    No full text
This review focuses on the use of microalgae for the bioremediation of water contaminated by pharmaceuticals, with particular emphasis on analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and ketoprofen). Based on 30 publications, it reports on the effectiveness of different microalgae species in removing these contaminants and details some of the mechanisms involved in their removal: biosorption, bioaccumulation, biodegradation, and photodegradation. The microalgae-based treatment systems employed for contaminated water included bioreactors and high-rate algae ponds at various stages of development. Although some microalgae-based treatment systems achieve up to 100% removal of certain drugs, further research is needed to understand the role of each bioremediation mechanism within each microalgae species; similarly, progress is required in scaling up these systems for large-scale applicationIncluye bibliografíaPregradoTecnólogo(a) en Regencia de Farmaci

    No full text
Bacterial microbiota was determined in fruit, soil, and irrigation water from blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) farms located in Cundinamarca, Colombia; Mississippi, United States; and Jalisco, Mexico. Bacterial communities were studied using 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene amplification by targeting the V3–V4 hypervariable region. The most abundant phylum in fruit was Proteobacteria in Colombia and the United States and Firmicutes in Mexico. The most abundant phylum in soil and water was Proteobacteria for all regions. The top three genera found in fruit were Heliorestis (9.2 %), Rhodanobacter (3.3 %), and Sphingomonas (2.8 %) for Colombia, Heliorestis (23.1 %), Thiomonas (8.5 %), and Methylobacterium (3.3 %) for the United States, and Heliorestis (47.4 %), Thiomonas (9.1 %), and Bacillus (4.6 %) for Mexico. Colombia reported the highest (Padj 0.05) results. Beta diversity revealed bacterial communities in fruit differed (P < 0.05) by region. Bacterial differences existed between Colombia, United States, and Mexico for soil and fruit (P = 0.021, 0.003, and 0.006, respectively) and water and fruit (P = 0.003, 0.003, and 0.033, respectively). Blueberries grown in the three different regions have unique microbiota. Fruit and fruit-environment microbial composition also differed by region. These results provide a more complete profile of the bacterial communities on blueberries and their agricultural environments and could contribute to better management and decision-making practices in terms of plant health, food quality, and food safety.Incluye referencias bibliográfica

    No full text
Estos resultados demuestran que la fitorremediación con Pontederia crassipes podría ser una alternativa eficiente para el tratamiento de aguas residuales de la industria termoquímicaThe thermochemical industry is one of the anthropogenic activities that generate the most cyanide wastewater, constituting a risk to the health of populations and surrounding ecosystems due to the high toxicity and harmful effects of this waste. Therefore, these industries use physical and chemical processes to treat their wastewater before disposing of it back into the environment; however, such processes are often considered invasive to ecosystems. In this context, phytoremediation is an ecological alternative for the treatment of such effluents. Therefore, this research seeks to evaluate the efficiency of cyanide removal by Pontederia crassipesto treat wastewater from the thermochemical industry through experimental tests with different conditions. The results showed cyanide removal efficiencies of up to 70% after five days and using closed systems. Also, a total cyanide removal of up to 13mg/L was obtained. These results show that phytoremediation with Pontederia crassipes could be an efficient alternative for wastewater treatment in the thermochemical industry.Incluye referencias bibliográfica

    No full text
Family farming is considered a potential productive model since the associative organization contributes to production volumes and food supply. However, these organizations face challenges related to a better insertion in the market circuits, for which they seek strategies to differentiate themselves. This study aims to identify the factors that determine the added value of agricultural products marketed by family farming organizations in the Department of Nariño, Colombia. Through the case study method, a sample of 150 family farm organizations was selected, and the information was analyzed using a Probit model. 64 % of the organizations carry out value-added activities; the significant variables (P< 0.05) were the income level and, with a negative sign, the loss of product, the average production, and the kilograms sold. In addition, higher-income organizations are more likely to add value to products; in contrast, lower production and product losses cause this probability to decrease. Implementing policies that favor adding value to agri-food products is required to achieve better commercialization of the products, less food loss, and higher income.Incluye referencias bibliográfica

Contemporary and historical human migration patterns shape hepatitis B virus diversity

    No full text
Infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) is responsible for approximately 296 million chronic cases of hepatitis B, and roughly 880,000 deaths annually. The global burden of HBV is distributed unevenly, largely owing to the heterogeneous geographic distribution of its subtypes, each of which demonstrates different severity and responsiveness to antiviral therapy. It is therefore crucial to the global public health response to HBV that the spatiotemporal spread of each genotype is well characterized. In this study, we describe a collection of 133 newly sequenced HBV strains from recent African immigrants upon their arrival in Belgium. We incorporate these sequences—all of which we determine to come from genotypes A, D, and E—into a large-scale phylogeographic study with genomes sampled across the globe. We focus on investigating the spatio-temporal processes shaping the evolutionary history of the three genotypes we observe. We incorporate several recently published ancient HBV genomes for genotypes A and D to aid our analysis. We show that different spatio-temporal processes underlie the A, D, and E genotypes with the former two having originated in southeastern Asia, after which they spread across the world. The HBV E genotype is estimated to have originated in Africa, after which it spread to Europe and the Americas. Our results highlight the use of phylogeographic reconstruction as a tool to understand the recent spatiotemporal dynamics of HBV, and highlight the importance of supporting vulnerable populations in accordance with the needs presented by specifc HBV genotypes.Incluye referenciaas biliográfica

Determination of seroprevalence and risk factors of bovine viral diarrhea in cows of the province of Pamplona

    No full text
Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is an endemic disease distributed worldwide distribution, it is responsible for reproductive disorders with high economic and sanitary impact. Serological diagnostics allow for estimating the spread of the virus in an unvaccinated population. A cross-sectional study was developed to determine the prevalence of BVD in the dairy area of the high mountains of Pamplona, which included identifying related risk factors. Three hundred twenty-four blood samples were collected from non-vaccinated cattle from 82 farms, according to Law 1774 and the ethics committee of the University of Pamplona. Forty-nine samples from 18 farms were positive with an individual prevalence of 15.12% and for farms of 21.95%. The questionnaire indicated that most of the farms had less than 20 animals, had no records and natural mating was the main reproductive system. The contact of cows with bulls from other farms constituted a risk factor. The prevalence for the region was lower than found in other studies in the country. Some management conditions should be improved to avoid risk factors and prevent the spread of the disease. It is important to determine the presence of persistently infected animals, for their subsequent replacement, as well as to implement systematic records on farms and to test new animals arriving on farms.Incluye referencias bibliográfica
