Menetelmäni on tekstianalyyttinen lähiluku, jossa tarkastelen romaania aiempaa tutkimusta hyödyntäen.
Real-world goal-directed behavior reveals aberrant functional brain connectivity in children with ADHD
Functional connectomics is a popular approach to investigate the neural underpinnings of developmental disorders of which attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent. Nonetheless, neuronal mechanisms driving the aberrant functional connectivity resulting in ADHD symptoms remain largely unclear. Whereas resting state activity reflecting intrinsic tonic background activity is only vaguely connected to behavioral effects, naturalistic neuroscience has provided means to measure phasic brain dynamics associated with overt manifestation of the symptoms. Here we collected functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in three experimental conditions, an active virtual reality (VR) task where the participants execute goal-directed behaviors, a passive naturalistic Video Viewing task, and a standard Resting State condition. Thirty-nine children with ADHD and thirty-seven typically developing (TD) children participated in this preregistered study. Functional connectivity was examined with network-based statistics (NBS) and graph theoretical metrics. During the naturalistic VR task, the ADHD group showed weaker task performance and stronger functional connectivity than the TD group. Group differences in functional connectivity were observed in widespread brain networks: particularly subcortical areas showed hyperconnectivity in ADHD. More restricted group differences in functional connectivity were observed during the Video Viewing, and there were no group differences in functional connectivity in the Resting State condition. These observations were consistent across NBS and graph theoretical analyses, although NBS revealed more pronounced group differences. Furthermore, during the VR task and Video Viewing, functional connectivity in TD controls was associated with task performance during the measurement, while Resting State activity in TD controls was correlated with ADHD symptoms rated over six months. We conclude that overt expression of the symptoms is correlated with aberrant brain connectivity in ADHD. Furthermore, naturalistic paradigms where clinical markers can be coupled with simultaneously occurring brain activity may further increase the interpretability of psychiatric neuroimaging findings.Peer reviewe
Search for pair production of heavy particles decaying to a top quark and a gluon in the lepton+jets final state in proton–proton collisions at s = 13 Te V
Abstract A search is presented for the pair production of new heavy resonances, each decaying into a top quark (t) or antiquark and a gluon (g). The analysis uses data recorded with the CMS detector from proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 Te V at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . Events with one muon or electron, multiple jets, and missing transverse momentum are selected. After using a deep neural network to enrich the data sample with signal-like events, distributions in the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all reconstructed objects are analyzed in the search for a signal. No significant deviations from the standard model prediction are found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction squared for the pair production of excited top quarks in the t ∗ → tg decay channel. The upper limits range from 120 to 0.8 fb for a t ∗ with spin-1/2 and from 15 to 1.0 fb for a t ∗ with spin-3/2. These correspond to mass exclusion limits up to 1050 and 1700 Ge V for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 t ∗ particles, respectively. These are the most stringent limits to date on the existence of t ∗ → tg resonances
Nuorten aikuisten subjektiviteetin muotoutuminen suomalaisissa nuorten tukijärjestelmissä
The focus of this dissertation is on Finnish youth support systems, especially on scrutinizing the practices of youth workshops and outreach youth work (OYW). The background of this research is formed by the current ubiquitous global neoliberal system. Drawing on a discursive ethnographic study conducted in the medium-sized city of Finland, this research asks: how do outreach youth work and youth workshops as support systems contribute to the formation of young people’s subjectivities, and what role do regimes of practices play in shaping youth selves; what are the underlying techniques of neoliberal governmentality that are utilized to construct and modify the subjectivities of young people, and how are these techniques manifested within youth support systems; and how do youth support systems contribute to moulding young people's subjectivities in a way that renders them both vulnerable and employable for the demands of the neoliberal labour market, and what are the politico-economic contextual factors that influence this dual transformation?
The research data constructed for this dissertation consists of 20 interviews with young people, and 20 interviews with youth workers and other officials working with young people. The data produced also include an ethnographic field diary. Methodologically, the dissertation is based on discursive ethnographic research. Theoretically, research is based on post-structural thinking and especially on the writings of Michel Foucault. The theory of the dissertation utilizes concepts such as regimes of practices, subjectivation and neoliberal governmentality.
