Does perception mean learning? Insights from an online peer feedback setting

    No full text
Many peer feedback studies examined students’ perceptions. Yet, little is known about how perceived and actual learning are related, and how they are influenced by individual and contextual characteristics including success level, educational level, gender, and academic major. This exploratory study addressed this research gap. Students from a Dutch university (N = 284) attended a three-week online module during which they were engaged in peer feedback on argumentative writing. At the end of the module, we measured students’ perceptions of learning. The results showed no significant effect of success level on perceived learning. Master students reported higher perceived learning than bachelor students regardless of success level. We did not find gender or academic major effects on perceived learning across different success levels. The findings suggest that relying solely on students’ perceptions of their learning experiences may not accurately reflect their actual learning. Students may need support to help them align their perceived learning with their actual learning achievements.</p

Citizen Science and Participatory Engagement with a Contentious Past:The Historical Database of Suriname and the Caribbean

    No full text
Citizen science is an increasingly widely used methodology for performing scientific research, in which scholars collaborate with members of the public that do not act out of a professional capacity. In the humanities, citizen science is often employed for labor intensive tasks, such as the transcription of historical sources. But citizen science entails more than the transactional creation of data: it can trigger a learning experience, build community and open up diverse and meaningful routes to involving the wider public. The case of the Historical Database of Suriname and the Caribbean demonstrates how citizen science offers multiple routes for meaningful engagement with a painful past of colonialism and slavery, while contributing to a collective redressing of the unequal availability of historical information

Michael Faure has been Professor of Comparative and International Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University since 1991, and Professor of Comparative Private Law and Economics at Erasmus School of Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam since 2008. As the scientific director of the Ius Commune Research School, he greatly contributed to the development of the Ius Commune Europaeum, which allowed for an increased and stronger international cooperation among academics, practitioners and students.During his long (and still ongoing) career, he held many other positions in academia and legal practice all over the world, and published widely on a broad range of topics, most of which are reflected by the chapters in this book. The book contains 39 contributions by 54 scholars who have collaborated with Michael Faure over the years, covering different topics and research methods. These contributions are presented in five different parts: (1) Torts and Insurance, (2) Environmental Law, (3) Competition and Consumer Law, (4) Law and Economics, and (5) ‘More views of the Cathedral’.The phrase ‘by the end of the day’ is often used by Michael Faure when summarizing or synthesizing the most important insights from a seminar, conference, discussion or presentation. It therefore is a worthy title for this book with which we want to honour Michael for his magnificent work, his stimulating contributions to the legal debate and his inspiring reflections that have added to our understanding of law and policy
