    Tutkimuksessa selvitetään luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden käsityksiä oppiaineiden ja aiheiden opetuksesta osana eheyttämistä, erityisesti tiedonalalähtöistä ja ilmiölähtöistä eheyttämistä. Tutkimus pohjautuu eheyttämistä ja monialaisia oppimiskokonaisuuksia käsittelevän opintojakson lopuksi opiskelijoiden kirjoittamiin esseisiin (N=20), joita tarkastellaan fenomenogra!sesti. Opiskelijoiden käsitysten mukaan eheyttämisen tavoitteena on oppiainerajat ylittävän mielekkään kokonaisuuden muodostaminen opiskeltavasta aiheesta. Oppiaineiden ja aiheiden rooli tiedonalalähtöisessä ja ilmiölähtöisessä eheyttämisessä näyttäytyy erilaisena ja toisinaan vaikeasti hahmotettavana. Opiskelijat pystyivät jo yhden opintopisteen laajuisen opintojakson jälkeen muodostamaan monipuolisen ja tutkimuskirjallisuuden kanssa linjassa olevan kuvan oppiaineista ja aiheista eheyttävässä opetuksessa.</p

    On the role of interplanetary shocks in accelerating MeV electrons

    Context. One of the sources of solar energetic particle (SEP) events is shocks that are driven by fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs). They can accelerate SEPs up to relativistic energies and are attributed to the largest SEP events. New studies suggest that CME-driven shocks can potentially accelerate electrons to MeV energies in the vicinity of the Sun.Aims. We focus on relativistic electrons associated with strong interplanetary shocks between 2007 and 2019 to determine whether the shocks can keep accelerating such electrons up to a distance of 1 AU.Methods. We analyze observations by the High Energy Telescope (HET) aboard the STEREO spacecraft of potential electron energetic storm particle (ESP) events characterized by intensity time series that peak at the time of, or close to, the associated CME-driven shock crossing. We present a new filtering method to assess the statistical significance of particle intensity increases and apply it to MeV electron observations in the vicinity of IP shocks. We employ a STEREO in situ shock list, which contains a total of 587 shocks occurring at the two STEREO spacecraft. From this list, we identify 27 candidate events through visual inspection.Results. Our method identifies nine clear cases where a significant increase of MeV electrons was found in association with a shock. Typically, the highest statistical significance was observed in the highest of the three HET energy channels (2.8-4.0 MeV). All nine cases are associated with shocks driven by IP CMEs that showed large transit speeds in excess of 900 km s-1. In several cases, multiple shocks were observed within one day of the shock related to the electron increase.Conclusions. Although electron ESP events at MeV energies are found to be rare at 1 AU, our filtering method is not designed to identify a potential IP shock contribution from distances closer to the Sun. Observations from the Parker Solar Probe or Solar Orbiter taken during closer approaches to the Sun would likely provide clarity on the IP shock acceleration of electrons.</p

    Speech Disfluencies in Bilingual Lebanese Children Who Do and Do Not Stutter

    Purpose: Prior studies have shown that bilingual children who do not stutter (CWNS) exhibit a high number of disfluencies in both languages, increasing the risk of misidentification by speech-language pathologists as children who stutter (CWS). Conversely, there is a risk of misidentifying CWS with a relatively low incidence of disfluencies as CWNS. This study aims to explore the qualitative and quantitative distinctions in speech disfluency profiles between CWNS and CWS. The assessment covers both the dominant and nondominant language to examine the impact of language dominance on disfluency patterns. Method: A total of 92 Lebanese bilinguals (70 CWNS and 22 CWS) from 4;06 to 7;06 (years;months) were included. Language dominance was determined based on parental assessments. Spontaneous and narrative speech samples were collected for each child in both languages and all stuttering-like disfluencies (SLD) and other disfluencies (OD) were coded. Results: On average, CWNS showed a significantly lower percentage of total SLD, weighted SLD, SLD subtypes, and iterations compared to CWS. However, the number of disfluencies of CWNS exceeded monolingual clinical standards. Language dominance did not impact SLD and OD percentages, but some differences for SLD subtypes emerged. Binary logistic regression analyses showed that repetitions and dysrhythmic phonations are good predictors for correct CWS or CWNS classification, in contrast to OD. A combination of predictors from both languages led to better classification than using predictors from either language alone. Conclusions: The current study shows that speech disfluency percentages in bilingual CWNS typically surpass monolingual standards and can be at par with those of CWS. However, through careful consideration of disfluency characteristics, ideally in both languages, an accurate differential diagnosis of stuttering in bilingual children can be achieved.</p

