Doubledifferential distributions were obtained in transversemomentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of K0 S was determined to be 0.162±0.001(stat.)±0.011(sys.). The results on K0 S production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data

    Pre-operative high-dose-rate brachytherapy in early-stage cervical cancer: long-term single-center results

Purpose: The aim of the study was to report the outcomes of pre-operative high-dose-rate brachytherapy (pHDRBT), followed by hysterectomy in patients with early cervical cancer. Material and methods: From January, 1998 to December, 2003, 113 women with IB1, IB2, and IIA1 cervical cancer (according to International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics [FIGO] 2018) were treated with pHDR-BT, and 6 to 8 weeks later followed by radical hysterectomy. Patients found to have positive lymph nodes, residual cervical cancer, involved parametria, or lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) received post-operative adjuvant therapy. Results: Post-operatively, 81.4% of patients had a complete response to pHDR-BT in the cervix, and 18.6% had residual cervical cancer. Failures occurred in 11/113 (9.7%) patients (all were stage IIA1), with pelvic recurrences in 5/113 (4.4%) and distant metastasis (DM) in 6/113 (5.3%). The 5- and 10-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 100% for IB1 and IB2, and 86.4% and 81.3% for IIA1, respectively. Lymph node involvement and/or residual cervical cancer correlated with worse DFS. Two vesicovaginal fistulas were observed (one in a patient treated only with pHDRBT and one in a woman, who underwent adjuvant external-beam radiotherapy [EBRT]). Two rectovaginal fistulas and one case of proctitis were observed in patients treated with adjuvant EBRT. Conclusions: pHDR-BT in early cervical cancer is well-tolerated and effective in sterilizing tumor cells in the cervix. The growing number of publications in this area may help define an optimal therapeutic scheme, but randomized trials are required to determine the best candidates for this treatment modality. In our opinion, cervical cancer patients with FIGO stage IIA1 are not good candidates for pHDR-BT, and could be given this treatment only after rigorous selection, including assessment with state-of-the-art imaging, due to higher probability of treatment failure

Precipitation Forecasting in Northern Bangladesh Using a Hybrid Machine Learning Model

Precipitation forecasting is essential for the assessment of several hydrological processes. This study shows that based on a machine learning approach, reliable models for precipitation prediction can be developed. The tropical monsoon-climate northern region of Bangladesh, including the Rangpur and Sylhet division, was chosen as the case study. Two machine learning algorithms were used: M5P and support vector regression. Moreover, a novel hybrid model based on the two algorithms was developed. The performance of prediction models was assessed by means of evaluation metrics and graphical representations. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out to assess the prediction accuracy as the number of exogenous inputs reduces and lag times increases. Overall, the hybrid model M5P-SVR led to the best predictions among used models in this study, with R2 values up to 0.87 and 0.92 for the stations of Rangpur and Sylhet, respectively

Continuities and Disruptions in Transhumance Practices in the Silesian Beskids (Poland): The Case of Koniaków Village

    No full text
"Transhumance is a phenomenon difficult to define, covering many different practices, which are shaped by ecology and culture. It is a variety of pastoralism, which is supplemented by land cultivation and trade. According to Schuyler Jones (2005), it includes: rural settlement, land cultivation, and periodic migration of people and animals between mountain pastures. In 2004, Piotr Kohut, a resident of Koniaków, managed to bring back to life a seemingly completely extinct institution of the pastoral community in the area of the Silesian Beskids—the so-called sałasz. Sałasz is a type of farming specific to the Carpathian area, which consists in setting up shepherding companies in which a few or more sheep owners join their flocks, placing them under the supervision of a baca (chief shepherd) who is responsible for grazing of animals and shares proportionally the benefits obtained from the milk. This communal grazing, which was associated with certain cultural behaviors and the way of life, was a key determinant of Carpathian pastoralism for many centuries, but economic and political factors disturbed its functioning. After many years of interruption, the sheep of local gazdas (owners, breeders) were merged together into one flock again, which was tended by a collectively elected baca—a head of the shepherding team—until the end of the pastoral season. This event can be considered as the actual beginning of shepherding restitution in the Cieszyn Silesia region." (fragm.

No nie mów! Słownik pragmatemów?! Rozważania nad leksykograficznym opisem wyrażeń pragmatycznych w ujęciu kontrastywnym (na przykładzie polskich ekwiwalentów francuskiego pragmatemu Tu m’en diras tant!

    No full text
This article deals with the lexicographic description of pragmatemes in a contrastive approach. In the first part, the author briefly reviews definitions of the denomination “pragmateme” in Polish and French-language linguistic literature, finally opting for a prototypical understanding of this term. The following chapters are devoted to presenting the concept of the projected multilingual dictionary of pragmatemes. Having outlined the main principles of the dictionary’s macro- and microstructure, the author proceeds to a detailed discussion of the dictionary entries for two Polish equivalents of the French pragmatic formula Tu m’en diras tant!: Co ty nie powiesz! and No nie mów!

