"Meille Juustoportilla eläimet ovat tärkeitä" - Vastuullisuuden diskurssit suomalaisten ruokayritysten verkkosivuilla
Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan vastuullisuuden kuvaamisen keinoja suomalaisten ruokayritysten verkkosivuilla.
Tutkielman analyysi jakautuu viiteen osioon aineistosta havaittujen diskurssien perusteella. Analyysissa kiinnitetään huomiota erilaisiin kielellisiin piirteisiin, joilla vastuullisuuden diskurssit rakentuvat. Tällainen on esimerkiksi toistuva modaalisten verbien käyttö, jonka avulla viestitään tuotantoeläinten mahdollisuuksista esimerkiksi liikkumiseen.
Ambivalentteihin diskursseihin taas suhteutuvat puhetavat, joissa kuluttajia kannustetaan kierrätykseen: ympäristöongelmiin tarjotaan siis ratkaisuja, joita ihmisten on helppo tehdä vähentämättä kulutustaan. Hyödyllisiin diskursseihin taas suhteutuvat puhetavat, joissa eläinten ja ympäristön hyvinvointi näyttäytyvät tärkeinä. Mahdollinen jatkotutkimusaihe voisi olla esimerkiksi, miten luontoa kuvataan ruokayritysten vastuuviestinnässä
Bird–window collisions : A comprehensive dataset for the Neotropical region
Our primary objective was to compile a comprehensive dataset on bird–window collisions throughout the Neotropical region, including both published and unpublished sources. On May 12, 2020, we extensively disseminated invitations to provide data via email and social media platforms. By providing a template worksheet, we required standardized information from collaborators to complete and register their data. To better understand how these data were acquired (e.g., incidental observations and systematic procedures), we sent out a survey to all collaborators. We established rigorous validation criteria for data inclusion and conducted thorough curation procedures to ensure accuracy. After the filtering process, we compiled a total of 4103 bird–window collision reports. These came from 11 Neotropical countries, dating from 1946 to 2020, and revealing distinct regional patterns and potential seasonal patterns. The five most frequent orders were Passeriformes (2451), Columbiformes (520), Apodiformes (377), Psittaciformes (202), and Piciformes (186). Data on bird–window collisions were collected through a local specific systematic protocol (1419), by chance (1252), by government agencies (742), and by other approaches (632), while a few reports were collected by unknown procedures (58). The volume of records across months in our dataset suggests that there may be temporal patterns, with peaks: the first one in March–April and the second one in October–November, which seem to align with the major migration and reproduction seasons. This dataset represents the first comprehensive effort in the Neotropical region focused on bird–window collision data, providing valuable insights for further scientific advancements and conservation policies. The data are free from copyright or proprietary restrictions. Please cite this data paper when using the data in publications or scientific presentations.Peer reviewe
Preoperative Mechanical Ventilation Prior to Surgical Repair for Type A Aortic Dissection: Incidence, Risk, and Outcomes
Objectives: Several conditions associated with type A aortic dissection may require preoperative invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The current literature lacks data on this subset of patients’ prevalence and postoperative outcomes. This study aims to investigate this unexplored issue in a multicenter European registry. Methods: Data from 3735 patients included in the European Registry of Type A Aortic Dissection (ERTAAD) were the subject of this analysis. Bootstrapped Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) logistic regression was performed for variable selection to identify key predictors of hospital death. In the second step, a multilevel multivariable logistic regression (MMLR) was carried out, given the clustered structure of the data. Results: A total of 346 (9.3%) out of 3735 patients required preoperative IMV. Compared to the non-IMV patients, patients requiring IMV had a significantly higher rate of organ malperfusion (52% vs. 35%, p < 0.001) and a higher proportion of tears in the aortic root (p = 0.048). The in-hospital mortality rate among IMV patients was 38% vs. 15% in non-IMV patients (p < 0.001), without a difference in post-discharge survival (p = 0.84). At the MMLR, patients who required IMV had 135% higher odds of in-hospital death compared to the remaining patients. IMV yielded the second highest odds in the prediction model for in-hospital mortality (OR 2.13, CI 1.60 to 2.85, p < 0.001). Among IMV patients, the extension of surgery to the aortic arch was significantly associated with increased in-hospital mortality (p < 0.001, OR 2.98). In multivariable analysis, preoperative IMV was independently associated with increased odds of in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: The need for invasive mechanical ventilation before surgical repair for type A aortic dissection is not infrequent. In this subpopulation, the in-hospital mortality rate was twofold compared to patients who did not require IMV. The awareness of the preoperative risk profile and outcomes of this subset of patients should urge surgeons to tailor the surgical strategy more appropriately to improve the immediate postoperative results
Tutkimusmenetelmäksi on valittu virheanalyysi, jossa on yhteensä viisi virhekategoriaa: poisjätetty sana, lisätty sana, kääntämättä jätetty sana, väärin käännetty sana, selittävä vastine, epäidiomaattinen vastine ja kielioppivirhe.