The dissertation includes three articles and a summary report. Together they challenge the practices and policies of current youth support systems in Finland by showing the gaps between well-intentioned policy reports in the administration and well-meaning practices in the field. In addition, the real circumstances young people are in has been examined.
The main findings outline in this dissertation are as following. Young people are governed by two neoliberal techniques, namely, those of economic governing and psy-disciplined governing. Economic governing entails contractualism, performative effectiveness, datafication, entrepreneurialism, and perpetuating the poverty and indebtedness of young people. The aim of economic governing is the employability of young people. Psy-disciplinary techniques include narratives of the “crises” and “deviancy” of youth, and the therapization, psychologization and psychiatrization of regimes of practices of OYW and workshops that all tend to make young subjects vulnerable, but at the same time resilient, flexible and positive subject, in the subject-shaping processes of neoliberal governmentality.
As an additional key finding, this research makes the proposal for showing the possible causes of social problems such as youth unemployment or educational underachievement. In the dissertation, I claim that the causes derive from the neoliberal operations of exploitative social and economic systems within neoliberally structured capitalist society. In the dissertation, as one possible solution to this conundrum would be to raise consciousness about the resistance to young people’s subordinated social and economic positions and to struggle against the neoliberal attempts to obscure the continued existence of structural inequalities. This research proposes that in the discursive practices of the youth support systems one should not individualize young people, not to increase entrepreneurialism among young people, and not to psychologize and victimize young people.
The last key finding suggests that we need to dissolve the distinction between representations of young people and the real circumstances they are in. This dissolution is important since the political significance of the problem of youth support systems is because youth support systems are located at the point of conjunction of the discipline of the body and the control of the population. The main findings raise the question of should “NEET” (Not in Employment, Education or Training) young people ‘at risk’ feel any obligation or obedience towards a neoliberal consumer society (with its youth support systems) that relegates them to a form of social and economic machinery of exploitation and alienation.Väitöskirjani keskittyy nuorten tukijärjestelmiin Suomessa, erityisesti etsivän nuorisotyön ja nuorten työpajan käytäntöjen analysointiin. Nykyinen, kaikkialla vaikuttava, uusliberaali maailmanjärjestys muodostaa tutkimukseni taustan.
Tämän eron ymmärtäminen on tärkeää, sillä nuorten tukijärjestelmien poliittinen merkitys riippuu nuorten tukijärjestelmien yhteiskunnallisesta sijainnista, jossa risteää populaation kontrolli ja kurinalainen keho.

The Cumulative Effects of EU Sustainability Legislation (CEULA) : Impacts on Finnish firms
The CEULA project assesses the cumulative effects of five EU sustainability regulatory instruments on large Finnish firms and their global value chains. It addresses the following issues: the cumulative impacts of the regulations on Finnish firms, firm preparedness for current and future regulations, and the feasibility of fulfilling obligations through a unified CSR management system. The analysis focuses on the Regulation on Deforestation-free Products, the Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the Regulation on Prohibiting Products Made with Forced Labour, and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, with case studies from the agri-food, forestry, mining and textiles sectors based on in-depth interviews with representatives of Finnish firms. Our findings indicate a divide between Finnish firms regarding preparedness and highlight challenges such as a reactive approach to sustainability, confusion regarding regulations, conflicting requirements and uncertainties about resource allocation. Well-prepared firms express confidence in their readiness but are concerned about supplier compliance. The report provides recommendations for both Finnish firms and authorities, emphasising the importance of collaboration within value chains, the establishment of cross-functional task forces, stakeholder engagement, clear communication and mechanisms for continuous improvement. The steps outlined aim to enhance actionable sustainability practices and provide clear guidance on navigating complex regulatory landscapes
Extracellular vesicles in lung donor plasma : Potential indicators of donor organ quality