Anxiety among pregnant women during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland

    No full text
Although anxiety is common because of the transitional nature of the perinatal period, particularly high levels of anxiety have been observed in some studies of pregnant women during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severity of anxiety among pregnant women during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland, and factors associated with it. Cross-sectional study with a total of 1050 pregnant women recruited via social media in Poland during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, from March 1 until June 1, 2020. The survey included validated psychological measures: the GAD-7 (anxiety), the PREPS (pandemic stress), with two subscales: preparedness and infection stress, and obstetric, sociodemographic and COVID-19 related variables. T-tests, ANOVAs, and hierarchical binary logistic regression for dichotomized GAD-7 scores (minimal or mild vs. moderate or severe) were used. Over a third of respondents experienced moderate or severe levels of anxiety. Predictors of moderate or severe anxiety were non-pandemic related factors like unplanned pregnancy and emotional and psychiatric problems, as well as pandemic related pregnancy stress. Levels of anxiety among pregnant women during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland exceeded pre-pandemic norms. Findings suggest that prior psychiatric conditions, unplanned pregnancy, and elevated pandemic-related pregnancy stress due to concerns about infection or poor preparation for birth contributed to the risk of high anxiety in Polish pregnant women during the pandemic onset. Given the harmful effects of antenatal anxiety on the health and well-being of mothers and their children, psychotherapeutic interventions, efforts to alleviate pregnant women’s stress, and training in adaptive ways to cope with stress are vital to reduce the prevalence of maternal anxiety and its potential consequences during this global crisis

Outer Membrane Vesicles as Mediators of Plant–Bacterial Interactions

    No full text
Plants have co-evolved with diverse microorganisms that have developed different mechanisms of direct and indirect interactions with their host. Recently, greater attention has been paid to a direct “message” delivery pathway from bacteria to plants, mediated by the outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). OMVs produced by Gram-negative bacteria play significant roles in multiple interactions with other bacteria within the same community, the environment, and colonized hosts. The combined forces of innovative technologies and experience in the area of plant–bacterial interactions have put pressure on a detailed examination of the OMVs composition, the routes of their delivery to plant cells, and their significance in pathogenesis, protection, and plant growth promotion. This review synthesizes the available knowledge on OMVs in the context of possible mechanisms of interactions between OMVs, bacteria, and plant cells. OMVs are considered to be potential stimulators of the plant immune system, holding potential for application in plant bioprotection

MicroCT tomography of the Middle Devonian crinoid genus Haplocrinites from Poland

    No full text
A specimen of the Middle Devonian crinoid genus Haplocrinites (WNoZ/S/4/224/1) was scanned with microtomography to better visualize its internal and external morphology. The scan was performed in 2022 in the Faculty X-ray Microtomography Laboratory at the Faculty of Computer Science and Material Science, University of Silesia in Katowice, Chorzów, Poland, using the General Electric Phoenix v|tome|x micro-CT equipment at 160 kV, 70 μA and scanning time of 20 min. Projection images were captured using a 1,000×2,024 pxs scintillator/CCD with an exposure time of 250 ms and processed using Volume Graphics® VGSTUDIO Max software and analysed using Volume Graphics® myVGL viewer.A rich collection of well-preserved Middle Devonian crinoid thecae from Holy Cross Mountains (Świętomarz locality, Poland) is described. They are attributed to the widely distributed inadunate crinoid genus Haplocrinites. Using a traditional classification these thecae should be assigned to two species (H. aremoricensis and H. boitardi). However, a wide range of morphologic variation suggests that this assemblage represents morphological variants of a single species. This is supported by morphometric analyses which revealed that these thecae are not clustered into two morphologically distinct groups. These data show that the number of haplocrinitid species is likely overestimated. Traditional classifications based on the cup shape and ornamentation are no longer tenable, and require substantial revision. The diagnosis of H. boitardi is emended to encompass a broader range of morphologic variation. H. aremoricensis is a junior synonym of H. boitardi.Narodowe Centrum Nauk

Characterization of Catechol-1,2-Dioxygenase (Acdo1p) From Blastobotrys raffinosifermentans and Investigation of Its Role in the Catabolism of Aromatic Compounds

    No full text
Gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, catechol, and pyrogallol are only a few examples of industrially relevant aromatics. Today much attention is paid to the development of new microbial factories for the environmentally friendly biosynthesis of industrially relevant chemicals with renewable resources or organic pollutants as the starting material. The non–conventional yeast, Blastobotrys raffinosifermentans, possesses attractive properties for industrial bio-production processes such as thermo- and osmotolerance. An additional advantage is its broad substrate spectrum, with tannins at the forefront. The present study is dedicated to the characterization of catechol-1,2-dioxygenase (Acdo1p) and the analysis of its function in B. raffinosifermentans tannic acid catabolism. Acdo1p is a dimeric protein with higher affinity for catechol (KM = 0.004 0.001 mM, kcat = 15.6 0.4 s1) than to pyrogallol (KM = 0.1 0.02 mM, kcat = 10.6 0.4 s1). It is an intradiol dioxygenase and its reaction product with catechol as the substrate is cis,cis-muconic acid. B. raffinosifermentans G1212/YIC102-AYNI1-ACDO1-6H, which expresses the ACDO1 gene under the control of the strong nitrate-inducible AYNI1 promoter, achieved a maximum catechol-1,2-dioxygenase activity of 280.6 U/L and 26.9 U/g of dry cell weight in yeast grown in minimal medium with nitrate as the nitrogen source and 1.5% glucose as the carbon source. In the same medium with glucose as the carbon source, catechol-1,2-dioxygenase activity was not detected for the control strain G1212/YIC102 with ACDO1 expression under the regulation of its respective endogenous promoter. Gene expression analysis showed that ACDO1 is induced by gallic acid and protocatechuic acid. In contrast to the wild-type strain, the B. raffinosifermentans strain with a deletion of the ACDO1 gene was unable to grow on medium supplemented with gallic acid or protocatechuic acid as the sole carbon source. In summary, we propose that due to its substrate specificity, its thermal stability, and its ability to undergo long-term storage without significant loss of activity, B. raffinosifermentans catechol-1,2-dioxygenase (Acdo1p) is a promising enzyme candidate for industrial applications
