What is the cost of screen use?: sleep quality mediates the relationship between screen use and attention deficits
No full textExcessive smartphone use has been linked to negative cognitive outcomes, including attention deficits, among young adults. Disrupted sleep may play a key role in mediating these cognitive effects. This correlational study used a self-report methodology to investigate whether sleep difficulties mediate the relationship between screen time and attention deficits in college students. Participants were 113 university students who reported the number of hours per week they spend on their smartphones, their attitudes toward screen use, ratings of sleep importance, and symptoms of attention deficits. Smartphone use positively predicted attention deficits and sleep difficulty. Sleep quality can be an important factor for mitigating screen-related attention issues among this population. To enhance sleep quality, it may be beneficial to limit both the amount of time spent on smartphones and one's subjective dependency on these devices. Future research should test for a causal effect linking screen time to attention deficits
