    Anomalous transport in driven periodic systems: distribution of the absolute negative mobility effect in the parameter space

    Absolute negative mobility is one of the most paradoxical forms of anomalous transport behaviour. At the first glance it contradicts the superposition principle and the second law of thermodynamics, however, its fascinating nature bridges nonlinearity and nonequilibrium in which these fundamental rules are no longer valid.We consider a paradigmatic model of the nonlinear Brownian motion in a driven periodic system which exhibits the absolute negative mobility. So far research on this anomalous transport feature has been limited mostly to the single case studies due to the fact that this model possesses the complex multidimensional parameter space. In contrast, here we harvest GPU supercomputers to analyze the distribution of negative mobility in the parameter space. We consider nearly 109 parameter regimes to discuss how the emergence of negative mobility depends on the system parameters as well as provide the optimal ones for which it occurs most frequently

    Petrochronological Evidence for a Three-Stage Magmatic Evolution of the Youngest Nepheline Syenites from the Ditrau Alkaline Massif, Romania

    The Ditr«u Alkaline Massif (DAM) is an igneous massif in the Eastern Carpathian Moun-tains of Romania. Numerous geochronological and geochemical studies have proposed a long formation history (ca. 70 m.y.) of the DAM from Middle Triassic to Cretaceous times, which is hardly reconcilable with geochemical evolutionary models and the geotectonic environment during the Mesozoic in this part of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains. In order to put tighter age constraints on the igneous processes forming the DAM, two nepheline syenites from the so-called Ghidut¸ and L«zarea suites were investigated. Based on field and geochemical evidence, the two rock suites represent the younger part of the DAM intrusives. Detailed zircon characterization, in situ zircon SIMS U-Pb dating, and geochemical modelling were used to establish the timing of zircon crystallization and thus to set time constraints on the igneous formation of these parts of the DAM. The intrusion of the dated Ghidut¸ suite sample took place at 232 ± 1 Ma in the Karnium, whereas the L«zarea suite nepheline syenite sample was intruded at 225 ± 1 Ma in the Norium. Together with published geochemical and geochronological data, three different magmatic events can thus be identified: Ghidut¸ suite at 231.1 ± 0.8 Ma, Ditr«u suite at 230.7 ± 0.2 Ma, and L«zarea suite at 224.9 ± 1.1 Ma. Although the ages of the events 1 and 2 are statistically indistinguishable, the combination of geochemical and petrochronological data certainly favor independent intrusion events. Thus, the igneous events forming the younger parts of the DAM encompassed a time span of ca. 13 m.y. Additionally, each igneous event can tentatively be divided in an older syenitic stage and a younger nepheline syenitic one, each with an age difference of some 100,000 years. No indication of any post 215 Ma igneous or hydrothermal activity was found. The new data and interpretation significantly improve our understanding of the temporal and geochemical evolution of the DAM and of alkaline complexes as such, demonstrating that the underlying igneous processes (melt generation, assimilation, fractionation, and the duration of plumbing systems) work on the same time scale for both sorts of magmatic rock suites

    From the "rally 'round the flag" effect to a social crisis of confidence : Poland and Slovakia in the first year of the covid-19 pandemic

    The pandemic COVID-19 became a challenge for both societies and governments. While most countries and citizens reacted similarly to the unknown strength of the virus at the start of the pandemic, the situation in each country began to vary more and more each month. Poland and Slovakia are interesting cases in this context. One year after the WHO declared a pandemic, these countries are experiencing one of the worst crises in history. In Poland, despite the initial social mobilisation, after a very short time, many government decisions ceased to be perceived as protecting citizens. In the first period of the pandemic, the Slovak government coped with the situation much better, which changed significantly in the autumn of 2020. The article aims to analyse how an active “rally 'round the flag” effect and the resulting natural potential for social mobilisation to fight the pandemic were wasted in Poland and Slovakia due to irresponsible political decisions undermining the citizens 'trust in the governments' good intentions

    Diels-Alder cycloaddition with CO, CO2, SO2, or N2 extrusion : a powerful tool for material chemistry

    Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials’ properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero) aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels–Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extrusion of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, or sulphur dioxide. When pyranones, dioxothiophenes, or cyclopentadienones and DA cycloaddition are aided with acetylenes including masked ones, conjugated or isolated diynes, or polyynes and arynes, aromatic systems are obtained. This review covers the development and the current state of knowledge regarding thermal DA cycloaddition of dienes mentioned above and dienophiles leading to (hetero)aromatics via CO, CO2, or SO2 extrusion. Particular attention was paid to the role that introduced aromatic moieties play in designing molecular structures with expected properties. Undoubtedly, the DAC variants described in this review, combined with other modern synthetic tools, constitute a convenient and efficient way of obtaining functionalized nanomaterials, continually showing the potential to impact materials sciences and new technologies in the nearest future

