The database comprises the examination of the censors' reports on Graham Greene's early novels written before "Brighton Rock" (1938) and submitted to the Spanish censorship board in the 1940s i.e. The Man Within (1929), Rumour at Nightfall (1931), Stamboul Train (1932), It’s a Battlefield (1934), England Made Me (1935) and A Gun for Sale (1936). The Project "The Reception of English Fiction in Twentieth-century Spain: Editions, Criticism and Censorship" was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education under the 2007 programme of grants for research projects (Reference HUM2007-63296/FILO).The research team carried out a study on the reception of English and Irish narrative in Spain during the 20th century, paying special attention to the problems of censorship that arose during the Franco regime.</p

FirEUrisk_canopy_fuel_parameters: canopy fuel load, canopy bulk density

    No full text
Spatially explicit data on forest canopy fuel parameters provide critical information for wildfire propagation modelling, emission estimations and risk assessment. We used a multi-sensor approach integrating satellite Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) observations from the Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) sensor, with multi-spectral and SAR imagery and biophysical variables to provide spatially-explicit estimates of two key descriptors of crown fire behaviour – canopy fuel load (CFL) and canopy bulk density (CBD) – over the European territory at 1 km2 grid resolution. GEDI L1B and L2A level footprints were used to estimate Leaf Area Density, from which CFL and CBD were subsequently derived. We then extrapolated the estimates to European areas not covered by GEDI using machine learning models with multispectral (Landsat 8) and SAR (Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar sensor – PALSAR) imagery, and biophysical variables related with vegetation conditions, climate (temperature and humidity) and terrain conditions. Pixel-level uncertainty for the spatial extrapolation was also estimated. This dataset of these European canopy fuel parameters, at 1 km spatial resolution, encompasses a total of 4 maps including: forest canopy fuel load and canopy bulk density, along with their associated uncertainties. Further details about the generation of these maps can be read in: Aragoneses, E., García, M., Tang, H., and Chuvieco, E.: A multi-sensor approach allows confident mapping of forest canopy fuel load and canopy bulk density to assess wildfire risk at the European scale, Remote Sensing of Environment, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2024.114578, 2025. These maps complement the categorical information of the FirEUrisk European fuel type map for the forest fuel types in Aragoneses, E., García, M., Salis, M., Ribeiro, L. M., and Chuvieco, E.: Classification and mapping of European fuels using a hierarchical, multipurpose fuel classification system, Earth System Science Data, 15, 1287–1315, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-15-1287-2023, 2023; and the previously generated set of canopy fuel parameters (forest canopy height, canopy cover and canopy base height) in Aragoneses, E., García, M., Ruiz-Benito, P., and Chuvieco, E.: Mapping forest canopy fuel parameters at European scale using spaceborne LiDAR and satellite data, Remote Sensing of Environment, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2024.114005, 2024

Chemical-mineralogical features and physical properties of archaeological adobe. The evidence from Tell Zurghul/Nigin (Dhi Qar, Iraq)

    No full text
Analysis of the chemical, mineralogical, hydric, and mechanical properties of earthen mudbricks and plasters from Tell Zurghul/Nigin (Southern Iraq), associated with archaeological buildings dated to the 5th and 3rd millennium BCE. Mudbrick structures are susceptible to rapid deterioration when subjected to environmental conditions and other degradation factors. A comprehensive understanding of the materials used in buildings and their inherent properties is essential for identifying optimal conservation methods for archaeological earthen structures. The study explores construction techniques within a diachronic framework, also considering the geological context and availability of local raw materials, and evaluates the characteristics of mudbricks, including their resistance and durability against weathering, through mineralogical and chemical analyses, and hydric and mechanical tests. Dataset related to the CIVIS3i-European project: EnEAp - Endangered Earthen Architecture. New Challenges in the Conservation and Restoration Practices of Archaeological Earthen Masonries in Western Asia (2022-EnEAp-231; PI: Luca Volpi) funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement N°101034324. The Dataset contains all raw data pertaining to the chemical, mineralogical, petrographic, mechanical and hydric properties of mudbrick samples from the site of Tell Zurghul/Nigin (Dhi Qar province, Iraq), analysed as part of the EnEAp project: Climate: authors' elaboration of climatic data (T Min/Max; RH 9am/6pm; Rainfall) for three reference Years (2001, 2011, 2021) for the site spot (archaeological site of Tell Zurghul/Nigin, South Iraq); 31°22'36.06"N; 46°29'36.24"E). Climatic data were sourced from the WorldClim database (https://worldclim.org/) and plotted using the software QGIS to collect climatic data on the specific site spot. Photo: raw images of samples with scale bar and ID number on the top right. Characterization: colour, mineralogical, chemical and petrographic raw data. Mechanical properties: Scotch Tape Test and Surface Hardness Test raw data. Hydric properties: imbibition time and contact angle test, rain resistance test raw data and photos. </ul

Validating a first educational training system to teach ScratchJr to neurotypical and neurodivergent children according to their preferences and needs

    No full text
Teaching programming to children at early age has been proven to be beneficial. Some research has focused on how to teach pro-gramming to children with special needs. According to Hu-man-Computer Interaction, all users should be involved in the design of their systems (including learning systems). However, evaluation procedures with young children are a complex task, which can be even harder when the young children have some special needs. This paper proposes a validation procedure which was applied with 50 children between 6-7 years to evaluate the usability of a training system to teach them Scratch Jr irrespec-tively whether they are neurotypical or neurodivergent
