    Business internships for bachelor’s degrees at blended learning universities: A pilot study to assess the transition from hybrid studies to the workplace

    Enhancing the employability of new graduates is a growing demand for universities. The subject “Curricular Practices” (a business internship) in the undergraduate qualifications of management, economics, and business offers students the chance to experience on-site learning in the labour environment, which does not fit in a priori with blended and online teaching but, in contrast, can offer them a structured transition from the virtual classroom to a personal presence, as required in the workplace. The main objective of this research is to assess the interest in the professional boundary-crossing of university students of hybrid studies. This pilot study with students from bachelor’s degrees in management (business administration) and economics at one of the largest blended universities in Europe shows that students take on an active role in the learning process and professionally socialise through internships. Student become more involved. They acquire reflexive learning and increase their participation in different activities. Furthermore, internships give them a richer, more diversified (online and offline) and efficient education. This type of subject offers more opportunities than an exclusively virtual learning environment, generating positive synergies that improve the regulated transition process from a hybrid academic university environment to the workplace.     Optimization of mechanical properties of multiscale hybrid polymer nanocomposites: A combination of experimental and machine learning techniques

    Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer quick and accurate predictions of material properties at a low computational cost. In this project, the mechanical properties of multiscale poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB)-based nanocomposites reinforced with different concentrations of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), WS2 nanosheets and sepiolite (SEP) nanoclay have been predicted. The nanocomposites were prepared via solution casting. SEM images revealed that the three nanofillers were homogenously and randomly dispersed into the matrix. A synergistic reinforcement effect was attained, resulting in an unprecedented stiffness improvement of 132% upon addition of 1:2:2 wt% SEP:MWCNTs:WS2. Conversely, the increments in strength were only moderates (up to 13.4%). A beneficial effect in the matrix ductility was also found due to the presence of both nanofillers. Four ML approaches, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), RNN with Levenberg's algorithm (RNN-LV), decision tree (DT) and Random Forest (RF), were applied. The correlation coefficient (R2), mean absolute error (MAE) and mean square error (MSE) were used as statistical indicators to compare their performance. The developed models represent a powerful tool for the optimization of the mechanical properties in multiscale hybrid polymer nanocomposites, saving time and resources in the experimental characterization process

    Children’s perception of schadenfreude intensity in envy situations: The role of zero-sum reasoning and deservingness

    Descripción del proyecto Este estudio analiza si los niños de (5 a 11 años) atribuyen más envidia maliciosa (schadenfreude) o benigna cuando la situación es de ganancia o pérdida para el envidioso. Además estudiamos si la ventaja (ganada o perdida) se ha obtenido merecida o inmerecidamente. Además analizamos las justificaciones verbales de sus respuestas. Se trata de un diseño factorial mixto y se controla la edad y el sexo en todas las condiciones. Utilizamos viñetas para representar a los personajes en las diferentes condiciones experimentales. Los resultados obtenidos indican que cuando el envidioso obtiene una ganancia gracias a la pérdida de la ventaja del envidiado (razonamiento de suma cero) los niños atribuyen una intensidad más alta de schadenfreude (envidia maliciosa) mientras que cuando el envidioso no obtiene ninguna ganancia (hay igualdad entre ambos personajes) la envidia benigna aparece más frecuentemente y hay una disminución de la schadenfreude. En cuanto a la merecimiento de la ventaja, solo es considerada por los niños mayores y solo en la condición de pérdida.
