Base hydrolysis of tris(3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6-bis(4-phenyl sulphonic acid)-1,2,4-triazine)iron(II) in aqueous, SDS and CTAB media: kinetic and mechanistic study
The kinetics and mechanism of base hydrolysis of tris(3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6-bis(4-phenyl sulphonic acid)-1,2,4-triazine)iron(II),
have been studied in aqueous, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) media at 25, 35 and 45 °C under pseudo-first-order conditions, i.e. ≫ . The reaction is first order each in and hydroxide ion. The rate increases with increasing ionic strength in aqueous and SDS media, whereas this parameter has little effect in CTAB. In SDS medium, the rate-determining step involves the reaction between and , whereas in CTAB medium, it involves reaction between a neutral ion pair, {·4CTA+} and ions. The specific rate constants and thermodynamic parameters (E a, ΔH #, ΔS # and ΔG #35°C ) have been evaluated in all three media. The near equal values of ΔG #35°C obtained in aqueous and SDS media suggest that these reactions occur essentially by the same mechanism. Slightly lower ΔG #35°C values in CTAB medium can be attributed to a higher concentration of reactants in the Stern layer. The reaction is inhibited in SDS medium but catalysed in CTAB. The former can be attributed to the anionic surfactant creating more repellent space between the reactants. Catalysis in CTAB medium is ascribed to electrophilic and hydrophilic interactions between hydroxide ion/substrate with the cationic Stern layer, resulting in increased local concentrations of both reactants

MKU Team visits UNISA
A team of seven members of staff from Mount Kenya University ( MKU) led by the deputy vice chancellor, academic and research affairs and comprising a board member, the registrar of academic affairs, the director of examinations, the deputy director of the management information systems (MIS), the technical coordinator of the digital varsity as well as the marketing coordinator visited the University of South Africa (UNISA) last month to benchmark on digital varsity. The team learnt that UNISA has set up a very highly efficient process. To attain this, the university has invested heavily in ICT infrastructure. It also promotes accountability, team work and synergy across various academic sections, besides having a well laid feedback mechanism. The placement of the first batch of Government-sponsored students in private universities since independence marks a major milestone in Kenya’s higher education sector. Mount Kenya University (MKU) attracted the highest number of applications and admitted the bulk of the sponsored students in its September 2016 intake. MKU took in 1,126 (or more than 10 percent) of the 10,000 students sponsored by the Government.
In an interview, MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof Stanley W. Waudo, described this as a move in the right direction for the country

Anticancer activities and safety evaluation of selected Kenyan plant extracts against breast cancer cell lines
Breast cancer is a leading cause of deaths among women suffering from cancer in Kenya. The current
study was done to determine anticancer activities of medicinal plant extracts against breast cancer cell
lines (HCC 1395 and 4T1). Vero cells were used for evaluation of safety of extracts. Thiazoly blue
tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used in this study. Reference drugs were 5 fluorouracil and
cyclophosphamide. Extract concentrations that inhibited growth of cell growth by half (IC50) were
estimated using GraphPad prism version 7 and 90 % of extracts showed anticancer activities. Methanol
extracts of Uvariodendron anisatum, Fagaropsis angolensis, Combretum tanaense, Hydnora abyssinica
and water extract of F. angolensis exhibited remarkable anticancer activities (IC50˂ 30 μg/ml). Methanol
extracts of F. angolensis and H. abyssinica demonstrated high selectivity index (SI ≥3). Evaluation for
safety, indicated that about 64% of the extracts under this study were non-toxic (CC50 ˃100 μg/ml).
