The effect of DC electric field on the elongation growth, proton extrusion and membrane potential of Zea mays L. coleoptile cells; a laboratory study
Background:In this study, we investigated the effect of an electric field, with an intensity similar to that of the Earth’s field, on plant cells growth. The molecular mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear. Results: It was found that the electric field, depending on the applied voltage, its duration and the polarization of the maize seedlings, stimulated or inhibited the growth of the seedling organs (root, mesocotyl and coleoptile). Moreover, it was also noticed that the gravitropic response of maize seedlings was inhibited at all voltages studied. Simultaneous measurements of growth and external medium pH show that auxin(IAA, indole-3-acetic acid)- and fusicoccin(FC)-induced elongation growth and proton extrusion of maize coleoptile segments were significantly inhibited at higher voltages. The ionic current flowing through the single coleoptile segment during voltage application was 1.7-fold lower in segments treated with cation channel blocker tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA-Cl) and 1.4-fold higher with IAA compared to the control. The electrophysiological experiments show that the electric field caused the depolarization of the membrane potential of parenchymal coleoptile cells, which was not reversible over 120 min. Conclusion: It is suggested that a DC electric field inhibits the plasma membrane H+ pump activity and K+ uptake through voltage-dependent, inwardly rectifying ZMK1 channels (Zea mays K+ channel 1). The data presented here are discussed, taking into account the “acid growth hypothesis” of the auxin action and the mechanism of gravitropic response induction
Krytyka poznania w marburskiej szkole neokantyzmu: Hermanna Cohena ujęcie Platońskiego idealizmu w perspektywie Kantowskiej logiki transcendentalnej
Artykuł jest próbą scharakteryzowania platońskiego idealizmu według wykładni Hermanna Cohena – filozofa w Polsce niemal zapomnianego; założyciela, a zarazem czołowego, obok Paula Natorpa i Władysława Tatarkiewicza, przedstawiciela marburskiej szkoły neokantyzmu. Hyperspectral vs. Multispectral data: Comparison of the spectral differentiation capabilities of Natura 2000 non-forest habitats
Identification of the Natura 2000 habitats using remote sensing techniques is one of the most important challenges of nature conservation. In this study, the potential for differentiating non-forest Natura 2000 habitats from the other habitats was examined using hyperspectral data in the scope of VNIR (0.4–1 µm), SWIR (1–2.5 µm) and simulated multispectral data (Sentinel-2). The aim of the research was also to determine the most informative spectral ranges from the optical range. Five different Natura 2000 habitats common in Central Europe were analysed: heaths (code 4030), mires (code 7140), grasslands (code 6230) and meadows (codes 6410 and 6510). In order to guarantee the objectivity and transferability of the results each habitat was tested in two areas and in three campaigns (spring, summer, autumn). Hyperspectral data was acquired using HySpex VNIR-1800 and SWIR-384 scanners. The Sentinel-2 data was resampled based on HySpex spectral reflectance. The overflights were performed simultaneously with ground reference data – habitats and background polygons. The Linear Discriminant Analysis was performed in iterative mode based on spectral reflectance acquired from hyperspectral and multispectral data. This resulted in distribution of correctness rate values and information about the most differentiating spectral bands for each habitat. Based on the results of our experiments we conclude that: (i) hyperspectral data (both VNIR and SWIR) obtained from May to September was useful for differentiation of habitats from background with efficiency reaching over 90%, regardless of the area; (ii) the most useful spectral ranges are: in VNIR − 0.416–0.442 µm and 0.502–0.522 µm, in SWIR − 1.117–1.165 µm and 1.290–1.361 µm; (iii) the potential of multispectral data (Sentinel-2) in distinguishing Natura 2000 habitats from the background is diverse; higher for heaths and mires (comparable to hyperspectral data) lower for meadows (6410, 6510) and grasslands (6230); (iv) in case of meadows and grasslands, the correctness rate for the Sentinel-2 data was on average about 20% lower compared to the hyperspectral data
Permafrost Base Degradation : Characteristics and Unknown Thread With Specific Example From Hornsund, Svalbard
Permafrost degradation is one of the most pressing issues in the modern cryosphere related to climate change. Most attention is paid to the degradation of the top of the active permafrost associated with contemporary climate. This is the most popular issue because in the subsurface part of it there is usually the greatest accumulation of ground ice in direct relation to the changes taking place. The melting of ground ice is the cause of the greatest changes related to subsidence and other mass-wasting processes. The degradation of the subsurface permafrost layer is also responsible for the increased emission of CO2 and methane. However, this is not a fully comprehensive look at the issue of permafrost degradation, because depending on its thickness, changes in its thermal properties may occur more or less intensively throughout its entire profile, also reaching the base of permafrost. These changes can degrade permafrost throughout its profile. The article presents the basic principles of permafrost degradation in its overall approach. Both the melting of the ground ice and the thermal degradation of permafrost, as manifested in an increase in its temperature in part or all of the permafrost profile, are discussed. However, special attention is paid to the degradation characteristics from the permafrost base. In the case of moderately thick and warm permafrost in the zone of its sporadic and discontinuous occurrence, this type of degradation may particularly contribute to its disappearance, and surficial consequences of such degradation may be more serious than we expect on the basis of available research and data now. A special case of such degradation is the permafrost located in the coastal zone in the vicinity of the Hornsund Spitsbergen, where a multidirectional thermal impact is noted, also causing similar degradation of permafrost: from the top, side and bottom. Especially the degradation of permafrost from the permafrost base upwards is an entirely new issue in considering the evolution of permafrost due to climate change. Due to the difficulties in its detection, this process may contribute to the threats that are difficult to estimate in the areas of discontinuous and sporadic permafrost

Its general approach to CRE detection does not involve any a priori considerations, and its search strategy encompasses both spatial and temporal correlations, on different scales. Here we search for time clustering of the cosmic ray events collected with a small sea-level extensive air shower array at the University of Adelaide. The array consists of seven one-square-metre scintillators enclosing an area of 10 m × 19 m. It has a threshold energy ~0.1 PeV, and records cosmic ray showers at a rate of ~6 mHz. We have examined event arrival times over a period of over 2.5 years in two equipment configurations (without and with GPS timing), recording ~300 k events and ~100 k events. We determined the event time spacing distributions between individual events and the distributions of time periods which contained specific numbers of multiple events. We find that the overall time distributions are as expected for random events. The distribution which was chosen a priori for particular study was for time periods covering five events (four spacings). Overall, these distributions fit closely with expectation, but there are two outliers of short burst periods in data for each configuration. One of these outliers contains eight events within 48 s. The physical characteristics of the array will be discussed together with the analysis procedure, including a comparison between the observed time distributions and expectation based on randomly arriving events

The Managing and Restoring of Degraded Land in Post-Mining Areas
Mining is an important branch of the economy, providing raw materials necessary
for the economic and civilization development of the country. It is difficult to imagine
how modern civilization would function without products obtained from raw materials
extracted through mining methods — without energy produced from burning fossil fuels,
without metal products obtained from ores, without roads or stone products made from
rock materials. As a raw material, sand is one of the most frequently used materials on
Earth, rich in mineral resources [1–3]. The extraction of energy, metallic, chemical, and
rock materials is, therefore, an indispensable part of the modern world. At the same time,
however, mining exploitation is associated with very strong interference in the natural
environment, and through it, also in human life [...]
i osadzonymi w nich podmiotami.
i średnich.
