Language proficiency and study achievement of pupils with dyslexia enrolled in content and language integrated learning (CLIL)

    No full text
To date, very little research has been conducted on the inclusiveness of CLIL for pupils with learning disorders. The current study investigated whether pupils with dyslexia may also benefit from a CLIL experience or whether reading disorders should rather be considered as a risk factor for attending CLIL. To address this question, 28 5th and 11th-grade pupils with diagnosed dyslexia and 112 matched controls were identified within a sample of over 800 participants recruited in French-speaking Belgium. A first analysis showed that CLIL pupils with dyslexia had similar participation rates as those schooled in traditional education. Secondly, our study provided no clear evidence for the intuition that dyslexia could have a more detrimental effect on French literacy in CLIL than in non-CLIL pupils. For the target language (i.e. Dutch or English), our findings were not entirely conclusive as to the linguistic advantage of CLIL pupils with dyslexia. Finally, the acquisition of academic content in a CLIL setting was comparable for both typically reading pupils and pupils with dyslexia. Overall, our findings suggest that there is no measurable disadvantage for pupils with dyslexia to attend CLIL, neither for language learning, nor for acquiring academic content.</p

Optimized two-step growth of large surface two-dimensional boron nitride on Ge (001) films by molecular beam epitaxy

    No full text
The growth of two-dimensional boron nitride (2D-BN) thin films on Ge (001) has been studied, with the ultimate goal of integrating this material into Si technology. Molecular beam epitaxy was used in a dedicated ultra-high vacuum chamber. To avoid the formation of thermal pits on heating the Ge film above ∼750 °C, a two-step procedure was optimized. A thin 2D-BN buffer layer is first grown at ∼730 °C using two independent cells for B and N, aimed at stabilizing the Ge surface and to prevent thermal pits formation upon further heating. The second-step at 800 °C makes use of another precursor, gaseous borazine, in the same chamber. The growth proceeds in a step-flow mode, and results in homogeneous nano-crystalline large-surface 2D-BN films with a ∼1 nm roughness.</p

Social media use in disaster response:empowering community resilience

    No full text
This article contributes to ongoing discussions on the role of grassroots mobilizations on social media in building community resilience and tackling specific challenges during disaster events. It investigates the use of two social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter, now referred to as X, during the 2021 flood in Belgium, both in the immediate aftermath of the crisis and in the short-term. First, it analyzes the activities of Facebook community groups established post-crisis over a six-month period. Then, it examines tweets related to the 2021 flood in Belgium. Finally, it complements the social media data with online interviews conducted with Facebook groups administrators. The analytical framework employs (1) a social media data-driven quantitative and qualitative text analysis using topic modeling and sentiment analysis, and (2) an inductive thematic analysis of interviews. The findings highlight the different roles played by the two social media platforms. Facebook served as an effective platform to mobilize and organize local communities for immediate and practical support, while Twitter served as a platform for broader global engagement and advocacy. The convergence of results from diverse data sources provides comprehensive insights into the effectiveness and challenges of leveraging social media for community resilience in the aftermath of disaster events.</p

La pénurie de personnel soignant:le malentendu

    No full text

    No full text
