A critical appraisal of "Effectiveness of progressive tendon-loading exercise therapy in patients with patellar tendinopathy: a randomised clinical trial"

    No full text
The goal of this paper is to present an appraisal of a research study conducted by Dr. Stephan Breda and other authors at a university medical center in the Netherlands. It was published in 2020 by the British Journal of Sports Medicine. This study compared progressive tendon-loading exercises (PTLE) to eccentric exercise therapy (EET) in the treatment of athletes with patellar tendinopathy. In this paper, each section of the research study is both summarized and critiqued. This includes the introduction, methods, results, and discussion. The clinical applications and relevance of the research are also discussed. Finally, this paper concludes with a summary of PTLE and EET as well as the future usage of these methods of treatment

The effect of citrus fiber as a natural alternative to sodium tripolyphosphate on chunked and formed hams

    No full text
Citrus fiber is a by-product of the juice industry. This study was conducted to determine the effect of citrus fiber (CF) as a natural alternative to conventional phosphates in restructured hams. Analysis of cook loss, pH, instrumental color, and sensory attributes were conducted on chunked and formed hams (n= 84). Treatments included no phosphates (CON), CF at 0.25% (CF25), CF at 0.50% (CF50), and sodium tripolyphosphate at 0.50% (STPP). Brine formulations were developed to meet USDA regulations on pickled meat brine nitrite limits of 200 ppm. Brines consisted of uniform fundamental ingredients: water, salt, sucrose (table sugar), dextrose (powdered sugar), and cure salt. Application for sodium tripolyphosphate and citrus fiber were added to the corresponding treatments (STPP, CF25, CF50). Samples were evaluated over the course of 28 days. Instrumental color and sensory panels were conducted on d 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28. Cook loss and pH analysis measurements were collected during the ham production. The two CF treatments were incompatible to the STPP hams in pH and cook loss attributes (P < 0.05). Significant differences were detected within a* and b* measurements across all treatments of the 28-day evaluation (P < 0.05). Some positive sensory attributes were detected when panelist evaluated the CF treatments for off flavor. Results indicate continued research should be conducted with increased CF levels in this form of meat product.

Examining the disparities and structural barriers in the utilization of mental health services by African Americans: a scoping review

    No full text
The total number of Americans that have experienced having a mental illness continues to increase steadily year after year. It is estimated that nearly 55 million Americans, or 20% of the United States population, has a mental illness. Mental health statistics in the U.S. have risen across all racial and ethnic groups. Scholars have had difficulty being able to quantify the prevalence of mental illness among African American adults. Minimal engagement of African Americans in mental health services, and irregularities in diagnostic practice are two examples of the disparities observed in the mental health encounters of African Americans. African Americans are purported to receive less mental health treatment and to drop out of treatment more frequently. Historically, African Americans have received inadequate mental health treatment which did not address or help with managing their symptoms. During slavery, many African Americans were diagnosed with a mental illness due to the sociopolitical climate of the country. In the aftermath of slavery, many African Americans have experienced several barriers to treatment. The barriers and disparities in the mental health treatment of African Americans has led many African Americans to have unsatisfactory treatment outcomes, and substandard quality of life. Examining service barriers and disparities helps mental health practitioners to adequately identify what is essential in the delivery of mental health treatment to African Americans
