Search for a new pseudoscalar decaying into a pair of bottom and antibottom quarks in top-associated production in sqrt(s) = 13 TeV proton–proton collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for a pseudoscalar a produced in association with a top-quark pair, or in association with a single top quark plus a W boson, with the pseudoscalar decaying into b-quarks (a→b bˉ ), is performed using the full Run 2 data sample using a dileptonic decay mode signature. The search covers pseudoscalar boson masses between 12 and 100 GeV and involves both the kinematic regime where the decay products of the pseudoscalar are reconstructed as two standard b-tagged small-radius jets, or merged into a large-radius jet due to its Lorentz boost. No significant excess relative to expectations is observed. Assuming a branching ratio BR(a→b bˉ )=100%, the range of pseudoscalar masses between 50 and 80 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for a coupling of the pseudoscalar to the top quark of 0.5, while a coupling of 1.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level for all masses considered, with the coupling defined as the coefficient of the axial-vector coupling term in the simplified model. This analysis provides the first ATLAS limits on the a→b bˉ decay channel in the top-associated production final state
Magneto-Electro-Elastic Analysis of Doubly-Curved Shells: Higher-Order Equivalent Layer-Wise Formulation
Recent engineering applications increasingly adopt smart materials, whose mechanical responses are sensitive to magnetic and electric fields. In this context, new and computationally efficient modeling strategies are essential to predict the multiphysic behavior of advanced structures accurately. Therefore, the manuscript presents a higher-order formulation for the static analysis of laminated anisotropic magneto-electro-elastic doubly-curved shell structures. The fundamental relations account for the full coupling between the electric field, magnetic field, and mechanical elasticity. The configuration variables are expanded along the thickness direction using a generalized formulation based on the Equivalent Layer-Wise approach. Higher-order polynomials are selected, allowing for the assessment of prescribed values of the configuration variables at the top and bottom sides of solids. In addition, an effective strategy is provided for modeling general surface distributions of mechanical pressures and electromagnetic external fluxes. The model is based on a continuum-based formulation which employs an analytical homogenization of the multifield material properties, based on Mori & Tanaka approach, of a magneto-electro-elastic composite material obtained from a piezoelectric and a piezomagnetic phase, with coupled magneto-electro-elastic effects. A semi-analytical Navier solution is applied to the fundamental equations, and an efficient post-processing equilibrium-based procedure is here used, based on the numerical assessment with the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method, to recover the response of three-dimensional shells. The formulation is validated through various examples, investigating the multifield response of panels of different curvatures and lamination schemes. An efficient homogenization procedure, based on the Mori & Tanaka approach, is employed to obtain the three-dimensional constitutive relation of magneto-electro-elastic materials. Each model is validated against three-dimensional finite-element simulations, as developed in commercial codes. Furthermore, the full coupling effect between the electric and magnetic response is evaluated via a parametric investigation, with useful insights for design purposes of many engineering applications. The paper, thus, provides a formulation for the magneto-electro-elastic analysis of laminated structures, with a high computational efficiency, since it provides results with three-dimensional capabilities with a two-dimensional formulation. The adoption of higher-order theories, indeed, allows us to efficiently predict not only the mechanical response of the structure as happens in existing literature, but also the through-the-thickness distribution of electric and magnetic variables
African music through the eyes of the earliest travelers to West Africa: The Description and historical account of the rich golden kingdom of Guinea by Pieter de Marees (1602)
Beschryvinge ende historiche vant Gout Koninckrijck van Gunea (The description and historical tale of the Golden Kingdom of Africa), written by the Dutch merchant Pieter de Marees upon his return from the African regions on the Gulf of Guinea and published in 1602, was one of the first travel chronicles of Africa whose text and illustrations were based on the author’s direct experience of the region. Beschryvinge, translated into the most important European languages at that time, including Latin, was widely read throughout Europe and it became one of the most cited works on Africa by the later authors and compilers of travel literature. De Marees described geography, flora and fauna of the different regions that he explored, and the customs and culture of the inhabitants that he encountered, including their music: several passages are devoted to the musical instruments
of the region and their performance technique, as well as the context in which
music was performed

Total-reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis (TXRF) of plant's guttation fluids as a new, fast, and non-invasive strategy for the assessment of the bioavailability of Zn, Cd and Pb in contaminated soils
The assessment of potentially toxic elements (PTE) concentration in biofluids is often used for the evaluation of their bioavailability in polluted environments. In the soil-plant system, the analysis of the composition of the xylem fluid can provide a real snapshot of the elements taken up from the soil by the plant. However, xylem collection is often difficult, and, for herbaceous plants, it requires cutting the plant. Alternatively, xylem can be collected through leaves as naturally exuded drops (i.e. guttation), thus in a fully non-destructive way. The guttation phenomenon is yet limited to micro-volumes, therefore the analysis with most techniques is challenging. For the first time, the capability and reliability of total-reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry for the quantification of PTE in plant's guttation fluids was tested in this work. In particular, the study was led on fluids sampled from Lolium rigidum plants grown in a soil contaminated with Zn, Cd, and Pb. Two different TXRF spectrometers were used and compared, equipped either with Mo- or W-anode-based X-ray sources; inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry GF-AAS were used as reference techniques. Differently from these latter, approximately 30 μL of sample were sufficient for the quantification of Zn, Cd, and Pb through TXRF (along with the determination of other essential plant nutrients). Furthermore, the comparison with ICP-OES and/or GF-AAS showed various improvements in using TXRF, including a fast sample preparation, a reduced use of chemicals, the multi-elemental capability. These results suggest that TXRF analysis of plant guttation fluids could represent a novel non-destructive, expeditious and “green” analytical approach for the study of Zn, Cd, Pb and other PTE availability in polluted soils
Expected tracking performance of the ATLAS Inner Tracker at the High-Luminosity LHC
The high-luminosity phase of LHC operations (HL-LHC), will feature a large increase in simultaneous proton-proton interactions per bunch crossing up to 200, compared with a typical leveling target of 64 in Run 3. Such an increase will create a very challenging environment in which to perform charged particle trajectory reconstruction, a task crucial for the success of the ATLAS physics program, and will exceed the capabilities of the current ATLAS Inner Detector (ID). A new all-silicon Inner Tracker (ITk) will replace the current ID in time for the start of the HL-LHC. To ensure successful use of the ITk capabilities in Run 4 and beyond, the ATLAS tracking software has been successfully adapted to achieve state-of-the-art track reconstruction in challenging high-luminosity conditions with the ITk detector. This paper presents the expected tracking performance of the ATLAS ITk based on the latest available developments since the ITk technical design reports
