Depiction of cross-cultural conflicts in selected Ugandan novels

This is a Ph.D. dissertation on a study analyzing the depiction of cross-cultural conflicts arising from Western influence on African educational, religious, and socio-cultural values in eight selected Ugandan authors, namely: Wangusa, Ocwinyo, Aloka, Nyabongo, Okurut, Kyomuhendo, Bakaluba and Kaberuka, whose literary works have not received the attention they deserve. This study analyzed the depiction of cross-cultural conflicts arising from Western influence on African educational, religious and socio-cultural values in eight selected Ugandan authors, namely: Wangusa, Ocwinyo, Aloka, Nyabongo, Okurut, Kyomuhendo, Bakaluba and Kaberuka, whose literary works have not received the attention they deserve. The study was guided by three objectives in particular. First, to analyze selected authors’ depiction of cross-cultural conflicts between Western and African educational values in Ugandan novels. Second, to assess these selected writers’ portrayal of cross-cultural conflicts between Western and African religious values in Ugandan novels. Third, to examine the selected authors’ representation of cross-cultural conflicts between Western and African socio-cultural values in Ugandan novels. The study adopts a qualitative study design to analyse the selected Ugandan novels. This study has used a qualitative content analysis for identification of the presence of certain concepts, words, phrases, themes, characters, or sentences within texts to unfold subjective interpretation of the novels. Secondary sources supplemented the primary sources. The study was undertaken in the framework of postcolonial theory. The study found that, in the education arena, the writers depict the educational systems in the novels as full of conflicts in comparison to the traditional African education. The education system is found to be characterized by irrelevancy and exemplified by cram work/rote learning, use of a foreign language, authoritarianism and corporal punishment. Besides, the system is portrayed as full of immorality, corruption, bullying and gender based biases. In the area of religion, the Ugandan novelists are found to portray cross-cultural conflicts arising from sexual immorality, religious clashes, hypocrisy, syncretism, baptismal rites, polygamy, and interpretation dilemmas. On the socio-cultural aspect; rape, virginity, arranged marriage, bridal wealth, polygamy, circumcision and community orientation are found to be the major areas of cross-cultural conflicts. We conclude that the society created by the Ugandan novelists is full of cross-cultural conflicts in the educational, religious and sociocultural arenas. These may be fictitious but they represent one historical reality. Several recommendations are made. Further literary scholarship should focus on inter-ethnic cultural conflicts within Africa, or within Ugandan space, which this study has assumed constant. Further studies could also analyse conflicts within the characters in Ugandan novels. Since Ugandan novels are very rich in orality and use of local languages and names, further studies could be undertaken to expand on this phenomena. Further studies may also dwell on the current cultural dynamics in Africa without recourse to the past

Influence of Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) on maize and soybean production

This is a research Article on the influence of Shea tree on maize and soybean production.Vitellaria paradoxa provides many benefits to farmers within the Shea belt. However, increased threats to it necessitate its conservation, and one common approach is the practice of agroforestry. A number of studies have shown that Shea tree has influence on crop production, and yet, some of these studies were done using single season experiments or bioassays using mature Shea tree components. In this study, the seasonal influence of young and mature Shea trees on Maize and Soybean yields was investigated using field experiments in Otuke district of northern Uganda, where, Shea tree parklands are dominant and Maize and Soybean are used for food security and income. Our results show that there are differential responses of maize and soybean yield to rainy seasons and physiological variations of Vitellaria paradoxa with age. We find yield reduction for maize more pronounced than yield reduction for soybeans under different Shea age (Mature and Young) for two rainy seasons. We attribute the variance to the differential maize and soybean responses to Vitellaria paradoxa shading and its differential allelopathic inhibition of these crops. We recommend that Soybeans should be preferred to maize when planting under Shea canopy

A case for urban liveability from below: exploring the politics of water and land access for greater liveability in Kampala, Uganda

This is a research Article exploring the politics of water and land access for greater liveability in Kampala, Uganda.Improving urban liveability and prosperity is commonly set as a priority in urban development plans and policy around the world. Several annual reports produced by international consulting firms, media, and global agencies rank the liveability of cities based on a set of indicators, to represent the quality of life in these cities. The higher is the ranking, the more liveable is the city. In this paper, we argue that such quantitative approaches to framing and addressing urban liveability challenges leave little room to reflect on people’s experiences of this liveability, which cannot be expressed through numbers. To illustrate our argument, we draw on empirical evidence of urban liveability challenges in access to water and land in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, ranked recently as the most liveable East African city by various global agencies and media outlets. By showing that increasing the number of water connections does not guarantee improved access to water and sanitation in the long run, first, we demonstrate how urban liveability challenges are tightly linked with land-title issues in the city. Second, we highlight the political game-playing between the central government, the opposition, the traditional leadership, and the slum dwellers in governance processes of service delivery. Finally, by arguing that urban liveability can be enhanced by broadening political participation in city development planning, we discuss some of the strategies that can be used by communities to make collective claims towards improving their quality of life and the environment

Financial Inclusion and Economic Growth in Uganda A case study of Selected Districts in Western Uganda

