Digitalization as a catalyst for resilience in the hospitality sector.
Hospitality organizations are particularly vulnerable to changes in demand caused by disruptive events such as natural catastrophes, geopolitical events, and pandemic diseases. Nevertheless, the development of organizational resilience by hospitality organizations has remained under-explored. The ongoing digitalization trend provides a unique opportunity for hospitality organizations to combine the adoption of digitalization tools with the development of data analytic capability as a way to anticipate disruptive events and mitigate their impact on operations and performance. Through a cross-sectional survey design and using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling, the present study demonstrates that hospitality organizations can improve their organizational resilience by developing data analytic capability. This can be achieved by (1) investing in the digital tools and IT infrastructure that allows them to sense their environment and (2) adapting their organizational infrastructure to quickly be able to use this information in decision-making. A limitation of the study lies in the use of cross-sectional data which limits temporal causality inferences.<br/
Transformation on vacation: interpersonal novelty and extraversion.
Tourism experiences have been recognised for their power to change peoples’ lives. Termed transformational tourist experiences, these life-changing experiences have been conceptualised in terms of changes to individuals’ well-being, values, and goals. Yet, little is known about the potential of tourism experiences to induce changes in personality. Drawing on a nine-year longitudinal panel study in the Netherlands with 3292 responses from 1803 participants, we examined within-individual, between-occasion associations between vacation frequency, duration, and extraversion. More frequent and longer vacations were associated with increases in extraversion, and that this effect was partially mediated by the experience of meeting new people during vacations. These findings offer preliminary longitudinal evidence that vacation experiences can drive personality change, and position interpersonal novelty as a mechanism of transformation, extending theoretical understandings of personality malleability and the transformative potential of tourism.</p
Where is Emotion? Comparing Emotion Mapping Technologies
Understanding how experiences unfold requires measuring participants' emotions, especially as they move from location to location. Measuring and mapping emotions over space is technically challenging, however. While a number of technologies to record and spatially resolve emotion data exist, they have not been systematically compared. We present emotion data collected at a natural and military heritage site in the Netherlands using three different methods, namely retrospective self report, experience reconstruction, and physiology. These data are applied to three corresponding mapping methods. The resulting maps lead to divergent findings, demonstrating that spatial mapping of emotion data accentuates differences between distinct dimensions of emotions
From news to stories via an AI-supported retelling process.
This paper explores how AI-driven storytelling can transform news articles into fictional narratives using structured retelling techniques. We introduce NewsReteller, a system that explores the generative capabilities of Large Language Models to create stories from news content through three distinct approaches: genre-based storytelling, which adapts narratives to established literary styles; structured storytelling, which reshapes events using predefined biased schemes (story skeletons); and data-driven storytelling, which emphasizes factual clarity and analytical framing. To assess the system’s ability to reinterpret factual content, we generated multiple stories from a single news article using each of these approaches. The results illustrate how different retelling strategies influence narrative framing, thematic emphasis, and information presentation, highlighting the potential of our method to generate creative reinterpretations of real-world events
How real is virtual? Comparing the experience of a theme park attraction with its virtual counterpart.
Virtual reality (VR) is transforming leisure as a digital alternative to traditional (physical) experiences. Yet, few studies have directly compared VR leisure experiences to physical leisure experiences. This experimental study addresses this gap by comparing emotional responses elicited during a physical theme-park dark ride and its VR counterpart in a real-life leisure setting. A total of 145 participants experienced the ride in one of three conditions: the physical ride, its VR counterpart with social interaction, or the VR ride in isolation. Emotional responses were measured through real-time skin conductance and post-ride self-reports. Results indicate that the physical ride elicited stronger emotional responses, higher evaluations, and greater intentions to recommend and revisit. Additionally, the VR ride with social interaction was more arousing than the isolated VR ride and more closely resembled the physical experience. These findings highlight the importance of social interactions in enhancing the emotional impact of VR leisure experiences.</p
