A retrospective analysis of iv ketamine outcome on hospitalizations in an unselected psychiatric sample
No full textObjective: This study aims to explore the outcome with iv ketamine treatment in a real-world clinical setting, primarily measured as posttreatment days hospitalized.Methods: The psychiatric medical records of 46 patients having received iv ketamine on a psychiatric treatment indication between 2015-2018 were retrospectively examined. Analysis comparing the number and duration of hospital admissions before and after ketamine treatment as well as logistic regression analysis to investigate clinical predictors of effectiveness, were performed. To assess patients' severity of depressed symptoms records were screened for MADRS-S scores.Results: No significant difference between pre- and posttreatment hospital days (p=0.170), or number of hospitalizations (p=0.740) were found. The response rate was 31% and remission rate 21%. None of the predictors showed statistical significance in the logistic model.Conclusion: Iv ketamine treatment showed effectiveness in reducing depressive symptoms even with complex patients in a real-world clinical setting. However, this did not translate to a reduction in hospitalization. Highlighting the multifaceted challenges posed when implementing iv ketamine treatment in clinical practice.</p

No full textEstrogen treatment increases bone mass and reduces fat mass but is associated with adverse effects in postmenopausal women. Knowledge regarding tissue-specific estrogen signaling is important to aid the development of new tissue-specific treatments. We hypothesized that the posttranslational modification phosphorylation in estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) may modulate ER alpha activity in a tissue-dependent manner. Phosphorylation of site S122 in ER alpha has been shown in vitro to affect ER alpha activity, but the tissue-specific role in vivo is unknown. We herein developed and phenotyped a novel mouse model with a point mutation at the phosphorylation site 122 in ER alpha (S122A). Female S122A mice had increased fat mass and serum insulin levels but unchanged serum sex steroid levels, uterus weight, bone mass, thymus weight, and lymphocyte maturation compared to WT mice. In conclusion, phosphorylation site S122 in ER alpha has a tissue-dependent role with an impact specifically on fat mass in female mice. This study is the first to demonstrate in vivo that a phosphorylation site in a transactivation domain in a nuclear steroid receptor modulates the receptor activity in a tissue-dependent manner
Development of the International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders-European Chapter (IFSO-EC) Grade-Based Guidelines on the Surgical Treatment of Obesity Using Multimodal Strategies: Design and Methodological Aspects
Get PDFBackground: The prevalence of obesity is already a worldwide health concern. The development of straightforward guidelines regarding the whole available armamentarium (i.e., medical, endoscopic, and surgical interventions in conjunction with a guidance program) is paramount to offering the best multimodal approach to patients with obesity. Methods: The International Federation for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders-European Chapter (IFSO-EC) identified a panel of experts to develop the present guidelines. The panel formulated a series of clinical questions (based on the patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome conceptual framework), which have been voted on and approved. A GRADE methodology will be applied to assess the quality of evidence and formulate recommendations employed to minimize selection and information biases. This approach aims to enhance the reliability and validity of recommendations, promoting greater adherence to the best available evidence. Results: These guidelines are intended for adult patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 who are candidates for metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). The expert panel responsible for developing these guidelines comprised 25 panelists (92% were bariatric surgeons) and 3 evidence reviewers, with an average age of 50.1 ± 10.2 years. The panel focused on 3 key questions regarding the combined use of structured lifestyle interventions, approved obesity management medications, and endoscopic weight loss procedures with MBS. Conclusions: The complexity of obesity as a chronic disease requires a comprehensive knowledge of all the available and feasible therapeutic options. The IFSO-EC society felt the urgent need to develop methodologically valid guidelines to give a full picture and awareness of the possible surgical and non-surgical therapeutic strategies employed with a multimodal approach.</p
Biological control of grey mould in strawberry fruits by soil Rhizosphere bacterial isolates
Get PDFThe goal of this study was to find effective bacterial isolates possessing antagonistic effects against Botrytis cinerea in strawberry in field conditions and to evaluate the antifungal properties of the extracellular metabolites produced by these isolates. Four bacterial isolates with considerable antifungal activity against B. cinerea were isolated from strawberries collected from local markets in Giza, Egypt. The molecular identification of bacterial isolates indicated that two of the isolates belong to the Bacillus subtilis, while the other two isolates belong to Pseudomonas stutzeri. The supernatants of the isolates were extracted and subjected to GC/MS analysis, which revealed that the supernatants of the isolates contained different types of fatty acids with expected antifungal activity. The most potent B. subtilis strain was further applied as a foliar spray over heavily infected strawberry fields, which led to significant reduction of B. cinerea. Therefore, this strain should be investigated further
