Analysis of Research Support Services at international Best Practice Institutions
No full textThe following analysis aims to provide an overview and status of the research support services available to university researchers - with a focus on the services provided by university libraries - as well as to propose a strategy for CULIS with respect to research support of researchers at the University of Copenhagen. The analysis starts by defining the term research support service. This definition is used to categorize the national services and is iterated before moving on to the international institutions. We have described the services at 11 international and 8 national university libraries and identified the services that define the best practice institutions. We have found that research support services are often developing more or less organically, and service contents are moving toward becoming more tool-oriented, i.e. with less focus on the traditional information objects, books, journals, manuscripts. E.g. in scholarly publishing the focus is moving from acquiring, cataloging and local dissemination to facilitating the production and publication of books and journals, to supporting the authors on legal issues and to disseminating globally. Competences related to metadata structuring are potentially of great value to the growing field of data-archiving by researchers. The recommendations to CULIS are to conduct a new quantitative survey of researchers' needs similar to the project “Ph.D. students' information seeking behavior” in order to paint a clearer picture of what the researchers of The University of Copenhagen needs. Assessment could be made of whether the focus on physical student environments should be matched for researchers. It is a general recommendation to formulate a strategy for the area of providing research support services, formulate clear goals for the institution as well as for the individual services, dedicate resources for running services, dedicate resources to developing services, coordinate existing services, provide overview of goals and services (internally and externally), participate in networking and user activities, position university libraries as part of the research infrastructure. When developing new services, it is our recommendation that special focus be put on primary research data and accompanying metadata – dataverses, environments for generating and sharing research content – VREs, dedicated support of individual researchers, research groups and dedicated information for researchers – researcher information hubs
Utilizing hprints.org as a subject based research infrastructure
No full texthprints.org is a recently established Open Access repository in the fields of social sciences and arts and humanities. It is a Nordic initiative and as such an example of a ”green” Open Access facility aiming at making scholarly documents publicly available to the widest possible audience. The archive can be accessed freely on the Internet. hprints.org has been funded twice by Nordbib, since 2007. The first hprints project set up the current repository on a basis of technical and policy requirements, and the second – ongoing – project has translated the authors' rights document “Licence to Publish” into Nordic languages, and are now conducting focused outreach to selected groups of researchers

No full textAs stated in the original application to Nordbib's Focus Area “Policy and visibility” (Work Package 1), the purpose of the project was to increase the awareness and understanding of the principles of Open Access by providing a dialogue among stakeholders on authors' rights and Open Access principles. The Nordbib Board pledged the grant with clauses for the project framework thereby changing the project deliverables to the following: 1. Legal translation of the Knowledge Exchange “Licence to Publish” document into Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic, and disseminating these to the Nordic researchers in general. 2. Devising a strategy for substantial outreach with respect to “Licence to publish”, authors' rights, self-archiving and the principles of Open Access, focusing on a number of cases in the Nordic social sciences and humanities but with the stipulation that the strategy be relevant and implementable to the STM (Science, Technology and Medicine) communities as well
Some aspects regarding matrimonial relations in the city of Arad in the XVIIIth century
No full textInternational audienceThis study proposed, first, to carry out, based on archive documents, an incursion as regards matrimonial relationships of XVIIIth century with all legal, economic and social connotations involved. The marriage contracts studied fall into a typology more closely of what was happening in the same period in Western Europe than in South Eastern Europe. This is because such acts have emerged within the former county of Arad in the first half of the century after the establishment of Habsburg domination and after the German colonists were brought into the area. Besides the juridical problems regarding the contractual liabilities of the spouses, the status of the children, some problems related to wealth and dowry, I tried to mark out some aspects regarding the everyday life of Arad's inhabitants in the XVIIIth century

No full textUsed on the Copyright licens Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/se/deed.en_GBA report about Research Information Systems in the Nordic Countries, Infrastructure, concepts and organizationThis report is commissioned by the Nordbib programme, and is based on a web survey of the current status of CRIS (Current Research Information Systems) and IR (Institutional Repositories) in the Nordic countries. The survey has been conducted to investigate how Nordic higher education institutions collect and present their research output. Do they use Institutional Repositories and/or Current Research Information Systems, are these systems separate or integrated, what software is used, and how are they staffed and financed? An important part of the survey was to analyse the perceived needs for national and Nordic coordination and support regarding such specific issues as rights management, central search services, educational and promotional materials etc. The survey results are presented against international developments in Open Access, both historical and current. The main purpose of the survey is to help Nordbib gather relevant information for promoting greater visibility to Nordic research and offer a background for creating a joint Nordic approach to further developments in Open Access. A presentation of the survey project was given at the Nordbib Workshop on ”Research Visibility – managing quality for better evaluation” 27-28 October, 2008. We would like to thank the members of the Nordbib workshop group for valuable viewpoints regarding the final formulations in the questionnaire. Multimodal Intercultural Information and Communication Technology - A Framework for Designing and Evaluating Multimodal Intercultural Communicators
No full textThe paper presents a framework, combined with a checklist for designing and evaluating multimodal, intercultural ICT, especially when embodied artificial communicators are used as front ends for data bases, as digital assistants, as tutors in pedagogical programs or players in games etc. Such a framework is of increasing interest, since the use of ICT across cultural boundaries in combination with the use of ICT by persons with low literacy skills is rapidly increasing. This development presents new challenges for intercultural ICT. A desideratum for interculturally sensitive artificial communicators is a generic, exportable system for interactive communication with a number of parameters that can be set to capture intercultural variation in communication. This means a system for a Generic, Multimodal, Intercultural Communicator (a GMIC)
