Traces of Military Conflicts in Eastern and Southern Lithuania in the 10th - Early 13th Centuries.
No full textThe paper analyses archaeological research-based traces of military clashes that took place in the period from the 10th century to the early 13th century in the eastern and southern parts of the present-day territory of Lithuania. At that time, it was an arena of Lithuanian-Yotvingian fights with the East Slavs and the Poles as well as the Livonian Order since the beginning of the 13th century. The first records of the East Slavsí marches to the Yotvingians' lands date back as far as 983 AD. The traces of the fights discovered at some mounds in the southern part of Lithuania (Kaukai, Rudamina, and Kumelionys) are related to the mentioned fights. Particular traces of the fights have been explored at Kaukai mound ñ such finds as barbs, traces of fire and human bones
Civic self-determination: the approach to defence funding /
No full textResearches on levels of happiness enable to comprehensively analyse information about the society, political culture and public spirit. One of the fields of such researches can be the research on the relation between the level of happiness of the society and governance of the state. Responding to this field, the public opinion research centre “Vilmorus” conducted a representative survey of Lithuanian population, aiming to find out respondents’ opinions about the level of happiness last year and during next five years’ period as well as their attitude to that part of public expenditure which, seeking the increase of residents’ level of happiness, should be allocated for defence of the state. In total, 1005 respondents were surveyed (people over 18 years old from 19 towns and 31 villages). The research also revealed that the level of happiness determined respondents’ opinions about distribution of state budget and funding of defence of the state. It was found that in the opinion of respondents with lower level of happiness there was no need to allocate funds for defence of the state at all

Lithuanian manufacturing trends in the context of developed and developing countries /
No full textThe purpose of this paper is to assess the main aspects of the Lithuanian manufacturing industries in the global context. Two approaches are prevailing in the scientific studies analyzing structural changes of economy. The first seeks to identify statistically certain change in economic structure using three-sector hypothesis. The second approach focuses on in-depth structural analysis of the particular sector over time. This study supports the second approach and examines the structural changes in the manufacturing industry of developed and developing countries and draw the Lithuanian picture on the basis of 2000-2009. To this end, two economics tools, namely, the structural changes indicators and Finger-Kreinin dissimilarity index are applied for this purpose. The main findings related to the manufacturing sector’s structural tendencies of the Lithuanian economy in the context of developed and developing countries. First of all, the manufacturing industry is looked from the point of view of three economies, such as developed, developing countries and Lithuania’s. The author highlights the main trends of manufacturing industry in global context. After further in-depth analysis of the Lithuanian manufacturing structural changes in the context of developed and developing countries has been carried out and new evidence on manufacturing distribution profiles has been provided, concluding remarks have been made. The insights from this study could be useful guide to the Lithuanian manufacturing industry for the need to promote sustainable development in the global context
The books of problems in arithmetic by Mikas Petrauskas.
No full textTeacher Mikas Petrauskas (1908?) was the last author having published his books of problems in arithmetic for I-III forms of primary school in Independent Lithuania before the World War Two. As books of problems by other authors of the said period, the books of problems by M. Petrauskas distinguished themselves for expressed integration of arithmetic teaching with the real life of the pupils. The books of problems were used in Lithuania during the World War Two and at schools for children of war refugees in the post-war period at West Germany. M. Petrauskas was the only author that dared to publish reviewed books of problems in post-war Soviet Lithuania. However, the said review was not natural and integration with the real life was engaged considerably in the political aspect. The attempts were ineffective: within 5 years, books of problems by M. Petrauskas were displaced from Lithuanian schools by the ones approved in Moscow and translated from Russian.
