Tradition as the foundation of a new compositional theory; Paul Hindemith: Ludus tonalis

    No full text
Paul Hindemith is one of the most significant composers and music theorist of the 20th century. In a turbulent time of searching for new ideas and ways of music development, with the aim of creating his own compositional theory, Hindemith observed the nature of musical material. Considering that the development of music must be based on traditional foundations that can be integrated with contemporary ideas, Hindemith creates his own compositional theory on the solid foundations of tradition. First part of this master's thesis presents Hindemiths’ compositional theory, while the second part brings observation on his compositional principles in fugues of the Ludus tonalis piano cycle. Purpose of detailed analysis of the fugues is to determine which traditional features the composer retains, and which ones he replaces with his own expressive and technical means. Third chapter brings brief presentation on the use of Hindemith's compositional technique on excerpts from the fugues of the Ludus tonalis cycle, with the aim of examination his compositional principles in a practical sense. Studying Hindemith’s music may be interesting to all those who are fond of the sounds of the music of old masters, as well to those who are open to new ideas, because his music represents a synthesis of old and new musical thought

    Themes in Pop Art

    No full text
The final paper deals with the themes that preoccupied pop artists in their works. Leading American and British pop artists were covered and their artworks were grouped according to theme. Pop artists paint consumer goods and from popular media as well, whereby objects from everyday life and popular individuals gain the status of art icons. Pop artists introduced the greatest number of new icons into the iconography of contemporary art, but also contributed to the demolition of the last remnants of iconographic hierarchy, giving a Coca-Cola bottle the same thematic value that once belonged to the human figure. Pop art themes are positive and giddy, but often with a covert critique of contemporary society. Pop art accepted advertising and illustrative conventions as a part of the commercial background and introduced them into art. In this way, commercials, comics, newspaper illustrations, food and clothing, movie stars, pin-up girls, cars, highways, gas stations and money itself became art. Pop art themes are related to everything that is popular. They cover almost all aspects of modern life and can generally be classified into thematic units such as modern American myths and icons, erotica, mass culture – mass media, comics, music, fashion and graffiti, consumer culture, words, symbols and signs, real ambiences, masterpieces of art history and the artist as an icon

Per hour is an artwork that examines dominant monopolies that Western fashion brands, specifically ones dealing in fast fashion (H&M, Topshop, Forever21 and Zara), have on Asian developing countries as well as poor working conditions and low wages enforced on workers in their factories. The titular piece also explores the deeper implications that come from the supremacy held by Western fashion brands, such as the dominance of capitalism, the influence of globalism and the suppression of certain cultural identities, the contrast between the way clothing is displayed in stores and its inhumane origins, the physical and human presence that clothing contains as it travels from one continent to another, the eradication of the local textile and fashion industry and the ambivalence of most consumers in relation to the aforementioned problems. Each item of clothing used in this piece has statistics written on it showing hourly wage of the average worker in the country where the item was produced and this information is printed using the kitsch technique of bedazzling, thus humorously transforming the clothing from the subject of coverage to the subject of exposure. All selected items are in the colors of human skin, which indicates the human presence behind the product and no item has any cultural symbol, which indicates the suppression of cultural identity. Clothing is arranged in a way that mimics the manner of its display in fashion stores, including exhibition furniture, thus treating the observers as a part of the work (as actors playing consumer roles) and using bent and folded clothing as a reflection of the workers and their desperate situation. In the end, the piece concludes that remnants of the colonial experience are still present in aspects of modern capitalism and globalism and that these systems add to the suppression of the cultural identity of Asian developing countries and to the disparity between rich and poor countries. Another conclusion that the work comes to is that the ambivalence of Western consumers towards such problems and their will, and even the pleasure of continuing to participate in such a system, despite some of them being aware of where their clothes come from, also contributes to the disparity between developed and underdeveloped countries and the poor working conditions that workers are forced to suffer, as for many of them there is no other choice

Antonín Dvořák: Elements of Nationalism in Classical Music

    No full text
In this Master's thesis I conducted the research to find the connection between politics and arts – music in the period of national awakening; I highlighted the importance of music in that background and referred to one of the composers who is considered to be the first Czech composer to achieve worldwide recognition by composing music with national elements - Antonín Leopold Dvořák. I chose this subject to better understand the piece that I will perform at my Master's graduation concert – Concert for Violin and Orchestra in A – minor, Op. 53. The methods I used are: studying the literature, listening to the pieces from that theme field and playing the concert. Recognizing causal link in issuing the piece of that specific period helped me in my interpretation of the violin concerto I previously mentioned. Dvořák’s works represented an entirely new historical situation: he raised the cultural value of his nation to the European level and exported it worldwide. His musical legacy is one of the bastions of European cultural heritage