Objective: Brain death induces systemic inflammation and hemodynamic changes that can lead to lung injury, impacting the quality of donor organs for transplantation. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-derived nanoparticles that carry functional biomolecules and reflect the physiological state of their cells of origin. We hypothesized that EVs from brain-dead donors may indicate lung injury and may be used to predict primary graft dysfunction (PGD) in lung transplant recipients. Methods: We performed transcriptomic profiling of plasma EVs from 44 brain-dead lung donors and 9 healthy controls using next-generation sequencing. Differential gene expression was assessed, followed by pathway enrichment analyses. The results were validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using the study cohort and an independent cohort. Variable importance of projection score analysis and regression models were used to identify EV transcripts associated with PGD in recipients. Results: Transcriptomic analysis revealed that 13% of protein-coding genes were differentially expressed in lung donor EVs compared with controls, with 92% of these genes upregulated. Upregulated genes were enriched in pathways related to inflammation, coagulation, tissue remodeling, and metabolism. Seven key EV transcripts, RAD51D, ABL2, FGFR1, WDR82, PTBP3, OPRL1, and XG were identified as potential PGD indicator. These transcripts were associated with processes such as DNA damage repair, signal transduction, and inflammation, which may contribute to posttransplant lung injury. Conclusions: Donor plasma EVs carry distinct transcriptomic signatures associated with injury and inflammation. Specific EV transcripts, such as RAD51D and XG, hold promise as independent predictive biomarkers for PGD, possibly providing new tools for evaluating donor organ quality and improving lung transplant outcomes.Peer reviewe
Translational photobiology : towards dynamic lighting in indoor horticulture
Crop productivity depends on the ability of plants to thrive across different growth environments. In nature, light conditions fluctuate due to diurnal and seasonal changes in direction, duration, intensity, and spectrum. Laboratory studies, predominantly conducted with arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), have provided valuable insights into the metabolic and regulatory strategies that plants employ to cope with varying light intensities. However, there has been less focus on how horticultural crops tolerate dynamically changing light conditions during the photoperiod. In this review we connect insights from photobiology in model plants to the application of dynamic lighting in indoor horticulture. We explore how model species respond to fluctuating light intensities and discuss how this knowledge could be translated for new lighting solutions in controlled environment agriculture.Peer reviewe
Englannin mandatiivivaihtelu : Kieliopillinen analyysi ja brittienglantiin keskittyvä korpuspohjainen monimuuttuja-analyysi
This thesis seeks to update the conceptual and methodological toolkit used in the analysis of the English mandative alternation, then demonstrates the application of the updated concepts and methods in a corpus-based variationist multivariate analysis (N = 2,253) that includes 29 variables potentially predictive of the mandative alternation in contemporary British English newswriting.
The most productive syntactic context for what remains of the English subjunctive, the mandative alternation is characterized by a matrix clause that expresses deontic or dynamic modality and governs a declarative complement clause (often called a that-clause) whose modalized/irrealis status is marked either A) morphologically through an uninflected "subjunctive" verb, B) periphrastically through the use of should as a desemanticized "mood marker" C) periphrastically by a modal verb that harmonically echoes the matrix modality, or D) not at all, as when an ordinary tensed "indicative" verb is used:
A. Madonna’s status demands that she remain current.
B. Madonna’s status demands that she should remain current.
C. Madonna’s status demands that she must remain current.
D. Madonna’s status demands that she remains current.
The study begins with a grammatical analysis of the phenomenon, paying especial attention to its hitherto underappreciated aspects. It reviews the criteria previously employed to identify mandative subjunctives, implementing a revision of the sequence-of-tenses criterion. It draws attention to the distinction between modal harmony and independent complement modality, two phenomena that look similar in involving subordinated modal verbs but are radically different from the standpoint of variationist analysis, even though previous research has usually treated them as one. It improves upon earlier methods used in the empirical identification of mandative triggers, i.e. words or phrases capable of licensing a mandative that-clause, ultimately circumscribing the multivariate analysis to 61 such items. It discusses the previously underexplored phenomenon of non-syntactic licensing, where the semantic licensor of the subjunctive/alternant is distinct from the syntactic governor of the that-clause. It puts forth a novel hypothesis regarding the 20th-century re-emergence of the mandative subjunctive, suggesting that the modern phenomenon may have originated as a bare infinitive governed by an implicit do rather than as a revival of the ancient subjunctive form or the omission of a modal auxiliary. It details the methodological challenges arising from polysemy on the "licensor end" (triggers such as suggest) and the "complement end" (more vs. less grammaticized instances of should) of mandative constructions, calling particular attention to the problem of "pseudomandativity," where a non-mandative instance of a polysemous governor combines with a subordinate modal harmonic with its mandative sense to create the appearance (and often the pragmatic effect) of a mandative construction without actually being one. The multivariate analysis then proceeds to investigate the importance of these and over two dozen other potentially predictive factors in a purpose-built corpus containing 19 million words of British newswriting evenly split between the early 1990s and the late 2010s.