The study was conducted to examine the role of financial inclusion in economic growth basing on selected districts from western Uganda. The researchers adopted a cross-sectional survey design and both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used in data collection and analysis. The study used simple random and purposive sampling techniques to select a total of 194 respondents. The findings revealed that financial inclusion is significant in supporting economic growth; it upholds equitable distribution of growth benefits, transforms peoples’ way of living, enhances capital creation and empowers people to go for financial services that are germane to their needs. The study indicated that Uganda’s population living below the poverty line is falling, which sounds precise in the context of national income but very unseemly in the context of household income. While there are indicators of reduced constraints to accessing to working capital, reduced constraints to accessing financial services, effective use of economic resources to produce goods and services, those in business do not see the efficacy by government agendas geared to supporting international trade or investment. The study, therefore, recommends that there is a need for the government to review and redesign her policies on international trade business and support for homegrown investments. There is a need for quantitative metrics to ascertain the extent to which household income is proportional to national income. Several papers have recommended government interventions in financial accessibility

Monitoring and Evaluation Practices and Performance of Road Infrastructure Projects in Uganda: a Case of Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA

This study sought to examine the influence of monitoring and evaluation practices on the performance of road infrastructure projects. The study objectives were; to establish the influence of M&E planning on the performance of road infrastructure projects, to examine the influence of M&E capacity on the performance of road infrastructure projects, and lastly to examine the influence of M&E communication on the performance of road infrastructure projects, in the study context. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design and data was collected from a cross sectional of respondents (68) at a single point in time using both qualitative and quantitative research approaches to achieve the three objectives of the study. The study also adopted stratified random sampling in which the selection of the study respondents was done by probability proportional to size (PPS). The study adopted a survey approach where both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used, that is by the use of questionnaires and key informant interviews respectively. Data analysis involved; descriptive statistics, frequency percentages, regression, and correlation analysis. The regression statistics of (β = 0.438, t = 3.877, p = 0.001 >0.05) show that there is a positive and significant relationship between M&E practices and performance of road infrastructure projects. However, correlation statistics of (r = 0.586**; p = 0.001>0.05) revealed that M&E communication greatly influences the performance of road infrastructure projects. This was based on the multiple linear regression analysis results. Therefore, with the above findings, the study contributed to the phenomenon of monitoring and evaluation and the field of road infrastructure projects in Uganda by providing empirical evidence of how one can find out the influence of M&E practices on road infrastructure projects, which is a gap that has been widely missing as per this study context. Finally, the study recommends that UNRA management should uphold and continue to strengthen the M&E systems of managing various activities. It also recommends that the road infrastructure projects’ budgets should always have a clear and adequate provision for M&E activities among others

Fathers and fatherhood for sons and daughters (Fathering Children)

This paper discusses several matters concerning fatherhood parenting that is to say; the importance of fathers in the children’s life; because fathers impact a lot on the well-being starting from birth, emotional, security, confidence, environment and as children connect with others socially as they grow(Neale, 2015)(KAEBNICK, 2004).Children who have caring fathers in their future cannot become culprits of sexual abuse because of the excellent relationship they have experienced with the influence of their father’s sexual behaviours. Instead mothers act as security guards in relationship to their sons and daughters. In this paper we shall discuss several matters concerning fatherhood parenting that is to say; the importance of fathers in the children’s life; because fathers impact a lot on the well-being starting from birth, emotional, security, confidence, environment and as children connect with others socially as they grow(Neale, 2015)(KAEBNICK, 2004). Discuss matters of whether it is necessary to have a father element in the child’s growth involving whether fathers make their children proud, and it promotes the inner strength and growth, supportive and affectionate, social development as well as cognitive of the child(Baskerville, 2002)(JORDAN-ZACHERY, 2008). 2 The father’s role to the children is very important because there are central persons in the emotional well-being of the children and they are essential disciplinarians. Fathers importance in daughter’s life because they shape the self-esteem and psychological development of their daughters starting from the date of birth which is a bond key(Hazan & Zoabi, 2015)(Ling, 2017). As well boys also need their presence of their fathers because this helps them emulate what their fathers do and it bonds a good relationship(Browne, 2013). We shall also discuss what the bible states about fathers, God made it clear that fathers are created for a reason as it is stated in Exodus 20:12 “Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.” This paper will also discuss the difference between a Dad and a father, whether fathers are necessary for the child’s healthy development and how the father’s relationship to both sons and daughters can be improved. It also address matters of father’s role in parenting, their role in the family, address issues of fathers who are narcissists and if they do love their children(Johnson & Young, 2016)(KIPPEN, EVANS, & GRAY, 2007). The Author will go ahead to present how mothers stop fathers relating to their children, the levels of love expressed to both son and daughters by the father. Another important matter will be to find out whether babies also miss their fathers, how children resolve with the separation of parents, custody battles, how fathers manage parenting after separation(Edmeades, Pande, MacQuarrie, Falle, & Malhotra, 2012). Matters of what the bible addresses to the children and how much more will their father in heaven have for them. We shall also discuss matters of fathers who a deadbeat in their families how do children coup up with such parents. In conclusion what we expect from the children’s end such as; how they express themselves to their fathers, and their role in a family(Cundy, 2015)(Browne, 2013). In nutshell, all the above areas of discussion are based on purely reviewed literature
