Effects of sea level rise and tidal flat growth on tidal dynamics and geometry of the Elbe estuary
The role of interaction between river dynamics and the terrestrial ecosystem on the global carbon cycle
A rarely considered issue in the public debate is management of river systems together with riparian and floodplain areas as potential sinks and sources of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and as key components of the global carbon cycle. This is a very specific topic that requires multidisciplinary expertise in the hydro sciences, chemistry, and ecology. It also offers opportunities for hydraulic engineering to rethink river restoration work projects based on the ‘room to the rivers’ concept as climate change mitigation measures in view of the carbon sink potential of riparian areas
Physical and Numerical Modelling: Examples and Best Practices for Drop Structures
Over many decades, successful and even sometimes unsuccessful designs for drop shaft arrangements have been implemented throughout the world. Today, the most common and best tools for successful hydraulic design of drop shafts are numerical and physical models. While proven designs exist and can be studied, and perhaps adapted to new sites, they usually require additional consideration and hydraulic design effort. Most projects require customizations to accommodate unique local conditions such as existing infrastructure, converging flows, varying inlet elevations, size constraints, unfavorable geological conditions, etc. Thus, hydraulic modelling remains an essential part of creating innovative designs that adequately perform under a wide variety of challenging conditions
Energy supply from sea wave, currents, and tides
Environmental conservation and biodiversity preservation are critical considerations when discussing renewable energy sources. Traditional energy sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas have a significant impact on the environment, contributing to global warming, air pollution, and the depletion of natural resources
