Economic Development, Sociopolitical Destabilization and Inequality

    No full text
International audienceIn the 1960s Mancur Olson and Samuel Huntington suggested that the positive correlationbetween per capita income and the level of sociopolitical destabilization that they detectedfor low and middle income countries might be partly accounted for by the growth of the inequalityassociated with the economic and technological development in these countries. Theempirical tests we perform generally support this hypothesis, but they also identify certainlimits for such an explanation. Our tests reveal for low and middle income countries a statisticallysignificant correlation between GDP per capita and the economic inequality levels, butthis correlation is not particularly strong. Earlier we found for the same countries significantlystronger positive correlations between GDP per capita and some important components ofsociopolitical destabilization, such as the intensity of political assassinations, general strikesand anti-government demonstrations. It is quite clear that the strong association betweenthe increase in the intensity of these components of sociopolitical destabilization and GDPper capita growth, can be explained by a much weaker tendency toward the growth of economicinequality only partly. In addition, our empirical tests suggest the presence of a certainthreshold level of about 40 points on the Gini scale, after crossing which one can expect aradical increase in levels of sociopolitical destabilization in general, and the intensity of terroristacts / guerrilla warfare and anti-government demonstrations in particular. Accordingto the World Bank, the value of the Gini coefficient for Russia is now just in this zone, whichsuggests that the further growth of inequality in Russia could lead to an abrupt increase inpolitical destabilization

Performance-as-Resistance and Resistance-as-Performance in the NO MUOS Movement in Sicily

    No full text
International audienceOne of the US-owned Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) installations was projected and built in Sicily, near Niscemi. Since 2012, NO MUOS activists have excogitated various forms of protest that are reminiscent of artistic performances and identitarian rituals. Additionally, a number of creators/performers across different art forms have supported the movement by referring to the NO MUOS resistance in their work. This article seeks to explore the connection between protest and performance in the symbolic practices staged within and outside the picket line. I argue that these protests/performances possess an identitarian content that points to the reclamation of Sicily's sovereignty against the hysteric militarisation of an imaginary North/South border in the Mediterranean.

    Akamatsu Waves

    No full text
Article paru dans l'Oxford Research Encyclopedia of PoliticsIn 1937, the Japanese economist Kaname Akamatsu discovered specific links between the rise and decline of the global peripheries. Akamatsu's theory of development describes certain mechanisms whose working results in the narrowing of the gap between the level of development of the economy of developing and developed countries, and, thus, in the restructuring of the relationships between the global core and the global periphery. Akamatsu developed his model on the basis of his analysis of the economic development of Japan before World War II, with a special emphasis on the development of the Japanese textile industry. Akamatsu's catch-up development includes three phases: import of goods, organization of the production of previously imported products, and export of those goods. This model proved to be productive for analyzing the development of many other developing countries, especially in East Asia, making the theory of flying geese popular among the economists of these countries, as well as the whole world. The " flying geese " model produces certain swings that may be denoted as Akamatsu waves. Akamatsu waves may be defined as cycles (with a period ranging from 20 to 60 years) that are connected with convergence and divergence of core and periphery of the World System in a way that explains cyclical upward and downward swings (at global and national levels) in the movements of the periphery countries as they catch up with the richer ones

Forthcoming Kondratieff wave, Cybernetic Revolution, and global ageing

    No full text
International audienceIn the present article we analyze the relationships between K-waves and major technological breakthroughs in history and offer forecasts about features of the sixth Kondratieff wave. We use for our analysis the basic ideas of long cycles' theory and related theories (theories of the leading sector, technological styles etc.) as well as the ideas of our own theory of production principles and production revolutions. The latest of production revolution is the Cybernetic Revolution that, from our point of view, started in the 1950s. We assume that in the 2030s and 2040s the sixth K-wave will merge with the final phase of the Cybernetic Revolution (which we call a phase of self-regulating systems). This period will be characterized by the breakthrough in medical technologies which will be capable to combine many other technologies into a single system of MANBRIC-technologies (medico-additive-nano-bio-roboto-info-cognitive technologies). The article also presents a forecast of the process of global ageing and argues why the technological breakthrough will occur in health care sector and connected spheres

Drapieżne czasopisma jako przykład nieetycznego publikowania

    No full text
International audienceThis paper describes the phenomenon of predatory journals, the characteristics of predatory journals, including spamming and using fake metrics, and the problems they cause for science. Predatory journals often fail to properly manage peer review, allowing pseudo-science to be published dressed up as authentic science. Predatory journals frequently have imaginary editorial boards, do not operate any quality control, are unclear about payment requirements and about ownership or location, include plagiarised content. Predatory publishers generally behave unethically. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects of this development and how researchers can avoid becoming victimized by them.

Alleggiu: a lentidão como princípio compositivo e horizonte colaborativo

    No full text
Abstract: In this work we present and discuss the conceptual premises that led to the composition of the piece Alleggiu. Furthermore, we document the collaborative revision process that took place prior to the performance of the piece. Finally, we offer a reading of both the composition and the performance of the piece within the epistemic dimension of slowness. Freed from the negative connotations discursively associated to it by the ideological dogma of progress, slowness turns into an ontological and epistemic instrument of resistance, in line with the thought of Franco Cassano. In addition, slowness democratises the collaboration between the composer and the performers
