Fast switching of various ions from 11 to 23 MeV/u for space applications at GANIL
No full textInternational audienceIn recent years, the demand for radiation hardness testing of electronic components for space applications has grown significantly across Europe. In response, the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) is developing a dedicated test beamline downstream of the Cyclotron for Ions of Medium Energy (CIME), optimized for delivering fast-switchable heavy-ion cocktail beams suitable for irradiation in both air and vacuum environments. These beams include ions ranging from carbon to xenon, covering energies from 11 to 23 MeV/u. They span Linear Energy Transfers (LET) at the surface up to 50 MeV mg−1 cm2, with ranges in silicon up to 530 μm. The intensities of the various beams produced from the Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source can be adjusted from 102 to 105 particles⋅s−1⋅cm−2, ensuring uniform irradiation over a 6 cm2 area. Thanks to mass-to-charge (m/q) selection of the cyclotron and fast magnetic tuning, about ten ion species can be delivered successively in a single session, with switching times under 10 min. These capabilities enhance European heavy-ion Single Event Effect (SEE) testing capacity and complement other cyclotron-based infrastructures

Cosmic-ray induced sputtering of interstellar formaldehyde ices
No full textInternational audienceH2CO is a ubiquitous molecule in the ISM and in the gas phase of prestellar cores, and is likely present in ice mantles, but its main desorption mechanism is unknown. In this paper our aim is to quantify the desorption efficiency of H2CO upon cosmic-ray impact in order to determine whether cosmic-ray induced sputtering could account for the H2CO abundance observed in prestellar cores. Using a heavy-ion beam as a cosmic-ray analogue at the GANIL accelerator, we irradiated pure H2CO ice films at 10 K under high vacuum conditions and monitored the ice film evolution with infrared spectroscopy and the composition of the sputtered species in the gas phase using mass spectrometry. We derived both the effective and intact sputtering yield of pure H2CO ices. We find that H2CO easily polymerises under heavy-ion irradiation in the ice, and is also radiolysed into CO and CO2. In the gas phase, the dominant sputtered species is CO and intact H2CO is only a minor species. We determine an intact sputtering yield for pure H2CO ices molecules ion for an electronic stopping power of eV ( molecules cm). The corresponding cosmic-ray sputtering rate is molecules cm s, where is the rate of cosmic-ray ionisation of molecular hydrogen in the ISM. In the frame of a simple steady-state chemical model of freeze-out and non-thermal desorption, we find that this experimental cosmic-ray sputtering rate is too low (by an order of magnitude) to account for the observed H2CO gas-phase abundance we derived in the prestellar core L1689B. We find however that this abundance can be reproduced if we assume that H2CO diluted in CO or CO2 ices co-desorbs at the same sputtering rate as pure CO or pure CO2 ices

Search for quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillations with six detection units of KM3NeT/ORCA
No full textInternational audienceNeutrinos described as an open quantum system may interact with the environment which introduces stochastic perturbations to their quantum phase. This mechanism leads to a loss of coherence along the propagation of the neutrino a phenomenon commonly referred to as decoherence and ultimately, to a modification of the oscillation probabilities. Fluctuations in space-time, as envisaged by various theories of quantum gravity, are a potential candidate for a decoherence-inducing environment. Consequently, the search for decoherence provides a rare opportunity to investigate quantum gravitational effects which are usually beyond the reach of current experiments. In this work, quantum decoherence effects are searched for in neutrino data collected by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector from January 2020 to November 2021. The analysis focuses on atmospheric neutrinos within the energy range of a few GeV to . Adopting the open quantum system framework, decoherence is described in a phenomenological manner with the strength of the effect given by the parameters and . Following previous studies, a dependence of the type on the neutrino energy is assumed and the cases are explored. No significant deviation with respect to the standard oscillation hypothesis is observed. Therefore, CL upper limits are estimated as \Gamma_{21} < 4.6\cdot 10^{-21}\,GeV and \Gamma_{31} < 8.4\cdot 10^{-21}\,GeV for , and \Gamma_{21} < 1.9\cdot 10^{-22}\,GeV and \Gamma_{31} < 2.7\cdot 10^{-22}\,GeV for , respectively

No full textInternational audienceAttaché à une histoire vue d’en bas, ce récit interroge les aspirations et les infortunes d’un jardinier de la Manche pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, puis sa détention au stalag XI A entre 1940 et 1945. Porté par son petit-fils, ce travail biographique lève le voile sur les non-dits familiaux et éclaire la vie de cet homme issu des classes communes de la première moitié du XXe siècle. Face à des sources lacunaires, l’auteur reconstitue patiemment cette trajectoire singulière, tout en questionnant les méthodes d’écriture historique et les procédés narratifs pour restituer la personnalité et les émotions de son aïeul. Cette quête donne naissance à un récit hybride, où le lecteur navigue entre le vécu du jardinier et les incertitudes du biographe. Croisant histoire sociale, mémoires familiales et réflexions épistémologiques, cet ouvrage explore une écriture alternative des sciences sociales se donnant pour mission le partage du sensible. Manifestes d’intention, fragments de carnet de captivité, récit de vie : autant de matériaux mis à disposition pour offrir une expérience de lecture immersive et originale