Carried out using Bayesian multinomial mixed-effects logistic regression, the statistical analysis provides strong confirmatory evidence of the predictive importance of trigger identity, diachrony, matrix tense, complement negation and trigger-to-complement distance, as well as suggesting a number of previously unidentified predictors. Generalizations relating to the trigger (such as its part-of-speech or frequency in mandative use) are predictively useful as well, although the added value is modest when the trigger's lexical identity is already known. There is also tentative support for the expected subjunctivizing effect of complement passivization as well as of be as the complement verb, but heavy collinearity between the two factors renders their independent effects difficult to disentangle. More novel findings include the apparent predictive importance of extraposition and non-syntactic licensing of the mandative complement, the agentivity of its subject, and the phonological complexity of the subordinate verb. By contrast, hypotheses of ambiguity avoidance through selection of non-indicatives under polysemous triggers or of periphrastic variants in contexts with neutralization of the subjunctive-indicative contrast are soundly rejected. Altogether, the results strongly corroborate various aspects of Rohdenburg's Complexity Principle, as well as the notion that subjunctive VPs are less finite than ones involving an indicative verb or modal periphrasis. Suggested avenues of future research include confirmatory testing of the novel results in larger datasets, investigation of the extent to which these generalize to other varieties of English, and the inclusion of non-finite complementational options within the envelope of mandative alternation.Tämä monografia tutkii nykybrittienglannin mandatiivivaihtelua kieliopinteorian ja korpuslingvistiikan keinoin.
Mandatiivivaihtelu on subjunktiivin produktiivisin käyttökonteksti nykyenglannissa. Siinä deonttista, dynaamista tai direktiivistä modaalisuutta ilmaisevaa päälausetta täydentää that-sivulause, jossa esiintyy neljää erilaista finiittiverbilauseketta. Subjunktiivi (A) on verbin taipumaton perusmuoto, indikatiivi (B) normaalisti taipuva finiittiverbi, should-mandatiivissa (C) on kyse modalisaatiomorfeemiksi kieliopillistuneen should-apuverbin käytöstä, ja modaaliharmoniassa (D) sivulauseeseen valikoituu jokin päälauseen modaalisuutta toistava modaaliverbi:
A. Madonna’s status demands that she remain current.
B. Madonna’s status demands that she remains current.
C. Madonna’s status demands that she should remain current.
D. Madonna’s status demands that she must remain current.
Kieliopillinen kuvaus nostaa esiin aiemman tutkimuksen puutteellisesti huomioimia seikkoja.
Atomic Layer Deposition of Ti x Fe2-x O3 Photoanodes and Photocurrent Response Optimization Using the Response Surface Methodology
Hematite (Fe2O3) is a promising visible-light-active semiconductor material for photoelectrocatalytic applications; however, it has yet to achieve its theoretical maximum efficiency. Researchers globally are making significant efforts to enhance its performance and surpass the current efficiency limitations. Here, we report the photoelectrocatalytic performance of Ti x Fe2-x O3 films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using FeCp2 and Ti(OMe)4 as precursors. The response surface methodology (RSM) with a face-centered central composite design (FC-CCD) was used to model and optimize the photocurrent response of Ti x Fe2-x O3 thin film photoanodes. Deposition parameters, including the cycle ratio of TiO2 to Fe2O3, total number of ALD cycles, and deposition temperature, were selected as independent variables, while the photocurrent density (PCD) at 1.23 and 1.70 V vs RHE was used as the response variable. Thin film depositions were carried out according to the FC-CCD design matrix, followed by postannealing at 500 degrees C for 1 h in air. The films were then evaluated for their photocurrent response using a photoelectrochemical cell under standard AM 1.5G illumination, 100 mW/cm2. The experimental photocurrent responses were fitted to a second-order polynomial equation, resulting in the development of a mathematical model that establishes a relationship between the deposition parameters and PCD of Ti x Fe2-x O3 photoanode. Analysis of model parameters revealed that film thickness and dopant concentration are the most significant factors influencing the PCD of Ti x Fe2-x O3 photoanode. This study confirms that RSM-based FC-CCD can be efficiently applied for the modeling and optimization of photocurrent response of Ti x Fe2-x O3 photoanodes.Peer reviewe
