La imaginación sostenible: culturas y crisis económica en la España actual
No full textThis is an unedited draft, not for citation, of a work that has been accepted for publication by the journal Hispanic Review on its forthcoming Fall 2012 issue.Estudiar el contexto cultural de la actual crisis económica en España permite comprender las formas de vida que la propiciaron y también las que ahora intentan sobrevivir a ella. Frente al modelo del beneficio individual como fin último de la existencia que potenció la burbuja económica, se han desarrollan redes de colaboración y apoyo mutuo que han producido un rico sustrato cultural, favorecido por la expansión del acceso ciudadano a las nuevas tecnologías. En él germinan multitud de proyectos que entienden la cultura como un "procomún", es decir, como un bien compartido por quienes sostienen y disfrutan esos proyectos en cada caso (bibliotecas digitales, colectivos musicales, cooperativas de producción cultural, proyectos transmedia o redes de investigación colaborativa). Estas culturas procomunes generan una "imaginación sostenible", en tanto que apuestan por la reproducción de la vida en común frente a la burbuja individualista y productivista
Replayability in Strategic Computer Games
No full textThe empirical material is not included in the file.The idea for this master thesis originates in a curiosity concerning why so many of the strategy games from the 1990's are still being played today. Many of the games still have very active fans that modify their old favourite games for online play just so that they can share their passion with other fans around the world. What aspects about these strategy games is it that promotes the level of replayability that has kept them fresh while so many other games have disappeared from play. Out of this curiosity came the question: How do rules and aspects of narrative affect the replayability of a strategic computer game and why are some games replayed even after they have been completed multiple times? To discover what creates the replayability in the old strategy games a thorough analysis of Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares (MicroProse 1996) has been carried out. This analysis was compared with the responses from a qualitative internet survey posted on the fan forums of numerous of the most famous strategy games of the 1990's. The theoretical foundation of the thesis is in hermeneutics, ludology, narratology and flow theory. Together the analysis and the survey have yielded much information on how replayability is created in a strategy game. My conclusion states the nature of that information and suggests a few points that should be included in the production of a strategy game to make it replayable

Modelling Chinese dialect evolution
No full textDue to the specific sociolinguistic situation in China where very divergent linguistic varieties for a long time have been "roofed" by a common culture and a common writing system, the development of the Chinese dialects reflects a 'complex and intertwined evolu- tionary history' (Hamed and Wang 2006: 31). Chinese dialects are therefore a good test case for methods which no longer take the family tree as their primary evolutionary model. In this talk, we shall introduce and discuss the implications of network approaches by applying them to a recently compiled dataset covering translations of 180 concepts for 40 different di- atopic varieties of Chinese (Hóu 2004). Apart from the fact that cognacy information can be extracted from the data, this dataset has the great advantage of giving full phonetic records of all dialect words. This makes it possible to apply methods which work on cognate sets (Nelson-Sathi et al. 2011) as well as methods for computational sequence comparison (List 2010)
Cardinal Enea Silvio Piccolomini and the Development of Cardinal Protectors of Nations
No full textNational audienceThis article deals with the development of Cardinal Protectors of Nations in the 15th century. It is based partly on texts examined by Josef Wodka (1938), partly on the correspondence of Cardinal Enea Silvio Piccolomini published in the Opera Omnia edition of 1571 and the correpondence of King Christian 1. with the Papal Court. The author's interpretation of the development differs somewhat from Josef Wodka's in that it recognizes the decisive role of the Council of Basle in creating a legal base for cardinals representing royal interests at the Apostolic See. The Council agreed with the stance of Pope Martin V that cardinals should act as impartial and independent advisors of popes, but - reaching back to Avignonese precedents - it accepted a form of representation termed "promotorship" rather than "protectorship" of royal affairs. It did not indicate any difference of content between the two concepts, but only addressed the modalities of partiality and payment. This interpretation is based on the Conciliar Decree itself and on the Cardinal's correspondence which documents the practice at the Papal Court in the 1450's, including a formal arrangement of promotorship between the Cardinal and the Emperor, and negotiations concerning such a promotorship between the Cardinal and the King of Denmark

This article will briefly review one specific part of the complicated identity discourse, the question of social identity and space as an element of identity identity in the age of globalization. Celem artykułu jest zwięzłe przedstawienie specyficznego rodzaju złożonego dyskursu tożsamościowego – zagadnienia tożsamości społecznej, globalizacji oraz przestrzeni jako elementu tożsamości. Artykuł ukazuje wybrane spojrzenia na przestrzeń i tożsamość oraz relację między tymi pojęciami z zaznaczeniem roli procesów globalizacyjnych
