Well-being of Polish university students after the first year of the coronavirus pandemic : the role of core self-evaluations, social support and fear of COVID-19
Background
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic represents an unprecedented situation in the most recent history. It has had a number of negative consequences for individuals and for whole societies. Individual effects of the pandemic include not only loss of life and of physical health, but also deteriorated quality of life.
Objective
This study examines the effect of core self-evaluations (CSE), social support and fear of COVID-19 on the well-being of university students in Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods
We conducted an online survey on a nationwide group of 1,000 students of Polish universities. The survey was carried out between 1 and 15 March 2021. The respondents filled out the following set of tools: World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale, Core Self-Evaluations Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and The Fear of COVID-19 Scale.
Results
The findings showed that core self-evaluations (CSE) were significantly positively associated with well-being in each of the four domains studied: physical health (r = 0.519), psychological (r = 0.763), social relationships (r = 0.465) and environment (r = 0.496). Similarly, social support correlated positively with physical health (r = 0.277), psychological health (r = 0.306), social relationships (r = 0.552) and environment (r = 0.496). Fear of COVID-19 correlated negatively with well-being in the domain of physical health (r = 0.188), in social relationships (r = 0.042) and with regard to the environment (r = 0.071), the correlations were weak. However, the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and well-being in the psychological domain was not confirmed.
Conclusion
The findings point to the significant role of CSE and the role of social support in the perceived quality of life of young people during the pandemic. They provide valuable data concerning individuals who are particularly vulnerable to the adverse psychological effects at the time of the pandemic. They also prove that research conducted to explore other factors protecting individual well-being in difficult situations, including that of the pandemic, should be continued
Classification tree to analyze factors connected with post operative complications of cataract surgery in a teaching hospital
Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming ever more frequently applied in
medicine and, consequently, also in ophthalmology to improve both the quality of work for physicians
and the quality of care for patients. The aim of this study is to use AI, in particular classification tree,
for the evaluation of both ocular and systemic features involved in the onset of complications due
to cataract surgery in a teaching hospital. Methods: The charts of 1392 eyes of 1392 patients, with a
mean age of 71.3 8.2 years old, were reviewed to collect the ocular and systemic data before, during
and after cataract surgery, including post-operative complications. All these data were processed by
a classification tree algorithm, producing more than 260 million simulations, aiming to develop a
predictive model. Results: Postoperative complications were observed in 168 patients. According to
the AI analysis, the pre-operative characteristics involved in the insurgence of complications were:
ocular comorbidities, lower visual acuity, higher astigmatism and intra-operative complications.
Conclusions: Artificial intelligence application may be an interesting tool in the physician’s hands
to develop customized algorithms that can, in advance, define the post-operative complication risk.
This may help in improving both the quality and the outcomes of the surgery as well as in preventing
patient dissatisfaction
Neural Network Used for the Fusion of Predictions Obtained by the K-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm Based on Independent Data Sources
The article concerns the problem of classification based on independent data sets-local decision tables. The aim of the paper is to propose a classification model for dispersed data using a modified k-nearest neighbors algorithm and a neural network. A neural network, more specifically a multilayer perceptron, is used to combine the prediction results obtained based on local tables. Prediction results are stored in the measurement level and generated using a modified k-nearest neighbors algorithm. The task of neural networks is to combine these results and provide a common prediction. In the article various structures of neural networks (different number of neurons in the hidden layer) are studied and the results are compared with the results generated by other fusion methods, such as the majority voting, the Borda count method, the sum rule, the method that is based on decision templates and the method that is based on theory of evidence. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the neural network always generates unambiguous decisions, which is a great advantage as most of the other fusion methods generate ties. Moreover, if only unambiguous results were considered, the use of a neural network gives much better results than other fusion methods. If we allow ambiguity, some fusion methods are slightly better, but it is the result of this fact that it is possible to generate few decisions for the test object
Investigation of micromechanical properties and tribological behavior of WE43 magnesium alloy after deep cryogenic treatment combined with precipitation hardening
This study investigated the micromechanical and tribological properties of WE43 alloy (Mg-Y-Nd-Zr) alloy subjected to cryogenic treatment and precipitation hardening. Microindentation tests were carried out in the range of load from 100 to 1000 mN. The introduction of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) was shown to increase hardness and Young’s modulus, and reduce the total indentation work. As the load set during the tests increased, a gradual decrease in the measured values was observed, indicating a significant relationship between the indent size and the value of the measured parameters. Cryogenic treatment used in conjunction with precipitation hardening (after solutioning and after aging) reduces the tribological wear of the alloy. Tests have shown an almost twofold reduction in the area of the wear trace and in the volumetric wear of the alloy, as well as a more than twofold reduction in linear wear, with relatively small fluctuations in the coefficient of
friction. Abrasion was the main mechanism of wear. Areas where microcutting, adhesion and plastic deformation occurred were also observed. The results indicate the significant effectiveness of the applied heat treatment in improving the service life of the WE43 alloy containing rare earth metals

