Impact of storage of oat bran flour and dispersion on lipid oxidation, odour profile, and oxidative degradation of beta-glucan
Get PDFLipid oxidation induced oxidative degradation of beta-glucan could lead to technological, sensory, and nutritional challenges during food storage. This study aimed to explore the impact of storage of oat bran concentrate (OBC) flours and aqueous oat dispersions on lipid, beta-glucan, and odour properties. Formation of free fatty acids was observed in non-heat treated OBC flour during storage (12 weeks at 4-40 degrees C), indicating the activity of endogenous hydrolytic enzymes, while lipid oxidation was highest in heat-treated (HT) OBC flour. The molecular weight of beta-glucan remained the same, indicating that lipid oxidation did not induce oxidative degradation of beta-glucan in the flours. Fresh and 8 weeks at 40 degrees C stored HT OBC flours were used for the preparation of aqueous oat dispersions with and without 3 % rapeseed oil. No difference in the odour characteristics of dispersions prepared from fresh and stored OBC flours was found. However, 4 weeks at 22 degrees C storage of HT OBC dispersions had a significant effect on the odour in comparison to the freshly prepared dispersions. During the storage of the dispersions, oxidation of lipids was mild and degradation of beta-glucan was not detected. Get PDFThe aim of this article is to study the ways in which freedom is addressed in the French, English and Arabic versions of the transnational channel France 24. The corpus is selected from France 24’s YouTube channels produced in the two months following the murder of Samuel Paty. In this study, discourse analysis is carried out with a focus on the syntactic environment of the word freedom. The results show that freedom is used twice as much in the English and Arabic versions compared to the French version, and that there are differences in the forms of freedom mentioned. The findings also reveal that the phrase freedom of expression in French communicates a more specific and complex idea compared to the English and Arabic languages. </p
Silver diamine fluoride and resin-dentin bonding: Optimization of application protocols
Get PDFObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of SDF-based treatments following delayed bonding and surface treatment approaches on resin-dentin bonding efficiency of a universal adhesive under different application modes.MethodsMid-coronal dentin surfaces from sound third molars were randomly treated with 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and/or additionally with potassium iodide (SDF/KI). Untreated dentin served as control. SDF-treated teeth were assigned to groups according to surface treatment approaches (air-abrasion and water rinsing), the application mode of a mild universal adhesive (etch-and-rinse or self-etch) and delayed bonding (immediate, 7, 15 or 30 days). Microtensile bond strength (n = 5), SEM analyses of hybrid layer formation and dentin etching patterns and dentin permeability were evaluated. Data were analyzed with factorial ANOVA.ResultsSDF-based treatments affected dentin bonding depending on application mode and surface treatment approaches (pppppConclusionAlthough the negative effect of SDF-based treatments on resin-dentin bonding can be avoided by strategies incorporating water-rinsing before hybridization, delayed bonding brings additional advantages due to higher mineral deposition.Clinical significanceWhile the etch-and-rinse technique avoids major bonding drawbacks to SDF-treated dentin, self-etch bonding requires removal of excess silver deposits before hybridization. Performing SDF-based treatments and dentin hybridization in separate sessions (>15 days apart) potentialize mineral deposition improving caries control and service life of composite restorations.</p

Development and clinical validation of a miniaturized finger probe for bedside hemodynamic monitoring
Get PDFOur aim is to develop a blood pressure (BP) measurement technology that could be integrated into a finger-worn pulse oximeter, eliminating the need for a brachial cuff. We present a miniature cuffless tonometric finger probe system that uses the oscillometric method to measure BP. Our approach uses a motorized press that is used to apply pressure to the fingertip to measure BP. We verified the functionality of the device in a clinical trial (n = 43) resulting in systolic and diastolic pressures ((mean ± SD) mmHg) of (-3.5 ± 8.4) mmHg and (-4.0 ± 4.4) mmHg, respectively. Comparison was made with manual auscultation (n = 26) and automated cuff oscillometry (n = 18). In addition to BP, we demonstrated the ability of the device to assess arterial stiffness (n = 18) and detect atrial fibrillation (n = 6). We were able to introduce a sufficiently small device that could be used for convenient ambulatory measurements with minimal discomfort
Risk governance and regulatory adjustments in the public commercial banks of OECD
