Applying foresight research for drug policy: Lessons from the DRUG-PREP project
Foresight research is increasingly recognised as important in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of drug policy. This innovative approach enables thinking, debating and shaping future trajectories. Foresight research includes a variety of methodologies, combining evidence-based analysis with creative and interactive approaches. In DRUG-PREP, national-level foresight was conducted in six European countries (Belgium, Czechia, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal) aiming to explore the added value of conducting foresight at the national level and to build response capacity in the involved countries. Horizon scanning is an approach for collecting signals about current or imminent changes (events or trends) that are potential indications of new emerging issues. </p
Risk Factor Analysis for Occurrence of Linezolid-Resistant Bacteria in the Digestive and Respiratory Tract of Food-Producing Animals in Belgium: A Pilot Study.
Linezolid is a critically important antimicrobial used in human medicine. While linezolid is not licensed for food-producing animals, the veterinary use of other antimicrobials, such as phenicols (e.g., florfenicol), could cross/co-select for linezolid-resistant (LR) bacteria. Such LR strains pose a great concern for public health due to their potential transfer between animals and humans. This study explored possible associations between epidemiological risk factors, including phenicol use, and the occurrence of LR bacteria, such as enterococci and staphylococci, in poultry, pigs, and veal calves in Belgium. Florfenicol use significantly increased the likelihood of harboring LR bacteria in veal calves, sows, and fattening pigs, particularly for the digestive tract (odds ratio (OR): [3.19-5.29]) and the respiratory tract (OR: [6.11-9.09]). LR strains from feces from fattening pigs were significantly associated with production type (OR: [3.31-44.14]) and the presence of other animal species (OR: 0.41). The occurrence of LR strains in the respiratory tract from sows was also significantly associated with using antimicrobials other than florfenicol (OR: 10.07) and purchasing animals (OR: 7.28). Our study highlights the potential risks of using certain veterinary antimicrobials, such as florfenicol, in food-producing animals and emphasizes the need for responsible antimicrobial use to safeguard both animal and public health.</p
Guideline VBRN: Best Practice Guide for Electronic Platforms
Official Medicines Control Laboratories (OMCLs) for Immunological Veterinary Medicinal Products (IVMPs) play a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of veterinary vaccines in Europe. Their responsibility includes the control and official batch release of these products before they are allowed to enter the European market, in line with EU Regulation EU 2019/6. In pursuit of efficiency, transparency, and traceability, there has been a growing interest among OMCLs in developing electronic platforms to automate the submission and certification processes (OBPR/OCABR) for veterinary vaccine lots. This “Best Practice Guide for Electronic Platforms” is designed to share insights and recommendations for implementing electronic platforms in OMCLs across Europe. Drawing upon the collective experience and expertise of OMCLs, the guide offers practical guidance on planning, designing, developing, and implementing electronic platforms for the streamlined processing of veterinary vaccine lots. It also provides valuable insights into the use of these platforms, certificate generation, and tracking Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).</p

Trends in new HIV diagnoses and factors contributing to late diagnosis among migrant populations in EU/EEA countries, 2014 to 2023.
We analysed trends in new HIV diagnoses and factors contributing to late diagnosis among migrants in countries in the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) from 2014 to 2023. Of the total reported HIV diagnoses, 45.9% were in migrants, with 13.3% born in EU/EEA countries and 86.7% in non-EU/EEA countries. Late diagnosis was observed in 52.4% of migrants, particularly among non-EU/EEA migrants with heterosexual transmission, regardless of sex. Improved HIV prevention and testing strategies are essential for at-risk migrant populations.</p
