Climate change impact on urban water distribution and urban water demand
The increasing impacts of climate change are dramatically reshaping urban water demand, posing significant challenges for cities worldwide. As rising temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns lead to warmer and drier conditions, urban centers face an escalating demand for water to support residents, businesses, and green spaces. This intricate interplay between climate variability and water needs makes it necessary to develop and implement robust adaptation strategies. Research indicates that climate change not only intensifies existing water scarcity but also strains the hydrological cycle and exacerbates the complex socio-economic factors driving water demand. As urban populations continue to expand, particularly in densely populated and developing regions, insights into predictive modeling and integrated water management become crucial. Furthermore, innovative strategies such as digital transitions in water supply systems and diversification of water resources are being explored to enhance resilience, mitigate climate change effects, and promote sustainability. These approaches pave the way for sustainable urban planning and underscore the need for interdisciplinary efforts to ensure a secure water future in the face of climate challenges

Effect of global warming on a deep lake and mitigation measures
Recent progression of global warming has resulted in the warming of surface waters and reduced vertical circulation in deep lakes and oceans. This has led to a decrease in primary production due to the lack of sufficient nutrient transport to the epilimnion and a significant impact on benthic ecosystems due to the shortage of oxygen supply to the hypolimnion. It has been pointed out that this fact not only has a significant impact on fish stocks, but also has the potential to cause the loss of endemic organisms in various parts of the planet. Since the 1990s, wave pumps have been used for energy utilization in the ocean, nutrient transport in fish farms, and removal of hypoxia. More recently they have also been used to control hurricanes. In the current preliminary experiments in Lake Biwa using hoses of 20 m or 40 m in length and 50 mm in diameter, water was transported upwards or downwards at the rate of about 1 m3 every hour, showing the possibility to help enhance vertical circulation

The color of the water can say a lot about the story of a lake. This short account presents the story of the picture on the cover of this issue, which frames the Natural Reserve of “Torbiere”, a manmade shallow wetland made by a set of interconnected ponds, dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century, when the site was exploited for peat extraction. The low transparency and the algal blooms are the tip of the iceberg in a system where the last decades have seen a progressive loss in biodiversity. On the upper part of the picture, the southern tip of deep Lake Iseo is visible, an originally oligotrophic lake, now struggling with deep anoxia. This clashes with the relevance of the surrounding context and demands choices for the future identity of this place and consequent management actions

Urban environments across the world are facing unprecedented challenges in the context of stormwater and wastewater management. These challenges commonly result from increased population growth and consequent urbanisation, as well as from ageing infrastructure and climate-change impacts.To address these challenges, large-scale deep tunnels are increasingly being implemented around the world to cope with the conveyance and storage issues arising with the collection and treatment of stormwater and wastewater. Typically, such deep tunnels have been enabled using “Drop Structures” that function to convey storm or wastewater, safely and efficiently, through substantial elevation differences incurred by deep sewer schemes
Drought monitoring and assessment in China through the National Drought Monitoring and Warning Comprehensive Platform
In the context of climate warming and increasing extreme events, China is facing a severe and complex drought situation. Regional droughts almost occur every year, threatening China's food security, urban and rural drinking water security, and even ecological security. Therefore, it is essential to accurately monitor drought and assess drought effects in China. Through integrating multi-source monitoring data about meteorological, hydrological, and soil moisture, and considering underlying surface conditions such as land use, crops distribution, the National Drought Monitoring and Warning Comprehensive Platform was established in 2023 under the guidance of the Ministry of Water Resources
