Apulia–Microplate Motion Change Following the MW 6.4, 26 November 2019 Durrës, Albania Earthquake
Plate motion steadiness during the earthquake cycle is a central tenet of the plate tectonic theory. The advent of geodesy in geosciences allows measuring plate motions over periods much shorter than such cycle, and thus permits testing the tenet above against observations. Here I focus on the Apulia microplate, a tectonic unit that buffers the Nubia/Eurasia convergence. On 26 November 2019, a (Formula presented.) 6.4 earthquake occurred along the Apulia eastern margin, near the city of Durrës, Albania. I utilize publicly–available position time–series measured at sites within Apulia via the Global Navigation Satellite Systems to infer a temporal change of the whole–Apulia motion from before to after the earthquake. I calculate Euler vectors for the motion of Apulia relative to fixed Eurasia via the classical minimization of the sum of squared misfits. A comparison of Euler vectors and associated surface motions from before to after the earthquake illustrates a 20% speedup that is beyond the impact of data noise and uncertainties at the 95% confidence level virtually anywhere within Apulia, and seems compatible with the direction of coseismic stress drop upon Apulia implied by focal mechanism solutions. I use quantitative models to show that the torque–variation required upon Apulia to generate the observed speedup appears to be consistent with the torque–variation imparted to Apulia by the coseismic stress drop over the Durrës rupture area
Licence to Simulate: When Agent-Based Models Are More Fiction than Function †
Agent-based models are increasingly used to study supply chain systems due to their capacity to capture decentralised behaviour, heterogeneity, and emergent dynamics. However, the mere use of agent-based simulation platforms does not necessarily imply that the models fully exploit the agent-based paradigm. Although this concern, namely, the potential misuse of agent-based models, has been frequently raised in the literature, no previous study has precisely quantified how frequently this issue occurs, especially in the supply chain domain. To address this gap, a systematic review of 58 academic contributions was conducted to evaluate the extent to which agent-based models applied to supply chain contexts adhere to the fundamental principles of agent-based simulation. Specifically, the reviewed works were classified into two categories: Green Flag models, representing coherent and appropriate implementations of agent-based models, and Red Flag models, which fail to capture the essential characteristics of agent-based simulation. The classification was based on key discriminating factors such as the type and number of simulated entities or agents, the nature of agent interactions, and the incorporation of system-level dynamics. Further nuance is provided by two subtypes of Green Flag models: those featuring intelligent agents, and those based on responsive or reactive entities, which might generate emergent dynamics. Our results reveal that almost 64% of the analysed agent-based contributions lack key characteristics to justify the use of agent-based models. Hence, the paper also provides conceptual tools to aid in distinguishing between different agent-based approaches. In conclusion, the present work offers both a theoretical framework and a practical evaluation guide to support the development of future models and to foster critical analysis within the field
Interplay between MRI radiomics and immune gene expression signatures in oral squamous cell carcinoma
With the advances in immunotherapy and the challenge of poor responsiveness in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients, understanding the tumor microenvironment is crucial. Radiogenomics offers the potential to provide pre-operative, non-invasive image-derived immune biomarkers. To this aim, the present study explores the capability of MRI-based radiomics to describe patients' immune state in OSCC. Seven MRI-based radiomic, 29 immune-related gene expression signatures were computed and deconvolution analysis was performed for a subset of OSCC from the BD2Decide database. A correlation-driven analysis identified key associations between radiomic and immune-related signatures and cell populations. Radiomic classifiers of the gene expression signatures were then developed to evaluate their capability to stratify patients based on immune status. MRI-based radiomic models showed promising results in predicting a gene expression signature associated with significant prognostic value for HNSCC patients who underwent radiotherapy (AUC = 0.92), suggesting these models' potential in distinguishing radioresistant from radiosensitive patients, aiding treatment decisions. Additionally, radiomic signatures reflected immune infiltrating cells in our cohort (M1, CD8 + T, B cells). MRI-radiomic signatures and associated models could become non-invasive methods to evaluate the prognosis and treatment choice in OSCC patients. Based on our promising results, and upon external validation, MRI-radiomics could enhance personalized medicine approaches
Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis With Oral Involvement: A Case Report
The primary objective of the present study is the retrospective analysis of a clinical case of oral leishmaniasis treated at Parma Hospital and a review of the literature on mucosal leishmaniasis (ML) with oral cavity involvement. We report the case of a patient diagnosed in 2017 with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis who was referred to our clinic due to the emergence of oral manifestations. Through a detailed review of the clinical documentation, we aim to describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment choices made, and evolution of the disease. Literature describes various pharmacological approaches for leishmaniasis, with treatment selection dependent on clinical presentation. ML does not spontaneously resolve, and systemic therapy is necessary. Due to its rarity, oral leishmaniasis can be challenging to diagnose. This case report can help physicians recognize the clinical presentation of oral lesions, enabling prompt diagnosis and effective treatment
Rethinking the concept of institutionalisation in child protection
The chapter aims to discuss the concept and practices of institutionalisation, with a specific focus on its relevance to the sense and sensibility of social work in the child protection system. In Italy, the process of deinstitutionalisation was officially completed in 2006 following the enactment of Law 149/ 2001, which affirmed children’s right to grow up in a family environment. However, despite these efforts, various forms of institutionalisation persist in child protection due to issues such as managerialism and bureaucratisation.
Institutionalisation, in this context, does not involve only removing children from their families. Instead, it encompasses any form of oppression and exclusion of families from the decision- making process within social services. Furthermore, it refers to interventions that lack transparency, participation, timeliness, defined objectives, and measurable outcomes.
The chapter is structured into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the history and concept of institutionalisation, along with a selective literature review that highlights key features, challenges, and debates surrounding this phenomenon. The second part introduces the Italian Programme of Intervention to Prevent Institutionalisation (P.I.P.P.I.) which adopts a participatory approach (Milani, 2022). This approach integrates sense and sensibility in working with families to address different forms of institutionalisation (Browne, 2017). It promotes co- creation, emphasises accompanying (the concept of accompanying is explored further later but at its heart is about professionals and parents being side- by- side, rather than assuming control, focuses on strengths rather than weakness, and actively involves families and their networks, through multidimensional and intensive interventions). The third part presents an example drawn from the implementation of P.I.P.P.I., illustrating how the orientations, outlined in the previous sections, facilitate family participation and contribute to favourable. outcomes in terms of positive parenting within the realm of child protection; while preventing any resurgence of ‘institutionalisation 2.0’
