Can mosquitoes (de)border? : geopolitical ecologies of Malaria in the inter-korean borderlands
This article investigates the entanglement of ecology and geopolitics in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) through the lens of mosquito-borne malaria. Against the backdrop of intensifying climate change, infectious diseases, and the geopolitical tension between the two Koreas, this study examines how mosquitoes act as agents of bordering and debordering between North Korea and South Korea. Revisiting the Anthropocene’s implications for geopolitics and border studies, we critique rigid notions of sovereignty and fixed borders and propose a shift toward understanding borders as elastic, polymorphic spaces. The reemergence of malaria in the DMZ since the 1990s highlights these dynamics, challenging conventional geopolitical narratives and revealing new intersections of geopolitical ecologies. Through the framework of geopolitical ecology, this article analyzes the role of mosquitoes as cross-border vectors, reshaping the boundaries of political and ecological sovereignty and influencing inter-Korean politics. This article argues that mosquitoes, as nonhuman actors, challenge human-centric geopolitical frameworks. This study highlights the DMZ’s dual identity as a site of both division and connection, questioning the role of disease in shaping interspecies politics and offering a novel perspective on borders as sites of geo-biopolitical intersection

Mapping herbivore-accessible biomass across a heterogeneous mountain landscape using multisensor high-resolution UAV data
Herbivore-accessible biomass (HAB), defined as aboveground biomass under 2 m, including leaves and soft branches, is a key metric for understanding ecosystem function, but remains poorly quantified. We estimated HAB across diverse habitats in the Peneda-Gerês National Park using high-resolution NDVI, LiDAR, topography and field data. Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) revealed habitat-specific effects of NDVI and vegetation height, as well as terrain, and structural metrics across plant types. Models were evaluated using hold-out cross-validation on a 20 % subset of the field data. The total HAB model performed well (Deviance Explained = 0.77, RMSE20 = 172.38 g/m2), while the shrub model performed slightly worse (Deviance Explained = 0.71, RMSE20 = 410.21 g/m2), and the herbaceous model exhibited a moderate fit and accuracy (Deviance Explained = 0.69, RMSE20 = 34.25 g/m2). Average total HAB was 1.31 ± 0.83 tons/ha, dominated by shrubs (1.02 tons/ha) compared to herbaceous HAB (0.14 tons/ha). HAB density varied by habitat, highest in shrublands (up to 1.83 ton/ha) and lowest in oak forests (0.85 tons/ha), while agricultural areas supported the most herbaceous HAB (0.68 tons/ha). These values are substantially lower than shrub biomass estimates reported in other studies (e.g., up to 30 tons/ha), reflecting our focus on live biomass <2 m. Prediction uncertainty was low (CV: 22–34 %), improving on other studies reporting up to 190 %, and highlighting the strength of combining spectral and structural data for fine-scale forage estimation. This study provides the first spatially explicit HAB estimates for the area, supporting herbivore ecology and management
Breaking the silence : white privilege intervention in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts typically avoid using the term “race”, instead adopting a broader “diversity inclusion” framework that shifts focus from racial inequalities to cultural differences. Our project aimed to introduce, test, and apply a framework to reduce color-evasive racial attitudes while fostering empathy among White participants toward racialized individuals. We tested a video intervention designed to reduce color-evasive attitudes and explored whether a self-compassion-based writing exercise could enhance ethnocultural empathy—encompassing awareness, beliefs, and actions toward racialized individuals. Specifically, we examined whether this intervention reduced White fear (anxiety about interacting with racialized individuals) and increased guilt and affective empathy when learning about racism. In an online, within-between-subjects experiment, 301 White Dutch participants completed a writing task. In the experimental condition (n = 151), participants reflected on a marginalized identity and practiced self-compassion; in the control condition (n = 150), they wrote on a neutral topic. All participants then watched a video of racialized individuals discussing the harms of color-evasive attitudes. A paired-sample t-test showed the video intervention reduced color-evasive racial attitudes in all participants. However, general linear model analyses found no direct or indirect effect of the writing intervention on ethnocultural empathy.
