class of cutting plane methods based on polytopes. As a by-product, we show that the considered cutting plane methods can be efficiently used with a noisy oracle even thought they were originally designed to be equipped with an exact oracle. Finally, we illustrate the work of the proposed certificates in the numerical experiments highlighting that our certificates provide a tight upper bound on the objective residual

Counterion-Controlled Phase Equilibria in a Charge-Regulated Polymer Solution

    No full text
We study phase equilibria in a minimal model of charge-regulated polymer solutions. Our model consists of a single polymer species whose charge state arises from protonation-deprotonation processes in the presence of a dissolved acid, whose anions serve as screening counterions. We explicitly account for variability in the polymers’ charge states. Homogeneous equilibria in this model system are characterised by the total concentration of polymers, the concentration of counter-ions and the charge distributions of polymers which can be computed with the help of analytical approximations. We use these analytical results to characterise how parameter values and solution acidity influence equilibrium charge distributions and identify for which regimes uni-modal and multi-modal charge distributions arise. We then study the interplay between charge regulation, solution acidity and phase separation. We find that charge regulation has a significant impact on polymer solubility and allows for non-linear responses to the solution acidity: Re-entrant phase behaviour is possible in response to increasing solution acidity. Moreover, we show that phase separation can yield to the coexistence of local environments characterised by different charge distributions

A porous-media model for reactive fluid–rock interaction in a dehydrating rock

    No full text
We study the General Equations of Non-Equilibrium Reversible–Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC) structure of models for reactive two-phase flows and their connection to a porous-media model for a reactive fluid–rock interaction used in geosciences. For this, we discuss the equilibration of fast dissipative processes in the GENERIC framework. Mathematical properties of the porous-media model and first results on its mathematical analysis are provided. The mathematical assumptions imposed for the analysis are critically validated with the thermodynamical rock datasets

Weak-Strong Uniqueness and Energy-Variational Solutions for a Class of Viscoelastoplastic Fluid Models

    No full text
We study a model for a fluid showing viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior, which describes the flow in terms of the fluid velocity and an internal stress. This stress tensor is transported via the Zaremba--Jaumann rate, and it is subject to two dissipation processes: one induced by a nonsmooth convex potential and one by stress diffusion. We show short-time existence of strong solutions as well as their uniqueness in a class of Leray--Hopf type weak solutions satisfying the tensorial component in the sense of an evolutionary variational inequality. The global-in-time existence of such generalized solutions has been established in a previous work. We further study the limit when stress diffusion vanishes. In this case, the above notion of generalized solutions is no longer suitable, and we introduce the concept of energy-variational solutions, which is based on an inequality for the relative energy. We derive general properties of energy-variational solutions and show their existence by passing to the non-diffusive limit in the relative energy inequality satisfied by generalized solutions for non-zero stress diffusion

Diffusion dynamics for an infinite system of two-type spheres and the associated depletion effect

    Get PDF
We consider a random diffusion dynamics for an infinite system of hard spheres of two different sizes evolving in ℝd, its reversible probability measure, and its projection on the subset of the large spheres. The main feature is the occurrence of an attractive short-range dynamical interaction --- known in the physics literature as a depletion interaction -- between the large spheres, which is induced by the hidden presence of the small ones. By considering the asymptotic limit for such a system when the density of the particles is high, we also obtain a constructive dynamical approach to the famous discrete geometry problem of maximisation of the contact number of n identical spheres in ℝd. As support material, we propose numerical simulations in the form of movies

Single-test evaluation of directional elastic properties of anisotropic structured materials

    Get PDF
When the elastic properties of structured materials become direction-dependent, the number of their descriptors increases. For example, in two-dimensions, the anisotropic behavior of materials is described by up to 6 independent elastic stiffness parameters, as opposed to only 2 needed for isotropic materials. Such high number of parameters expands the design space of structured materials and leads to unusual phenomena, such as materials that can shear under uniaxial compression. However, an increased number of properties descriptors and the coupling between shear and normal deformations render the experimental evaluation of material properties more challenging. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on the virtual fields method to identify six separate stiffness tensor parameters of two-dimensional anisotropic structured materials using just one tension test, thus eliminating the need for multiple experiments, as it is typical in traditional methods. The approach requires no stress data and uses full-field displacement data and global force data. We show the accuracy of our method using synthetic data generated from finite element simulations as well as experimental data from additively manufactured specimens

Optimal Rate of Convergence for Approximations of SPDEs with Non-Regular Drift

    No full text
A fully discrete finite difference scheme for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations driven by a 1+1-dimensional white noise is studied. The optimal strong rate of convergence is proved without posing any regularity assumption on the non-linear reaction term. The proof relies on stochastic sewing techniques

The emergence of a giant component in one-dimensional inhomogeneous networks with long-range effects

    Get PDF
We study the weight-dependent random connection model, a class of sparse graphs featuring many real-world properties such as heavy-tailed degree distributions and clustering. We introduce a coefficient, (deltaf), measuring the effect of the degree-distribution on the occurrence of long edges. We identify a sharp phase transition in (deltaf) for the existence of a giant component in dimension (d=1)
