A copper alloy light cannon from Grodno: an example of early firearms from Eastern Europe
Get PDFThe paper discusses a recent find of a copper alloy light cannon discovered at the Old Castle in Grodno, Belarus. The research aim was to analyse the artefact in all its possible aspects, including archaeological and historical contexts, possible analogies, and the gun’s technology of manufacture. This latter was done against a broad comparative background of what is known on manufacturing technologies of late medieval and modern period copper alloy firearms. First, the archaeological and historical contexts of the discovery are dealt with. Then, the morphology and typochronology of the cannon are discussed and relevant analogies are proposed. Next, the technology of manufacture of the cannon is studied on the basis of metallographic examinations and EDS analyses of the metal’s elemental composition. It was found out that the artefact had been made of leaded copper. The cannon can be dated with reasonable certainty to the late 14th c., as implied both by the find context, the morphology and the chemical composition of the artefact. Its deposition can be related to fights over the Old Castle in Grodno in this period, waged by Teutonic, Polish and Lithuanian forces. It can tentatively be proposed that the cannon was manufactured in a Teutonic Order’s workshop, but further research is necessary to verify this supposition
The Structure-Properties-Cytotoxicity Interplay: A Crucial Pathway to Determining Graphene Oxide Biocompatibility
Get PDFInterest in graphene oxide nature and potential applications (especially nanocarriers) has resulted in numerous studies, but the results do not lead to clear conclusions. In this paper, graphene oxide is obtained by multiple synthesis methods and generally characterized. The mechanism of GO interaction with the organism is hard to summarize due to its high chemical activity and variability during the synthesis process and in biological buffers’ environments. When assessing the biocompatibility of GO, it is necessary to take into account many factors derived from nanoparticles (structure, morphology, chemical composition) and the organism (species, defense mechanisms,
adaptation). This research aims to determine and compare the in vivo toxicity potential of GO samples from various manufacturers. Each GO sample is analyzed in two concentrations and applied with food. The physiological reactions of an easy model Acheta domesticus (cell viability, apoptosis, oxidative defense, DNA damage) during ten-day lasting exposure were observed. This study emphasizes the variability of the GO nature and complements the biocompatibility aspect, especially in the context of various GO-based experimental models. Changes in the cell biomarkers are discussed in light of detailed physicochemical analysis
Geometric speed limit of neutrino oscillation
Get PDFWe investigate geometric quantum speed limit of neutrino oscillations in a presence
of matter and CP-violation. We show that periodicity in the speed limit present in
an unperturbed system becomes damped by interaction with a normal matter and
decoherence. We also show that (hypothetical) CP-violation causes enhancement of
periodicity and increases amplitude of an oscillating quantum speed limit and can
quantify CP-violation

teoretycznej i praktycznej. Zatem oprócz przypomnienia specyficznych cech epoki, w jakiej
żył oraz tworzył ten wyjątkowy w dziejach narodu polskiego intelektualista, a także zaprezentowania zwięźle zarówno kroniki, jak i faktów biograficznych, niniejszy artykuł stanowi propozycję
udzielenia odpowiedzi na kilka pytań: jak Wincenty Kadłubek postrzega roztropność, rozsądek
i rozwagę? Jak ujmuje „rodowód”/genezę ludzkiej roztropności, rozsądku i rozwagi? Jakie
znaczenie przypisuje kronikarz uosabianiu roztropności, rozsądku i rozwagi? Jakie warunki
osiągnięcia roztropności podaje? Jakie czynniki stanowią, w jego przekonaniu, ich przeciwieństwa
i przeszkody? Jakie przekazuje wskazówki odnośnie do przezwyciężania tych przeszkód,
a także do wychowawczego kształtowania roztropności, rozsądku i rozwagi? Autorka podjęła się
hermeneutycznej interpretacji mniej znanej części dorobku Kadłubka w przekonaniu, że analizowane