Get PDFPurposeThis study aims to explore the relationship between risk governance characteristics (chief risk officer [CRO], chief financial officer [CFO] and senior directors [SENIOR]) and regulatory adjustments (RAs) in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development public commercial banks.Design/methodology/approachUsing principal component analysis (PCA) and regression models, the research analyzes a representative data set of these banks.FindingsA significant negative correlation between risk governance characteristics and RAs is found. Sensitivity analysis on the regulatory Tier 1 capital ratio and the total capital ratio indicates mixed outcomes, suggesting a complex relationship that warrants further exploration.Research limitations/implicationsThe study’s limited sample size calls for further research to confirm findings and explore risk governance’s impact on banks’ capital structures.Practical implicationsEnhanced risk governance could reduce RAs, influencing banking policy.Social implicationsThe study advocates for improved banking regulatory practices, potentially increasing sector stability and public trust.Originality/valueThis study contributes to understanding risk governance’s role in regulatory compliance, offering insights for policymaking in banking. </p
Geographical variation in persistence to oral anticoagulation therapy and clinical outcomes among patients with atrial fibrillation initiating therapy in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland
Get PDFAim: To examine inter-national and regional variations in persistence of oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy and incidence of clinical outcomes and mortality, among patients with incident atrial fibrillation (AF) in the Nordic countries.Methods: We conducted a registry-based multinational cohort study of OAC-naïve patients diagnosed with AF that redeemed at least one prescription of OAC after AF in Denmark (N = 25 585), Sweden (N = 59 455), Norway (N = 40 046) and Finland (N = 22 415). Persistence was dispensing at least one prescription of OAC from Day 365 after the first prescription and 90 days forward.Results: Persistence was 73.6% (95% confidence interval 73.0-74.1) in Denmark, 71.1% (70.7-71.4) in Sweden, 89.3% (88.2-90.1) in Norway and 68.6% (68.0-69.3) in Finland. One-year risk of ischemic stroke varied between 2.0% (1.8-2.1) in Norway and 1.5% (1.4-1.6) in Sweden and 1.5% (1.3-1.6) in Finland. One-year risk of major bleeding other than intracranial bleeding varied between 2.1% (1.9-2.2) in Norway and 5.9% (5.6-6.2) in Denmark. One-year mortality risk varied between 9.3% (8.9-9.6) in Denmark and 4.2% (4.0-4.4) in Norway.Conclusion: In OAC-naïve patients with incident AF, persistence of OAC therapy and clinical outcomes vary across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Initiation of real-time efforts are warranted to ensure uniform high-quality care across nations and regions.</p
Focal adhesions contain three specialized actin nanoscale layers
Get PDFFocal adhesions (FAs) connect inner workings of cell to the extracellular matrix to control cell adhesion, migration and mechanosensing. Previous studies demonstrated that FAs contain three vertical layers, which connect extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton. By using super-resolution iPALM microscopy, we identify two additional nanoscale layers within FAs, specified by actin filaments bound to tropomyosin isoforms Tpm1.6 and Tpm3.2. The Tpm1.6-actin filaments, beneath the previously identified α-actinin cross-linked actin filaments, appear critical for adhesion maturation and controlled cell motility, whereas the adjacent Tpm3.2-actin filament layer beneath seems to facilitate adhesion disassembly. Mechanistically, Tpm3.2 stabilizes ACF-7/MACF1 and KANK-family proteins at adhesions, and hence targets microtubule plus-ends to FAs to catalyse their disassembly. Tpm3.2 depletion leads to disorganized microtubule network, abnormally stable FAs, and defects in tail retraction during migration. Thus, FAs are composed of distinct actin filament layers, and each may have specific roles in coupling adhesions to the cytoskeleton, or in controlling adhesion dynamics.</p
The very high X-ray polarization of accreting black hole IGR J17091−3624 in the hard state
Get PDFWe report the first detection of the X-ray polarization of the transient black hole X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624 taken with the Imaging X-ray polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) in 2025 March, and present the results of an X-ray spectropolarimetric analysis. The polarization was measured in the 2-8 keV band with 5.2 sigma statistical confidence. We report a polarization degree (PD) of 9.1 +/- 1.6 per cent and a polarization angle of 83 degrees +/- 5 degrees (errors are 1 sigma confidence). There is a hint of a positive correlation of PD with energy that is not statistically significant. We report that the source is in the corona-dominated hard state, which is confirmed by a hard power-law-dominated spectrum with weak reflection features and the presence of a Type-C quasi-periodic oscillation at similar to 0.2 Hz. The orientation of the emitted radio jet is not known, and so we are unable to compare it with the direction of X-ray polarization, but we predict the two to be parallel if the geometry is similar to that in Cygnus X-1 and Swift J1727.8-1613, the two hard state black hole binaries previously observed by IXPE. In the Comptonization scenario, the high observed PD requires a very favourable geometry of the corona, a high inclination angle (supported by the presence of a dip in the light curve) and possibly a mildly relativistic outflow and/or scattering in an optically thick wind
