Sulphur sources and sinks in \u3cem\u3eBrassica juncea\u3c/em\u3e L.
Brassica crops require high amounts of sulphur (S) for optimum yield, and are characterised by the synthesis of S-rich glucosinolates (GSL). This thesis examined the role of S nutrition in the accumulation and distribution of GSLs and S-containing proteins, and resolved the loci contributing to the regulation of S-metabolite accumulation in seeds of the oil crop Brassica juncea (Indian mustard). This research made use of unique experimental materials in the form of genetically uniform mustard lines selected for high and low seed GSL content. Further examination of complex Genotype x Environment x Management interactions will facilitate the development of elite S-efficient B. juncea germplasm
Beyond the third moment? Mapping the state of qualitative tourism research
This paper poses a central question: what is the present moment in qualitative tourism research? To answer this, the authors review the state of contemporary qualitative tourism research over the past decade (2007–2017), against current progress in the social sciences. Specifically, a systematic bibliometric analysis of tourism journals was undertaken to determine how tourism scholarship maps against Denzin and Lincoln’s social science ‘moments’. These moments prove useful in heuristically framing the development of qualitative social research and thinking; from early moments characterized by positivist ways of knowing, through to later moments where scholars struggle through and beyond the crisis of representation. Using an adapted moments-based framework, our analysis of 1541 qualitative papers across 51 tourism journals indicates that the majority of papers are emblematic of ‘early moment’ thinking. Despite clear evidence of a crisis of representation in some areas, and an increase in the number of qualitative papers published, there is a lack of ‘later moment’ thinking, methodology and/or approach. The political, social and philosophical constraints and opportunities presented by these findings are discussed

Performance enhancement of a multiresonant piezoelectric energy harvester for low frequency vibrations
Harvesting electricity from low frequency vibration sources such as human motions using piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH) is attracting the attention of many researchers in recent years. The energy harvested can potentially power portable electronic devices as well as some medical devices without the need of an external power source. For this purpose, the piezoelectric patch is often mechanically attached to a cantilever beam, such that the resonance frequency is predominantly governed by the cantilever beam. To increase the power generated from vibration sources with varying frequency, a multiresonant PEH (MRPEH) is often used. In this study, an attempt is made to enhance the performance of MRPEH with the use of a cantilever beam of optimised shape, i.e., a cantilever beam with two triangular branches. The performance is further enhanced through optimising the design of the proposed MRPEH to suit the frequency range of the targeted vibration source. A series of parametric studies were first carried out using finite-element analysis to provide in-depth understanding of the effect of each design parameters on the power output at a low frequency vibration. Selected outcomes were then experimentally verified. An optimised design was finally proposed. The results demonstrate that, with the use of a properly designed MRPEH, broadband energy harvesting is achievable and the efficiency of the PEH system can be significantly increased
The student experience of a \u27kidney CAMP\u27 as a primary care clinical placement for undergraduate nursing students
BACKGROUND: Historically clinical placements have been within acute care settings. In a more contemporary society, the future focus of health care is primary care, with an emphasis in expanding primary care clinical placements, to meet the needs of increasing workforce requirements. An innovative collaborative educational model was designed to provide a high quality learning experience and to increase numbers of students experiencing a primary care clinical placement.OBJECTIVE: To explore student nurses\u27 lived experiences within an innovative primary care setting.METHODS: A qualitative case study was undertaken to analyse nursing students\u27 experiences at the Kidney Kids Camp primary care clinical placement.FINDINGS: Participants described how the primary care placement changed their view of nursing and the nurses\u27 role. Five themes emerged from the research: developing knowing through children\u27s eyes; entering the world of primary care; facing a journey of self-discovery; it\u27s all in the way you communicate and; it makes you think differently about nursing.DISCUSSION: The experience of this primary care placement enabled nursing students to enter the world of children living with chronic illness. Immersing students into this unique environment enabled them to gain a greater insight into primary care through the eyes of the children.CONCLUSION: Kidney Kids camp experiences presented nursing students with an enhanced appreciation of primary care nursing, working with children, and an understanding of the impact of chronic health illnesses, through the primary care lens
“Welcome to Country” and “Acknowledgment of Country”: (Re)conciliatory protest
In the past two decades, “Welcome to Country” and “Acknowledgment of Country” practices have become commonplace at the commencement of most public events throughout Australia, and it is highly unusual to participate in a public event where some words of acknowledgment of the traditional owners and custodians of the locale are omitted. This article traces the origins of such practices while identifying the semantic, political, and conceptual differences between them. It articulates how precolonial protocols of encounter among distinct groups and individuals inform “Welcome to Country” practices, attesting to the ontological and epistemological continuity of the latter in relation to the former. It explores recent trends in the public understanding and positioning of both “Welcome to Country” and “Acknowledgment of Country” speeches and events, contextualizing their emerging positioning within the fabric of Australian settler colonial relations, particularly in the context of contemporary discourses on Aboriginal sovereignty and the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
Daniel David Palmer, the father of chiropractic: his heritage revisited. A story of enlightenment, spiritualism and innovation
This paper employed a historical narrative methodology to answer the question: what are the family and personal influences that potentially shaped Daniel David Palmer up until 1886? Data were drawn from more than fifty data sources including Palmer’s writings, historical and genealogical researchers’ reports, newspapers, trade journal advertisements and commentary, and census reports. To establish the authenticity and trustworthiness of the documents, all data were subject to external and internal criticism. After a thematic analysis, five themes emerged from the data. First, Palmer had an adventurous spirit and refined his beliefs, gathering and publishing various knowledge (particularly to do with healing) that he acquired. Second, understanding Palmer’s family exposure to a variety of religious beliefs explained the origin of the spiritual knowledge that Palmer felt was needed to expand his understanding of tone. Third, healthcare practices of the time were varied and randomly available to Palmer to observe human illness and treatments. Fourth, Palmer published his contributions to each of his occupations with examples of the challenges he faced and how he developed skills in critical observation. Fifth, Palmer critically investigated Spiritualism with rigour of proof and an understanding of how and why he valued his beliefs, giving him an additional resource to acquire knowledge about healing and tone. Palmer’s heritage provides us with insight into the religious and healthcare influences that shaped his power of critical observation and his quest to contribute knowledge. These various influences carried through to the origins of chiropractic
Flow states in exercise: a systematic review
Objectives The purpose of this study was to systematically identify, review, synthesise, and appraise current literature on flow in exercise. By doing so, this study aimed to highlight gaps and future research directions that will help to advance understanding and application of flow states in this setting. Design A systematic review using PRISMA guidelines. Methods Eight electronic databases were searched in February 2019. Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed studies focused on the investigation of flow in exercise. Exclusion criteria were studies that did not exclusively include exercise participants, or that focused on instrument development and/or validation. Data from included studies were extracted and reported in a narrative synthesis. Results A total of 26 studies that were conducted with 4478 participants met the inclusion criteria. Several issues with the conceptualisation and measurement of flow in exercise were identified, which makes it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions about this literature. Nevertheless, there is tentative evidence that exergame design features, music, and virtual stimuli can affect at least some dimensions of flow. While little attention has been directed towards developing an explanatory theory, initial findings concerning the contexts and process underlying flow occurrence could offer a potential avenue for progress. Conclusions The review advances knowledge by synthesising quantitative and qualitative evidence on flow states in exercise. By doing so, the review also highlights a range of conceptual and methodological issues in the field. Recommendations to address these issues and suggestions for making meaningful progress to develop understanding of flow states in exercise are advanced