'Suotta sanottu?' : Marshland themes in Finnish landscape paintings made in the 1850s–1970s
Soiden ja kansallisten taideaarteiden sanotaan olevan suomalaisille rakkaita. Mutta onko soita kuvattu taideteoksissa? Miltä suokuvat näyttävät ja mitä ne viestivät? Tutkimus on laadullinen, aineistopohjainen sisällönanalyysi, jossa tarkastellaan otosta suomalaisia, 1850–1970-luvuilla tehtyjä suoaiheisia maisemamaalauksia. Teoksia tarkastellaan modernisoituvan Suomen kontekstissa, suhteessa toisiinsa, ympäristöhistoriaan, suomalaiseen taideinstituutioon ja kansallismaisemakuvaan. Näkökulma tutkimuksessa on suomaisemamaalausten esteettisessä voimassa.
Kiinnostus kohdistuu suoaiheita esittävien maisemamaalausten ikonografian ohella teoksista aiemmin kirjoitettuun, tai ei-kirjoitettuun, pohtien teoksille ja suoaiheille annettuja merkityksiä. Taideteoksista etsitään dikotomian sijaan tunnustelevien moderniteettikokemusten merkkejä katsomalla niitä suoekosysteemeille ominaisen sekoittuvuuden ja modernisaatiotutkija Marshall Bermanin ajattelusta johdetun, muutoksen kompleksisuuteen uteliaisuudella ja empatialla suhtautuvan, katseen avulla. Taideteosten suokuvia luetaan osin luonnon soiden kielellä tavoitteena houkutella näennäisesti mykkä suokuva puhumaan. Aineiston hermeneuttista lähiluentaa ohjaa representaatioteorian kysymysasetelma: miten teos esittää suota, millaisia muuttuvan ajan kokemuksia maalaukset mahdollisesti edustavat sekä mitä merkityksiä suokuvat tuottavat kansallismaisema-ajatteluun?
Tutkimus avaa uusia näkymiä suoaiheen merkitykseen Suomen taidehistoriassa ja mahdollisesti laajemminkin yhteiskunnassa. Taidehistorian ja ympäristötieteiden välinen keskustelu taidekuvan äärellä osoittautui hedelmälliseksi lähtökohdaksi lisäten ymmärrystä taideteoksen aiheen sisäisistä merkityksistä sekä avaten uusia tulkintamahdollisuuksia teokseen. It is said that marshlands and national art treasures are dear to Finns. But are marshlands depicted in works of art, and if so, what do they look like and do they have something to say to us? This study is a qualitative content analysis examining a sample of Finnish landscape paintings with marshland themes made in the 1850s–1970s. The works are examined in the context of modernising Finland, in relation to each other, environmental history, the Finnish art institution and the national landscape image. The perspective of the study is in the aesthetic power of the wetland landscape paintings.
In addition to the iconography of landscape paintings depicting marshland themes, interest is focused on what has been written, or unwritten, about the works, reflecting on the meanings given to the works and marshland themes. By looking at the images with the idea of an empathetic gaze inspired by modernity researcher Marshall Berman’s thinking, and from the perspective of the intermingling characteristics of marshland ecosystems, the study seeks complex, uncertain experiences of modernity, instead of dichotomy. The depictions of marshlands in the artworks are read partly in the language of natural swamps, with the aim of enticing the seemingly mute wetland image to speak. The hermeneutic close reading of the material is guided by the questions of representation theory: how does the work present the swamp, what kind of modernity experiences do the paintings possibly represent, and what meanings do the marshland images produce for national landscape thinking?
