    An intelligent traffic control system

Applied project submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022Traffic congestion has been a problem in Ghana for a while now. Unfortunately, the traffic control system in Ghana is inefficient at managing this issue. This is because it solely operates based on time intervals of 1 and a half to 2 minutes, which leads to an equal allocation of flow time. However, equality does not necessarily mean efficiency as some of the time allocated could be wasted because of the low number of vehicles at the junction. Therefore, this project proposes an intelligent traffic control system using an efficient algorithm. This project aims to use efficient algorithms and Artificial Intelligence to make real-time and dynamic decisions based on data gathered to ensure a more efficient and equitable traffic control management system. Traffic data such as the number of vehicles, prioritized vehicles like ambulances, etc. is gathered at every junction and real -time traffic flow decisions are made to drain the network of junctions based on the density of vehicles on each stretch of road.Ashesi Universit

Undergraduate thesis submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022In today's computing world, in-memory databases are increasingly being used to increase transactional throughput and cache query results in distributed systems. One component of in-memory databases that is crecial in determining their performance is their index structure. In 2013, Ohene-Kwofie, Otoo et al. proposed the O2-Tree, and the associated O2-Tree-KV as a index structure for main memory databases and an associated key-value store, respectively. Initial tests demonstrated that the O2-Tree was a promising structure. Still, results obtained from testing the performance of the O2-Tree-KV with leading NoSQL data stores were not as conclusive, as only a small set of alternative structures were employed during testing. In this study, we demonstrate, by way of experimentation, the viability of the O2-Tree as a comparative database index by testing its performance alongside other leading index structures. We achieve this by demonstrating that the O2-Tree is competitive in two critical domains of database index-structure comparison; the ability to build index structures quickly and thus recover from unexpected and sometimes inevitable crashes; the ability to execute query sets with varying update ratios at relatively fast speeds.Ashesi Universit

Applied project submitted to the Department of Business Administration, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, May 2022The primary goal of the project is to increase operational efficiency within Atala Limited and avoid discrepancies in stock takes by providing a system that allows for real-time data reconciliation. Atala Limited needs a system that provides real time data reconciliations to implement the values of integrity and efficiency, while monitoring and controlling stock and inventory levels across branches. Structured interviews and literature reviews were used as the means of data collection. The Deputy General Manager of Atala Limited and the staff who were dealing with their old system were involved in the data collection process. Open-ended questions were used in interviews to get insight into the organization and industry. After analyzing the data collected, it is recommended that the company incorporates the Tally Prime Software, Tally.net, as well as a policy document to improve the inventory control system that the company currently has. When these proposed solutions are implemented in the daily operations of the business, it would help to combat the issues surrounding inventory management control. Among the many features provided by Tally Prime which includes data reconciliation and synchronization as well as stock alerts, Atala Limited will also benefit from the ability to access data from any location, on any computer, at any time through Tally.net. We believe that this software will greatly improve the efficiency of inventory management at Atala Limited.Ashesi Universit

Applied project submitted to the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, Ashesi University, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, May 2022As modern healthcare progresses, hospitals have incorporated technology into their various services. Essentially, this has given multiples hospitals a competitive advantage over other industry players. They have implemented Electronic Health Record Systems that is used within their facilities to efficiently manage patient information. However, patients still have little to no access to their personal records. It is believed that a Personal Health Record System would improve the access and the quality of care provided to patients by allowing them to have direct access to their medical health records. This project proposes a mobile application that will digitize hospital cards and allow patients to maintain and manage their health information privately and securely.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022A prototype of an IoT based electric vehicle battery management system was designed to improve the health of cells in a battery pack of an electric vehicle. An IoT system was deployed to allow users and producers of these battery packs to view the status of the cells in the battery pack from the cloud. The design uses various resistor dividers to monitor the individual cells' voltages, current, and temperature. A passive balancing circuit is also implemented to ensure the individual cells charge and discharge at the same voltage level. The voltages, current and temperature of individual cells were monitored successfully. A database was designed to keep records of the individual batteries using phpMyAdmin, and the data was successfully displayed on the website.Ashesi Universit

Design and construction of smart three-way change over switch and microcontroller-based pure sine wave inverter with remote monitoring solution

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022Intermittent power outages have rendered most developing countries' national grids unreliable. Consumers have installed alternative energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines to combat this issue. Because of their nature, the output of these power sources must be converted to match the national grid's output. Additionally, consumers must be able to switch between these power sources when required quickly. Many inverter solutions have been developed and are readily available in the market. However, most affordable inverters produce a square wave, which is unsuitable for sensitive electronics; sine-wave inverters, on the other hand, are perfect for all appliances but are more expensive than square wave inverters. Furthermore, many switching solutions are available in the market to allow consumers to switch between power sources manually or automatically. These, however, can only switch between two power sources. This project has designed and developed a microcontroller-based pure sine wave inverter equipped with remote monitoring capabilities and a three-way intelligent changeover switch. The inverter converts 12V DC to a single-phase 230V AC at 50Hz pure sine wave. The three-way changeover utilizes a microcontroller to switch the power supply among three input power sources.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022In Ghana, kidnap cases are continually on the rise. Each day we hear cases of individuals of all ages going missing, with the local police forces claiming to solve most of these cases, yet the ratio of missing to discovered individuals is as high as ever. In Western countries, there are systems put in place to aid in the location of missing individuals. In Ghana however, the way in which this is done is by sharing information on the missing individuals on different social media platforms. This method of location is problematic as most individuals that go missing are not found for several years. In this project, a tracking device is designed and implemented to aid the families of missing individuals locate their loved ones. The results from this project identify that the location of a missing individual can be accurately determined with the aid of the tracking device. As such, the device can be used in conjunction with local police authorities in an effort to reduce the rate at which individuals go missing in the country.Ashesi Universit

Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2022More than 75,000 people in Ghanaian coastal areas rely on saltwater consumption, which has often caused dental damage and diseases such as cholera and bilharzia. The wells and boreholes in coastal areas supply water with high saline content because of underground seepage from the sea. The existing desalination technologies are expensive and unaffordable for coastal settlers. Solar energy costs have become relatively bearable in the past decade, and desalination means can be developed using low-cost resources with the excellent compromise to produce potable water effectively. This project uses a solar-powered desalination system to produce 100 litres of potable water per day.Ashesi Universit