    Investigation of the TeO2/GeO2 Ratio on the Spectroscopic Properties of Eu3+-Doped Oxide Glasses for Optical Fiber Application

    This study presented an analysis of the TeO2/GeO2 molar ratio in an oxide glass system. A family of melt-quenched glasses with the range of 0–35 mol% of GeO2 has been characterized by using DSC, Raman, MIR, refractive index, PLE, PL spectra, and time-resolved spectral measurements. The increase in the content of germanium oxide caused an increase in the transition temperature but a decrease in the refractive index. The photoluminescence spectra of europium ions were examined under the excitation of 465 nm, corresponding to 7F0 → 5D2 transition. The PSB (phonon sidebands) analysis was carried out to determine the phonon energy of the glass hosts. It was reported that the red (5D0 → 7F2) to orange (5D0 → 7F1) fluorescence intensity ratio for Eu3+ ions decreased from 4.49 (Te0Ge) to 3.33 (Te15Ge) and showed a constant increase from 4.58 (Te20Ge) to 4.88 (Te35Ge). These optical features were explained in structural studies, especially changes in the coordination of [4]Ge to [6]Ge. The most extended lifetime was reported for the Eu3+ doped glass with the highest content of GeO2. This glass was successfully used for the drawing of optical fiber

BoggioChanging collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated selfreported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics

    Interpersonal Competences and Attitude to Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) among Future Pedagogues and Educators - A Polish and Portuguese Perspective

    Interpersonal competences in relationship building, collaboration and teamwork are essential both in F2F education and in distance or hybrid styles of education. In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as previous trends, some or all of the higher education didactics were transferred to the online environment. In this context, the Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) model, now known as collaborativism, is gaining importance. This research aims to diagnose and compare the level of interpersonal competences and attitude in the OCL model among students preparing for the profession of an educator, pedagogue or teacher in the autonomous region of Madeira and in Poland. Quantitative studies were conducted using the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire by D. Buhrmester,W. Furman, M.T.Wittenberg and H.T. Reis—as adapted by Poland and Portugal. In addition, the respondents expressed their views on OCL in the self-written questionnaire. According to the research findings, the highest level of competence in the Portuguese group was achieved by the respondents in terms of: Emotional Support (EW), Conflict Management and Resolution (RK) and Negative Assertion—Asserting Influence (AO). In the Polish group, EW was the lowest. The highest level of interpersonal competences was observed for Conflict Management and Resolution (RK), Disclosure (US) and Initiation (IR). The largest group of the surveyed students in both countries expressed a positive attitude towards implementing OCL in their courses of study and declared their willingness to be a member of a group that learns online together

    Characteristics of the natural radioactivity of the underground laboratories in the Baltic Sea Region participating in the BSUIN and EUL projects

    Underground laboratories (ULs) offer more and more opportunities for their usage. Still, one of the most critical parameters describing ULs is their natural radioactivity. Therefore, the article compares the six ULs of the BSUIN (Baltic Sea Underground Innovation Network) and EUL (Empowering Underground Laboratories Network Usage) projects regarding their natural radioactivity. Measurements include in situ and laboratory analysis of the collected rock and water samples, using various nuclear spectrometry techniques. The lowest level of natural radioactivity characterizes salt deposit is in the Conceptual Lab development coordinated by KGHM Cuprum R&D centre

    Spin–orbit coupling in buckled monolayer nitrogene

    Buckled monolayer nitrogene has been recently predicted to be stable above the room temperature. The low atomic number of nitrogen atom suggests, that spin–orbit coupling in nitrogene is weak, similar to graphene or silicene. We employ first principles calculations and perform a systematic study of the intrinsic and extrinsic spin–orbit coupling in this material. We calculate the spin mixing parameter b 2 , reflecting the strength of the intrinsic spin–orbit coupling and find, that b 2 is relatively small, on the order of 10 −6 . It also displays a weak anisotropy, opposite for electrons and holes. To study extrinsic effects of spin–orbit coupling we apply a transverse electric field enabling spin–orbit fields . We find, that are on the order of a single μ eV in the valence band, and tens to a hundred of μ eV in the conduction band, depending on the applied electric field. Similar to b 2 , is also anisotropic, in particular for the conduction electrons