The article is about the names of the mountain tops and their ranges occurring
in the vast area of the Carpathian arch, with particular emphasis on the Polish
part of the Carpathians. This work is focused on the analysis of oronyms motivated
by common names of Romanian origin and retaining different degrees
of variability understood as heterogeneous grammatical-structural realisations
of lexemes motivating selected groups of oronyms. The meanings of motivating
words of foreign origin are discussed and the classification of the analysed
proper names is made based on grammatical and structural criteria. The classification
has made it possible to identify mountain name variants characteristic
for the examined group of names
Interlayer Microstructure Analysis of the Transition Zone in the Silicon/Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell
The aim of the paper was to determine the morphology of the layers and the microstructure
of the transition zone present in the proposed tandem solar structure. The bottom-silicon solar
cell plays a double role: first as a highly porous non-reflecting material, and second as a scaffold
for top-perovskite cell. In the presented solution, the use of a porous layer made of (e.g., TiO2) is
excluded in favor of chemically etched wires on the silicon surface. The porous layer of silicon
consists of nano- and microwires etched with metal assisted etching (MAE). The perovskite layer is
introduced by a two-step chemical method into the spaces between the wires to fully fill them and
intentionally form an additional capping layer at the same time. To examine the structure made in
this way, advanced microscopic methods were used including scanning electron microscopy (SEM),
transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM),
also in high resolution
Zapiski diarystyczne Poliny Żerebcowej jako forma protestu
This article is an attempt to analyze Polina Zherebtsova’s artistic and socio-political
activity as a form of protest. In her diary, which covered a decade, we can observe
the author’s accelerated maturation (the first notes, drawings and poems are by a girl
of less than nine years, the last ones by a nineteen-year-old). Along with this maturation,
enforced by the circumstances of war, in the diaries we can observe changes
in her perception of reality. Zherebtsova remains focused on her personal problems:
chiefly on the worsening conflict with her mother, whose symptoms of the post-
-traumatic stress disorder are becoming more and more visible and whose condition
translates into hostility towards her daughter and her notes, resulting in verbal and
physical violence and emotional blackmail. Over time, Zherebtsova’s diary becomes
more and more clearly an indictment of the participants in the Russian-Chechen
conflict, containing details inconvenient for many people. These details confirm that
Chechnya, once a republic where before the war representatives of different nations
and faiths lived in peaceful coexistence, has become an arena for barbaric acts of terror,
hatred, rape, torture, and corruption, with life depraved and with customs and
norms replaced by savagery. Zherebtsova’s diary confirms that the greatest victims of
the conflict are the civilians of Chechnya, deprived of material aid and spiritual support.
It also draws attention to the nightmarish existence of refugees, often physically
and psychologically maimed, who, alone and often unsuccessfully, fight for the right
to compensation and a dignified life in the post-war reality
The ethnographic atlases of Poland : Prolegomena
One of the ways in which various manifestations of traditional culture on vast territories can
be studied and presented is showing them on maps and, subsequently, interpreting the presented
scopes. The elaboration of an ethnographic map has certain requirements already at the
stage of creating the questionnaire and field studies. The set of such requirements (including
the taxonomy and chronology of the mapped elements of culture) is called a cartographic technique.
The familiarization with this technique enables one to estimate the usefulness of maps
for further research and for processing their contents. It can also help researchers who undertake
the effort of preparing new maps. The ethnogeographic method makes it possible to draw
conclusions concerning the origin of cultural features/elements on the basis of the configuration
of their scopes. The interpretation of maps lead ethnologists both to the explanation how
traditional culture originated and to the fact of Poland’s belonging to West-European cultural
province and of its borderlands with North-Eastern and Carpathian provinces. In the territories
of Poland, traditional culture has been reflected in several atlases – Atlas der deutschen

John Lydgate’s „Guy of Warwick” and fifteenth-century emotions
The article argues that John Lydgate’s Guy of Warwick is an innovative version of the Guy of Warwick legend as it emphasizes the feelings of its characters. Furthermore, it also openly intends to evoke emotions in its audience. The poem requires to be read in light of the newly emerged field of the history of medieval emotions since the social context of Lydgate’s Guy is more visible from this perspective. The poem offers an admixture of religious and secular feelings. As a result, the final scenes of bidding farewell to Guy by Felice and by the community have to be seen as related both to Guy as a hero and as a saint
Genome Characteristics Reveal the Biocontrol Potential of Actinobacteria Isolated From Sugarcane Rhizosphere
To understand the beneficial interaction of sugarcane rhizosphere actinobacteria in
promoting plant growth and managing plant diseases, this study investigated the
potential role of sugarcane rhizospheric actinobacteria in promoting plant growth and
antagonizing plant pathogens. We isolated 58 actinobacteria from the sugarcane
rhizosphere, conducted plant growth-promoting (PGP) characteristics research, and
tested the pathogenic fungi in vitro. Results showed that BTU6 (Streptomyces
griseorubiginosus), the most representative strain, regulates plant defense enzyme
activity and significantly enhances sugarcane smut resistance by regulating stress
resistance-related enzyme (substances (POD, PAL, PPO, TP) in sugarcane) activity in
sugarcane. The genomic evaluation indicated that BTU6 has the ability to biosynthesize
chitinase, b-1,3-glucanase, and various secondary metabolites and plays an essential
role in the growth of sugarcane plants under biotic stress. Potential mechanisms of
the strain in improving the disease resistance of sugarcane plants and its potential
in biodegrading exogenous chemicals were also revealed. This study showed the
