Moleculaire detectie van pathogenen in afvalwater

    No full text

The Influence of Negative Expectancies on Itch-related Avoidance Behavior

    No full text
Objective: Itch expectancies play a key role in itch perception and may elicit avoidance behaviors to prevent itch, even when it is costly. Despite theoretical evidence that expectancies can influence avoidance behaviors, no studies have empirically investigated their association in the context of itch. The aim of this study was to investigate whether negative expectancy manipulation led to more costly itch-related avoidance behavior. Methods: This study was conducted using a within-subjects repeated measures experimental design. Thirty-four participants underwent an instructional learning and conditioning procedure in which a sham experimental solution paired with a “high” quantity of cowhage spicules was used to induce high itch-expectations. A control solution paired with a medium quantity of cowhage spicules was used to induce medium itch-expectations. Subsequently, participants learned that by effortfully gripping a dynamometer above a certain level, they could avoid strong itching. In anticipation of two other itch stimuli after reapplication of the experimental solution and the control solution, average grip strength (reflecting costly itch-avoidance behavior) was measured. Results: Results indicated that negative itch expectations were successfully induced (p < 0.001, d = 1.16). However, while participants engaged in avoidance behavior in both experimental and control trials, negative expectancy learning did not lead to more costly avoidance behavior (p = 0.74, ηp2 = 0.003). Conclusion: Results suggested that acute itch induced avoidance behavior regardless of expectations toward itch. Extending the research on the role of avoidance and its impact on itch may shed light on new approaches for itch management

    25.133 Terwolde - Dorpsstraat 55

The Role of Exports for Income and Job Creation in Sub-Saharan African Countries: New Evidence using the Africa Supply and Use Tables Database

This paper is number 197 in the Groningen Growth and Development's Research Memoranda series. Abstract This paper examines the role of exports for income and job creation in sub-Saharan African countries. It introduces the Africa Supply and Use Tables (ASUT) database, which provides annual data on the production structure of eleven countries from 1990 to 2019. For each country, official supply and use tables are benchmarked to national accounts and trade data that reflect production and usage by 20 sectors. Using input-output techniques, we document five key stylized facts: i) African economies face increased international competition, during a period in which the production process has been further fragmented; ii) An increasing share of domestic value-added exports (income content of exports) comes from manufacturing and services; iii) The income content of exports is becoming increasingly diversified, especially between 1990 and 2007, but continuing albeit at a slower pace from 2007 to 2019; iv) A rising number of manufacturing jobs are sustained by exports, increasing from 4.1 million workers in 1990 to 8.6 million workers by 2019; v) Inter-industry linkages are expanding, where the rising linkages are particularly observed in services sectors. The dataset is hosted separately on Dataverse and can be accessed through: Africa Supply and Use Tables (ASUT) Database DOI: 10.34894/IMKXNT</a

The dataset summarizes work stoppages (strikes and lockouts) in Sweden by location and year (N=4,686). For the periods 1895-1902 and 1903-1927, there are more detailed data (distinguishing between strikes and lockouts, describing the events in terms of participants, start and end dates, outcome etc), which can be downloaded separately

This is a semi-official micro-level dataset on work stoppages, which was mainly compiled retrospectively by Axel Raphael around 1900 (N=1,449). Each observation (row) in this dataset corresponds to an individual work stoppage

Does every body matter? The relationship between engagement with body-positive and appearance-ideal content on instagram and aspects of positive and negative body image

    No full text
Body-positive content is prevalent on social networking sites (SNS). Research shows that engagement with body positive content reduces aspects of negative body image and increases aspects of positive body image. However, the mechanisms accounting for the impact of body-positive content on body image are not well understood. In this study, we used the tripartite influence model (Thompson et al., 1999) and acceptance model of intuitive eating (Avalos & Tylka, 2006) to examine how engagement with appearance-ideal and body-positive content on Instagram relates to aspects of negative and positive body image. Structural equation modelling of cross-sectional data from 454 female participants (Mage = 22.65) revealed that engagement with appearance-ideal content was indirectly associated with (higher) negative and (lower) positive body image through lower internal body orientation and body acceptance by others, and (in case of negative body image) through higher thin-ideal internalisation. Engagement with body-positive content predicted (higher) positive body image but not negative body image; appearance comparison, thin-ideal internalisation, internal body orientation, and body acceptance by others did not mediate this effect. These findings illustrate the value of combining elements of the tripartite influence model and acceptance model of intuitive eating to understand the relationship between SNS and body image