Automatic mobile warning system against people with elevated body temperature
Get PDFThe paper proposes a system that allows for the automatic detection of people with elevated body temperature and estimates distance from them using a smartphone-type device and a single mobile thermal camera. The algorithm automatically finds and selects humans with the highest temperature, and tracks changes in their position in an image sequence. On the basis of the change in the position of the human head in the image, in subsequent frames, the algorithm estimates the distance between camera and human. Owing to the use of fast machine-learning methods, the proposed system can immediately alert the user about the presence of a people with an elevated temperature at a distance of 1–3 m as soon as it appears in the field of view of the camera. The effectiveness of the algorithm was assessed as the ratio of correct distance classifications in the test image set to the total number of test images. Values ranging from 73% to 100% were obtained for
over 4000 images of humans at different distances. The proposed method allows for the quick and completely automatic warning aboutt people with elevated temperature, and can be used in popular Android mobile devices
Tracing Pre-Mesozoic Tectonic Sutures in the Crystalline Basement of the Protocarpathians : evidence from the Exotic Blocks from Subsilesian Nappe, Outer Western Carpathians, Poland
Get PDFPre-Mesozoic exotic crystalline blocks within the Outer Carpathian flysch have potential to unravel the nature of their eroded basement source(s) and to reconstruct the Paleozoic–Precambrian history of the rotocarpathians. Strongly tectonized Campanian–Maastrichtian grey marls in the Subsilesian Nappe of the OuterWestern Carpathians in Poland contain a variety of different lithology types, including granitoids and andesites. Petrological investigations coupled with zircon and apatite U-Pb dating were performed on crystalline (subvolcanic) exotic blocks from a locality in the Subsilesian Nappe. U-Pb zircon dating yields magmatic crystallization ages of c. 293 Ma for the microgranitoid and c. 310 Ma for the andesite block, with inherited zircon cores yielding Archean, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic and Cadomian ages. Whole rock trace element and Nd isotope data imply that the melt source was composed of a significant Neoproterozoic crustal component in both the microgranite and andesite. The Late Carboniferous–Permian magmatic activity likely
continues outside the Carpathian Belt and can be linked to a Late Paleozoic transtensional zone, which is a continuation of the Lubliniec–Kraków Zone that extends under the Carpathians to Moesia. This Late Paleozoic transtensional zone was probably reactivated during the Late Cretaceous under a transpressional regime within the Z˙ egocina tectonic zone, which caused the uplift of the Subsilesian Ridge and intensive erosion
The reality of informed consent: empirical studies on patient comprehension : systematic review
Get PDFBackground: Informed consent is a basic concept of contemporary, autonomy-based medical practice and
facilitates a shared decision-making model for relations between physicians and patients. Thus, the extent to which patients can comprehend the consent they grant is essential to the ethical viability of medicine as it is pursued today. However, research on patients’ comprehension of an informed consent’s basic components shows that their level of understanding is limited. Methods: Systemic searches of the PubMed and Web of Science databases were performed to identify the literature on informed consent, specifically patients’ comprehension of specific informed consent components. Results: In total, 14 relevant articles were retrieved. In most studies, few clinical trial participants correctly responded to items that examined their awareness of what they consented to. Participants demonstrated the highest level of understanding (over 50%) regarding voluntary participation, blinding (excluding knowledge about investigators’ blinding), and freedom to withdraw at any time. Only a small minority of patients demonstrated comprehension of placebo concepts, randomisation, safety issues, risks, and side effects. Conclusions: We found that participants’ comprehension of fundamental informed consent components was low, which is worrisome because this lack of understanding undermines an ethical pillar of contemporary clinical trial practice and questions the viability of patients’ full and genuine involvement in a shared medical decision-making process
The effect of medium-term sauna-based heat acclimation (MPHA) on thermophysiological and plasma volume responses to exercise performed under temperate conditionsin elite cross-country skiers
Get PDFThe influence of a series of ten sauna baths (MPHA) on thermophysiological and selected
hematological responses in 14 elite cross-country skiers to a submaximal endurance exercise test
performed under thermoneutral environmental conditions was studied. Thermal and physiological
variables were measured before and after the exercise test, whereas selected hematological indices
were studied before, immediately after, and during recovery after a run, before (T1) and after sauna
baths (T2). MPHA did not influence the baseline internal, body, and skin temperatures. There was
a decrease in the resting heart rate (HR: p = 0.001) and physiological strain (PSI: p = 0.052) after
MPHA and a significant effect of MPHA on systolic blood pressure (p = 0.03), hematological indices,
and an exercise effect but no combined effect of treatments and exercise on the tested variables. A
positive correlation was reported between PSI and total protein (%DTP) in T2 and a negative between
plasma volume (%DPV) and mean red cellular volume (%DMCV) in T1 and T2 in response to exercise
and a positive one during recovery. This may suggest that MPHA has a weak influence on body
temperatures but causes a moderate decrease in PSI and modifications of plasma volume restoration
in response to exercise under temperate conditions in elite athletes

i osiemdziesiąte XX wieku, kiedy odrzucono ideologie asymilacyjne, a wcześniej zakwestionowano
poglądy rasistowskie. Wówczas państwa o imigracyjnym rodowodzie
– Kanada i Australia – przyjęły oficjalne założenia społeczeństwa wielokulturowego. Po
1945 roku nasilały się ruchy migracyjne w Europie Zachodniej, gdzie podjęto decyzje
o wprowadzeniu różnych polityk związanych z wielokulturowością – multikulturalizm,
co zapewnia grupom o odmiennym systemie kulturowym równość, poszanowanie tożsamości
i uznanie jednostek oraz grup. Możemy wskazać dwa modele multikulturalizmu
europejskiego: Francja, gdzie przyjęto idee republikańskie preferujące uniwersalizm, czyli
ustawowe zniesienie różnic religijnych czy kulturowych w przestrzeni publicznej; oraz
model wielokulturowy – Holandia – dopuszcza różnorodność, ale w ramach obowiązującego
systemu prawnego i z hegemonią jednej kultury

Refleksje skoncentrowane są na opinii Ernsta Haftera, która przyczyniła się do dekryminalizacji dobrowolnych zachowań seksualnych pomiędzy dorosłymi osobami tej samej płci w Szwajcarii, już w 1929 r. Rozważania wzbogaca pokazanie ewolucji podejścia prawodawcy niemieckiego i austriackiego do tego zagadnienia. W artykule odwołano się do ustaleń zaczerpniętych z antropologii prawa i socjologii prawa.