    Artikkeli tutkii suomalaisen median ilmastonmuutosuutisointien diskursseissa ilmenevää kategoriajaottelua ja pyrkii analysoimaan sitä uskontotieteen pyhäteorioiden valossa. Ilmastonmuutoksesta uutisoidessaan media luo ja vahvistaa ilmastonmuutokseen liitettyä jaottelua hyvän ja pahan välillä, jota voidaan tulkita pyhän ja profaanin välisenä rajanvetona. Artikkelin aineiston muodostaa tietyin hakusanoin rajattu kooste Ylen ja Ilta-Sanomien, kahden laajimmin suomalaisia tavoittavan uutismedian, ilmastonmuutosuutisista vuosien 2015—2021 välillä. Ilmastonmuutosuutisoinnin diskursseissa rakentuu suojeltava ja loukkaamaton pyhä, joka paikantuu maapallon luontoon ja jota ilmastonmuutos vaikutuksillaan uhkaa. Artikkeli tarjoaa uuden näkökulman ilmastonmuutoskeskusteluun osoittamalla, miten ilmastonmuutos vahvistaa ja muokkaa pyhän – tässä artikkelissa luonnon ja ilmaston – ja sitä uhkaavan profaanin välistä rajanvetoa. Samalla artikkeli tuo esiin median roolin tämän rajanvedon rakentamisessa. Tarkastelemalla medioiden rakentamia represaantioita ilmastonmuutoksesta ja niihin liitettyjä merkityksenantoja uskontotieteen pyhäteorioiden ja diskurssianalyysin avulla, artikkeli osoittaa ilmastonmuutoksen olevan osa sosiaalisesti jaettua ja kontrolloitua rajanvedon verkostoa, jossa korostuu loukkaamattomana pidetty pyhä. Tämän lähestymistavan ansiosta artikkeli käsittelee ilmastonmuutosta tuoreella tavalla ottaen huomioon ilmastonmuutosuutisoinnin ja ilmastonmuutokseen liittyvien torjuntakeinojen ja poliittisen päätöksenteon taustalla vaikuttavan, pyhän ja profaanin väliselle rajanvedolle rakentuvan, järjestelmän. </p

    The United Nations and Nordic identity - Reflections on Finnish UN policy in the 2000s

    Support for the United Nations (UN) has been a strong priority for the Nordic states. The group has been cooperating to promote their shared values and interests since the 1960s. The Nordics have gained a reputation as do-gooders, norm advocates and strong supporters of the UN. This article studies Finland’s UN policy in the 2000s from the perspective of Nordic identity, specifically how the Finnish approach reflects the common identity within the three pillars of the UN system. On the theoretical level the article is based on the literature covering group politics and collective identity. We focus on the value-based, expressive and instrumental dimensions of Nordic identity, drawing on Finnish foreign policy documentation and interviews with key Finnish UN diplomats and policymakers. According to the findings, Nordic identity is essential for Finnish UN policy, even if there is variation in time and in policy areas.</p

    There Goes the Neighbourhood—A Multi-City Study Reveals Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens Commonly Occupy Urban Green Spaces

    IntroductionHumans acquire tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) from infected ticks contacted during outdoor activities. Outdoor activity is at its highest in urban green spaces, where the presence of tick populations has increasingly been observed. Consequently, more insight into factors influencing the presence of ticks therein is needed. Here, we assess the occurrence of ticks and several TBPs in urban green spaces in Finland, estimate related human hazard and assess how landscape features influence tick and TBP occurrence therein.MethodsTicks collected from five cities during 2019-2020 were utilised. Borrelia, Rickettsia, Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia and TBEV were screened from ticks using qPCR. Various landscape features were calculated and utilised in generalised linear mixed models to assess their contribution towards tick and TBP occurrence in green spaces. Finally, human population density proximate to each study site was calculated and used to create population-weighted risk indices.ResultsBorrelia were the most common pathogens detected, with 22% of nymphs and 43% of adults infected. Increasing forest cover had a positive effect on the densities of nymphs and adults, whereas forest size had a negative effect. Middling percentages of artificial surfaces predicted higher nymph densities than low or high values. Human population-weighted risk estimates were highly varied, even within cities. A positive correlation was observed between total city population and risk indices.ConclusionsTicks and TBPs are commonplace in urban green spaces in Finland. Enzootic cycles for Borrelia and Rickettsia appear to be well maintained within cities, leading to widespread risk of infection therein. Our results suggest that nymph densities are highest in urban forests of medium size, whereas small or large forests show reduced densities. Green spaces of roughly similar risk can be found in cities of different sizes, emphasising that the identification of areas of particularly high hazard is important for effective mitigation actions.</p

    When using deepfake technology to represent users, there is a need to convey a reasonable range of emotions to be able to portray different circumstances ranging from positive to negative experiences (e.g., personal struggles). Because it is not known how well deepfake avatars embody emotional diversity, we investigated this aspect among 202 deepfake avatars. Our findings suggest an overall positivity bias in deepfake avatars’ emotions. We also found significant gender differences in several emotional expressions, with, male deepfakes scoring higher in “smile” and “calm” emotions, and female deepfake avatars scoring higher in “surprised”, “fear”, and “happy” emotions. In terms of ethnicity, European and Hispanic deepfake avatars demonstrate the broadest range of “smile”, “happy”, and “calm” compared to other ethnic groups. Age had no notable bias. No emotion score was normally distributed, suggesting that the range of emotional representativeness among the tested deepfake avatars is skewed. We outline the implications for academics and professionals regarding future development and responsible deployment of deepfake avatars. </p

    Anatextrix monstrabilis sp. nov. (Araneae: Agelenidae) is described and illustrated, based on male and female specimens collected from Adana Province, Türkiye. The new species has an L-shaped male palpal femur bearing multiple apophyses, which is a rare trait in spiders. Anatextrix monstrabilis sp. nov. is the second species of the recently described genus Anatextrix Kaya, Zamani, Yağmur & Marusik, 2023, currently known only from southern Türkiye. </p
