No full textInternational audienceThe existing concern about the frequency of English words and phrases in the Spanish language spoken in Puerto Rico, a country which has been subject to the English language for political reasons since 1898, has been expressed in many written pages. On one side, passionate expressions have been published about the negative influence of English; on the other, there are researches which do not totally confirm these impressions. In this work, the frequency and types of English words found in a sample of Puerto Rican television news is analyzed. The research forms part of a project entitled Unidad y Diversidad de la Lengua Española (DIES-RTP), designed by Colegio de México and developed in Puerto Rico by the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Puerto Rico.La preocupación existente sobre la proliferación de los anglicismos en el español de Puerto Rico, sometido a la presión del inglés por razones políticas desde 1898, se ha dejado sentir en muchas páginas escritas. Por una parte, se han publicado expresiones apasionadas sobre la influencia negativa del inglés; por otra, se han realizado investigaciones que no parecen confirmarla del todo. En este trabajo se analiza la frecuencia y los tipos de anglicismos encontrados en una muestra de los noticiarios de la televisión puertorriqueña. El estudio está enmarcado en el proyecto Difusión Internacional del Español por Radio, Televisión y Prensa: Unidad y Diversidad de la Lengua Española (DIES-RTP), diseñado por el Colegio de México y desarrollado en Puerto Rico por el Instituto de Lingüística de la Universidad de Puerto Rico

No full textInternational audienceOver the past century, we have witnessed a decisive shift in our perceptions of reality and literature as tradition and knowledge have become questioned in new and increasingly complex ways. In Die Fr 'liche Wissenschaft, 1882,') Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God. God is dead, he said, and we have killed him with our persistent questioning of his existence and the meaning of ours. But, says Nietzsche, the death of God has liberated philosophy. We are no longer restrained by the confinements of theology. Roughly at the same time, or a little later, Freud was discovering the subconscious and presented theories of the psyche which were to have an immense impact upon our perception of human life. Natural science, too, leapt forward with enormous strides. The emergence of new theories and ideas multiplied our perceptions of the world and complicated reality in the extreme. Where, formerly, human existence was closely connected to religion, to rules and dogma, to fairly simple perceptions of the human condition, now, at the turn of the century, the Creator of the universe was presumed dead, the centre, the anchor of our world, guaranteing truth and meaning and fair judgement in human life, irrevocably lost. Moreover, men and women alike were supposed to have subconscious layers unknown to them, governed largely by instincts, indeed, by sexuality, and the pursuit of natural laws revealed unexplored areas of enormous dimension

No full textFor centuries, women of all parts of the world have been subject to discrimination and prejudice. While the struggle in defense of their rights is stronger every day, in many countries the position of women in society is far from expected. Such is the case of Puerto Rican women, exploited as women and as colonized people. This paper highlights some of the elements that affect the participation of women in Puerto Rican society and the awareness that is taking place in some sectors, in spite of the obstacles it faces.Durante siglos las mujeres de todas partes del mundo han estado sometidas al discrimen y al prejuicio. Si bien la lucha en defensa de sus derechos cobra cada día mayor unidad y fuerza, en muchos países la posición de la mujer en la sociedad aún está muy lejos de lo que debiera ser. Tal es el caso de la mujer puertorriqueña, explotada como mujer y como colonizada. En este trabajo se señalan algunos de los elementos que afectan la participación de la mujer en la sociedad puertorriqueña y la concienciación que se está produciendo en algunos sectores, pese a los obstáculos a los que se enfrenta