The research opens up new perspectives on the significance of the marshland motif in Finnish art history and possibly in society more broadly. The interdisciplinary discussion between art history and environmental studies around the artwork proved to be a fruitful starting point, increasing the understanding of the intrathematic meanings of the artwork and opening up new possibilities for interpretation of the work
Euroopan unionin digipalveluasetus : Vallan palauttamista vai alustojen vallan legitimointia?
This thesis aims to explore how policy that targets information intensive industries can be drafted to ensure it solves the problems that have led to the pursuit of policy action. To do this, this thesis focuses on the European Union’s Digital Services Act Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 and discusses the problems faced in the European digital public sphere and digital services today, especially from the impact of the very large online platforms. I use Carol Bacchi’s “what’s the problem represented to be?” approach to conduct a policy analysis of the Digital Services Act and its problem definitions. The European digital sphere has encountered several challenges from mis-, dis-, and malinformation, to the inability to provide legitimate information to citizens in the event of the COVID-19 pandemic and foster innovation for European digital champions. In order to solve the right problems and find sufficient policy measures to tackle them, one must define what the right problem is. Instead of focusing on fixing the symptoms, in an interconnected world, it is increasingly important to ensure we are also solving the underlying systemic problems causing the visible symptoms and policy challenges.
Thus, my thesis poses two research questions, first, how does the DSA frame the problems related to Very Large Online Platforms when it comes to creating a safe and trustworthy online environment? And secondly, what are the effects of the DSA’s problem representations, especially in terms of institutional responses, user agency, and broader democratic governance?
My methodology is a poststructuralist approach to policy analysis that investigates the presuppositions and assumptions in the representation of the problems, as well as the origins of the problem representation, what is left unproblematic, as well as the effects of the problem representation and where it has been “produced, disseminated and defended” in addition to where it has been “questioned, disrupted and replaced” (Bacchi, 1999).
I argue that targeting the root causes of the symptoms of an unsafe online environment and the systemic risks it poses is still needed to “achieve the objectives of [the DSA] Regulation, and in particular to improve the functioning of the internal market and ensure a safe and transparent online environment” (European Commission, 2022, p. 11). To explore a way to target the root causes, over the symptoms, I use the policy analysis rubric of Pickard and Picard (2017).
My analysis concludes that the DSA’s problem definition fails to acknowledge and restrict the power of the Very Large Online Platforms, and in fact institutionalises it by legitimising their power as now their reporting requirements and position as a rule-maker and rule enforcer are codified in EU law.
Based on the analysis; my thesis recommends that in order to guarantee a successful implementation of the Digital Services Act, the European Union must consider policy areas outside of the Digital Services Act. Citizens’ rights ought to be at the centre of designing policy frameworks that govern the digital public sphere and digital policy. When discussing systemic risks and systemic problems, intergovernmental cooperation and the willingness for integration between different policy areas and institutional responsibilities will be vital. By proposing a framework for problem definitions for policy design, this research offers new ideas for creating more future proofed policy and institutional capabilities that can target systemic risks posed by a more interconnected world and support policy that not only fosters innovation but also a safe and transparent online environment. My thesis also shows a novel way of researching policy from a holistic standpoint, and providing a much-needed respite from fixing one problem and causing another to surface elsewhere.Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma tarkastelee, kuinka informaatiointensiivisiin toimialoihin kohdistuvaa politiikkaa voidaan laatia niin, että se todella ratkaisee ne ongelmat, jotka ovat johtaneet poliittisen toimen tarpeeseen. Tutkielma keskittyy Euroopan unionin Digipalveluasetukseen (Digital Services Act, DSA, EU:n asetus 2022/2065) ja tarkastelee eurooppalaisen digitaalisen julkisen tilan ja digipalveluiden nykyisiä haasteita, erityisesti erittäin suurten verkkoalustojen vaikutuksen näkökulmasta. Analyysissä sovelletaan Carol Bacchin "what’s the problem represented to be?"
Itämeren toimintasuunnitelma sensitiiviset lintualueet Suomen merialueella : Linnuston huomiointi tuulivoimala-alueiden suunnittelussa merelle
Merituulivoimala-alueet vaikuttavat lintuihin monin tavoin.
