Improved crystalline quality and self-field Jc in sequentially vacuum-multilayered YBCO thin films on buffered metallic templates
The effect of simple in situ vacuum treatment between the sequentially multilayered YBCO thin films by pulsed laser deposition is investigated. The vacuum treatment during the growth intervals is observed to have a diminishing effect on the formation of structural defects along the c -axis of the YBCO lattice. This greatly improves the structural properties of the film, ultimately resulting in almost 40% increased self-field critical current density. The underlying mechanisms behind the vacuum treatment are comprehensively discussed with the help of Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, suggesting that the improved crystalline quality of each sublayer results from desorption of weakly bound atomic species from the film surface thus reducing probability of defect formation in the following ablation interval.</p
Alterations in cerebral perfusion and substrate metabolism in type 2 diabetes: interactions with APOE-ε4
Aims/hypothesis: Epidemiological studies indicate that type 2 diabetes increases the risk for Alzheimer's disease. Alterations in cerebral metabolism have been proposed as a potential mechanism underlying this association. A better understanding of these metabolic changes may elucidate potential pathways linking type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer's disease. The aim of the current exploratory study was to investigate whether cerebral metabolism, including glucose and fatty acid uptake as well as cerebral blood flow, is altered in individuals with type 2 diabetes compared with both overweight individuals and lean control individuals.Methods: This exploratory study included 38 participants (ten with type 2 diabetes, 13 overweight individuals and 15 lean control individuals). Brain metabolism was assessed using multiple imaging techniques: [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose and [18F]fluoro-6-thiaheptadecanoic acid positron emission tomography for glucose and fatty acid uptake; arterial spin-labelling MRI for cerebral perfusion; and 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy for specific metabolites. Neurodegeneration markers were evaluated from lumbar puncture samples. Group comparisons were assessed using one-way ANOVA and unpaired t tests, and correlations were assessed with linear regression.Results: Individuals with type 2 diabetes exhibited lower cerebral glucose uptake compared with both lean and overweight groups (p1c levels (p1c levels (pConclusions/interpretation: Type 2 diabetes was associated with decreased cerebral perfusion and glucose uptake but increased fatty acid uptake in white matter. The elevated fatty acid uptake observed both in individuals with type 2 diabetes and in APOE-ε4 carriers suggests a common metabolic dysfunction for these Alzheimer's disease risk factors and suggests that targeting cerebral metabolic dysfunction, particularly fatty acid metabolism, could be a potential strategy for reducing the risk for neurodegeneration in individuals with type 2 diabetes.</p

We present a new sufficient criterion to prove that a non-sofic half-synchronized subshift is direct prime. The criterion is based on conjugacy invariant properties of Fischer graphs of half-synchronized shifts. We use this criterion to show as a new result that all n-Dyck shifts are direct prime, and we also give new proofs of direct primeness of non-sofic beta-shifts and non-sofic S-gap shifts. In life sciences, tracking objects from movies enables researchers to quantify the behavior of single particles, organelles, bacteria, cells, and even whole animals. While numerous tools now allow automated tracking from video, a significant challenge persists in compiling, analyzing, and exploring the large datasets generated by these approaches. Here, we introduce CellTracksColab, a platform tailored to simplify the exploration and analysis of cell tracking data. CellTracksColab facilitates the compiling and analysis of results across multiple fields of view, conditions, and repeats, ensuring a holistic dataset overview. CellTracksColab also harnesses the power of high-dimensional data reduction and clustering, enabling researchers to identify distinct behavioral patterns and trends without bias. Finally, CellTracksColab also includes specialized analysis modules enabling spatial analyses (clustering, proximity to specific regions of interest). We demonstrate CellTracksColab capabilities with 3 use cases, including T cells and cancer cell migration, as well as filopodia dynamics. The risk of second primary cancer after nasopharyngeal cancer: a systematic review
Purpose: Second primary cancers (SPCs) after nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) are rare, but have an impact on the follow-up of this patient population. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature to determine the prevalence and most typical sites of SPCs after NPC. Methods: We searched the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for articles on SPCs after NPC. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed.Results: This review includes data on 89 168 patients with NPC from 21 articles. The mean occurrence for SPCs was 6.6% and varied from 4.9% in endemic areas to 8.7% in non-endemic areas. The most frequent locations of SPCs were oral cavity, pharynx, nose and paranasal sinuses, esophagus and lung.Conclusion: There is an increased risk for a SPC after NPC management, especially in non-endemic areas. However, their mean rate is lower than after other head and neck carcinomas.</p
Circumnuclear Structures in Megamaser Host Galaxies
Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we identify circumnuclear (100-500 pc scale) structures in nine new H2O megamaser host galaxies to understand the flow of matter from kpc-scale galactic structures down to the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at galactic centers. We double the sample analyzed in a similar way by Greene et al. and consider the properties of the combined sample of 18 sources. We find that disk-like structure is virtually ubiquitous when we can resolve <200 pc scales, in support of the notion that non-axisymmetries on these scales are a necessary condition for SMBH fueling. We perform an analysis of the orientation of our identified nuclear regions and compare it with the orientation of megamaser disks and the kpc-scale disks of the hosts. We find marginal evidence that the disk-like nuclear structures show increasing misalignment from the kpc-scale host galaxy disk as the scale of the structure decreases. In turn, we find that the orientation of both the similar to 100 pc scale nuclear structures and their host galaxy large-scale disks is consistent with random with respect to the orientation of their respective megamaser disks
The Nanomechanical Performance and Water Uptake of a Flowable Short Fiber Composite: The Influence of Bulk and Layering Restorative Techniques
This study aimed to evaluate the nanomechanical surface properties and water uptake of a flowable short-fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) using various restorative techniques in order to assess its potential as a standalone restorative material. Nanoindentation and compressive creep testing were employed to characterize material performance. Three resin composites were examined: a flowable SFRC (everX Flow), a bulk-fill particulate filler composite (PFC), and a conventional PFC. Five experimental groups were established based on the restorative technique: layered PFC, layered SFRC, bulk SFRC, bulk PFC, and a bi-structure combining SFRC and PFC. Ninety standardized specimens (n = 18/group) were fabricated. Static and creep nanoindentation tests were conducted to assess surface properties, and water uptake was measured over a 30-day period. Premature ovarian insufficiency and chance of pregnancy after childhood cancer: A population-based study (the Fex-Can study)
Endocrine complications are a common late effect after childhood cancer. Our study assessed the prevalence and predictors of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and prospects of pregnancy in young female survivors. This nationwide study combined registry and survey data for female childhood cancer survivors aged 19 to 40 years, identified through the National Quality Registry for Childhood Cancer in Sweden. Of 1989 approached young women, 1333 (67%) participated by completing a survey. Median age at diagnosis 1981 to 2017 was 6 (range 0-17) and at study 28 (19-40) years. There were two indicators of POI, induced puberty reported in 5.3% and estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in 9.3% at assessment. In separate logistic regression analyses (P < .001), induced puberty and ERT were significantly predicted by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), abdominal irradiation, central nervous system irradiation and chemotherapy. ERT was also associated with older age at diagnosis. Of the 626 women (48% of responders) who had tried to become pregnant, 25% had undergone fertility investigations and 72% reported having a biological child. Treatment with HSCT was associated with 5.4 times the odds of needing fertility investigations (P < .001). Having a biological child was associated with non-HSCT treatment, but also with ever having had a partner and older age at the time of study (all P < .001). In conclusion, the majority of those female childhood cancer survivors who had tried to conceive were able to successfully give birth. However, a small identifiable group of female survivors are at risk of subfertility and early menopause