Riskialttiimpien alueiden välttäminen on varmin tapa vähentää haitallisia vaikutuksia linnustoon.
Maakuntakaavoihin on sisällytettävä tiukat suunnittelumääräykset.
Selvityksien yhdenmukaisuuden ja tiedon luotettavuuden parantamiseksi on laadittava ohjeistukset merituulivoiman linnustovaikutusten arvioimiseksi ja haitan merkittävyyden luokittelemiseksi eri suunnitteluvaiheissa. Esimerkiksi selvitysmenetelmiin tulisi sisällyttää useita vuosia kattavat tutka- ja GPS-pohjaiset menetelmät, jotta saadaan tietoja lintumääristä ja lintujen käyttäytymisestä eri olosuhteissa ja alueilla. Merialuesuunnitelmissa ja maakuntakaavoituksessa on arvioitava tuulivoimalahankkeiden yhteisvaikutukset muuttaviin, kerääntyviin ja pesiviin lintuihin. Lajikohtainen arviointi on tehtävä ylimaakunnallisesti, huomioiden erikseen Suomen- ja Pohjanlahden päämuuttoreitit.Sensitive bird areas in the Finnish maritime area for the Baltic Sea Action Plan
Offshore wind farms affect birds in many ways. Due to the displacement effect, many bird species avoid the power plant areas, which prevents them from feeding at their preferred sites during migration and breeding periods. In addition, many bird species avoid flying through power plant areas, which can have significant energetic impacts. The risk of colliding with power plants varies, and is influenced by speciesspecific flight altitudes and behaviour, flight activity at different times of the day and the ability to avoid power plants. The combined effects of wind farms can lead to changes in bird population sizes through reduced survival and reproductive success.
The best method to reduce adverse impacts on birds is to avoid the most sensitive areas. This study has identified sensitive bird areas on the Finnish coast and made recommendations to support the sustainability of offshore wind farms and land use planning. The work is part of HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan, which calls for avoiding the placement of energy installations in areas of importance for birds, such as breeding areas, migration routes and staging areas.
The AVISTEP method was used to determine the sitespecific bird sensitivity during breeding respective migration. The analyses are based on data from Metsähallitus, BirdLife Finland and the Finnish environment institute.
The areas were divided into four categories according to their sensitivity to wind power: low, moderate, high and very high sensitivity. These categories can be used to assess the suitability of different areas for wind energy production as well as for discerning the need for further assessments to ensure the final suitability of a given area for wind power plants.
The main recommendations of the study are: The placement of wind power plants must respect the precautionary principle. In general, the planning of wind power should be focussed to the economic zone and the outer parts of the general water area, avoiding shallow coastal areas and other highrisk areas such as concentration areas of the main migration routes. In areas where wind power is suitable with reservations, comprehensive studies and projectspecific impact assessments should be carried out. Strict planning provisions must be included in regional plans.
To improve the consistency of studies and the reliability of data, guidelines for assessing the impact of offshore wind energy on birds and for classifying the significance of the impact at different planning stages should be developed. For example, survey methods should include multiyear radar and GPS-based methods to provide information on bird numbers and behaviour under different conditions and in different areas. Marine spatial plans and regional planning must assess the combined effects of wind farm projects on migratory, aggregating and breeding birds. Species-specific assessments should be carried out on a transnational basis, taking separately into account the main migration routes in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.Känsliga fågelområden på Finlands havsområden för aktionsplanen för Östersjön
Strikta planeringsbestämmelser måste inkluderas i regionala planer.
Sleep medicine has matured into a recognised medical discipline, characterised by defined diagnostic concepts, evidence-based treatments, and significant progress in understanding sleep physiology and disorders. Sleep and its disturbances impact virtually every aspect of health and well-being. The major categories of sleep disorders include insomnia, neurological and psychiatric sleep disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, and paediatric sleep disorders. Breakthroughs in biomedical research have deepened clinical expertise across each of these domains. Although sleep medicine has historically developed from various specialties, the current approach emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration. Today, diagnostic and therapeutic pathways are well established, supported by professional standards outlined in nosological classifications, clinical guidelines, and structured frameworks of competencies and skills. Despite the universal importance of sleep and the high prevalence of sleep disorders, the field continues to face systemic challenges-most notably limited access to care, inadequate funding for clinical services, and insufficient investment in research. The central challenge is to balance the integration of new opportunities with the resolution of persistent uncertainties. However, advances in technology and the emergence of precision medicine offer promising prospects for progress. Sleep medicine stands at a crossroads. Its future will depend on rearticulating its mission and vision, addressing structural shortcomings, embracing innovation, and affirming its essential role in promoting public health.Peer reviewe
Differential contributions of lean and fat mass on bone mineral density in Asian women of reproductive age : the Singapore Preconception Study of Long-Term Maternal and Child Outcomes study
The relationships between fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and bone mass are complex with significant implications for obesity, sarcopenia, and osteoporosis later in life. While greater LM is associated with higher BMD, the association between FM and BMD is less clear. Such relationships warrant further investigation, especially in Asians, who have a higher risk of metabolic diseases and osteoporotic fractures compared to Western populations. This study investigated the associations of LM, FM, and modifiable risk factors with BMD in Asian women aged 18-45 yr. A total of 191 women from the Singapore Preconception Study of Long-Term Maternal and Child Outcomes (S-PRESTO) cohort study underwent DXA scanning at the first study visit for BMD and body composition measurements. LM, FM, and four body composition phenotypes derived from dichotomizing LM and FM were related to cohort-specific Z-scores of BMD at FN (BMDFN), LS (BMDLS), and whole body (BMDWB). Adjusting for covariates, LM showed positive associations with Z-BMDFN, [beta (95%CI)], [0.38 (0.22, 0.55)], Z-BMDLS [0.43 (0.25, 0.62)], and Z-BMDWB, [0.63 (0.44, 0.81)]. Fat mass by contrast showed an inverse association only with Z-BMDWB, [-0.39 (-0.58, -0.20)]. Compared to women with healthy body composition (higher LM-lower FM), women with lower LM-higher FM had similar BMI, mean (SD) 20.9 (1.5) kg/m2 but disproportionately higher percent fat, 38.4 (2.2%), and lower Z-BMDFN [-0.58 (-0.97, -0.18)], Z-BMDLS [-0.41 (-0.81, 0.00)], and Z-BMDWB [-0.66 (-1.06, -0.25)]. Chinese women had lower BMD than Malay women. Physical activity and education attainment were positively, while the age of menarche was negatively associated with BMD. These findings in young women underscore the importance of early interventions recognizing ethnic differences in BMD to improve lifecourse musculoskeletal health. Most importantly, intervention strategies for Asian women should focus on healthy body composition beyond BMI, with a goal to preserve or increase LM.The relationships between fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and bone mass are complex with significant implications for obesity, frailty, and bone fractures later in life. While greater LM is recognized to be associated with higher BMD, a measure of bone mass, higher adiposity measured by BMI has been conventionally shown to be associated with BMD. This study investigated these complex relationships in young Asian women, the population with a higher risk of metabolic diseases and osteoporotic fractures compared to those of Western populations. Among these young women aged 18-45 yr, ethnic variations in BMD were observed with Chinese women having a lower BMD than Malay women. Among Chinese women, women with lower LM had lower BMD regardless of level of adiposity. Women who were physically more active and who had higher educational attainment had higher BMD. These findings in young women underscore the importance of early interventions recognizing ethnic differences in BMD to improve lifecourse musculoskeletal health. Most importantly, intervention strategies for Asian women should focus on healthy body composition beyond BMI, with a goal to preserve or increase LM.Peer reviewe
Exploration of genres in David Hume’s "History of England" using machine learning approaches
Abstract: David Hume (1711-1776) was an 18th century philosopher and historian. His rendition of English history, “The History of England, From the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688” (published in 1754-1762), combines two genres: classical narrative history and newly emerged philosophical history, that was concerned with a wider range of topics. It has long been believed that the "History of England" includes fragments that are stylistically and topically close to Hume’s essays. The goal of this study is to automatically find such fragments. The problem is approached as a classification task. A machine learning model, trained on a dataset of Hume’s texts with genre labels, assigns genre probabilities to each paragraph in the "History". The Kleinberg algorithm is used to highlight fragments where the probability of a given genre is increased. Analysis shows that the extracted fragments are, indeed, topically or stylistically different from classical history. Thus, Hume's "History of England" combines classical historical narratives with philosophical instructions
