Designing a near-miss management system
Near-Miss Management Systems (NMMSs) are important tools in support of safety
management in the workplace, despite the absence of a technical standard for the
implementation of such systems. The adoption of a NMMS can support different
perspectives on safety, such as Safety I and Safety II. This chapter presents
reflections on the main processes that should be incorporated into a NMMS and
describes how a NMMS can enhance accident prevention and safety culture through
the different safety perspectives. A case study of a NMMS is presented which
describes the application of a NMMS that supports Safety I and Safety II

Growth and skeletal structure of the parasitic zoantharian Savalia savaglia (Bertoloni, 1819)
The gold coral Savalia savaglia parasitizes gorgonians in coralligenous habitats, causing tissue necrosis in its hosts and overgrowing their skeletons with its coenenchyme. While previous studies have mainly focused on its distribution, biology, ecology, and conservation, limited information is available about its skeletal architecture and growth patterns. Photographic observations of the same specimens over time revealed that S. savaglia grows rapidly during early colonization, slowing once the host is completely overgrown. In the Tavolara Channel (NE Tyrrhenian Sea), large, old dead specimens—radiocarbon-dated to approximately 800 years—resulted from the coalescence of several colonies, highlighting their evolution over a long timescale. Colonies merge when trunks or apical branches come into contact, forming polygonal meshes. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed a laminar skeletal structure covered with small blunt spines, resembling those observed in antipatharians. These spines cement adjacent layers, increasing the skeleton’s resistance to currents and affecting its susceptibility to mechanical damage. These findings support early descriptions by H. Lacaze-Duthiers in the 18th century. Chemical analysis revealed the presence of 7% chitin in the skeleton, along with a high protein content
Anti-neuronal and anti-mitochondrial autoantibodies are associated with lower functional status and more severe respiratory symptoms in post COVID syndrome
GALILEO GALILEI, Trattati morali.
Math and school anxiety: comparing students with and without SLD and the potential role of active breaks
School and math anxiety can hinder learning, especially in students with SLD, who often struggle with Executive Functions and emotion regulation. This paper, based on data from the PRIN PNRR 2022 “Inclusive didactic for enhancing math learning and reducing math anxiety: efficacy of active breaks in the classroom” project, analyzes anxiety traits in a sub-sample of 4150 students from Sicily, Puglia, and Piedmont, comparing SLD and non-SLD students. It also explores Active Breaks as an inclusive strategy to reduce anxiety and support math learning
Surgical Ventricular Restoration: Long-Term Results in Ventricular Remodeling and Risk of Arrhythmias
Background: Surgical ventricular reconstruction (SVR) isperformed in patients with post-infarction left ventricularremodeling with the aim of reducing ventricular volumesthrough the exclusion of most of the scarred tissue and toreduce the incidence of inducible ventricular tachycardia. It is not known whether SVR without concomitant anti-arrhythmic surgical procedures is sufficient for the prevention of late arrhythmias or sudden death. Methods: Patientswho underwent SVR at our center from January 2008 toFebruary 2021 were included in the study. All patients adcomplete clinical and echocardiographic evaluations before surgery, after surgery and at follow up. Results: Overall, 55 patients were included (mean age 61.5±10 years), 45 male (82%). One patient died intraoperatively due to a massive thrombus embolization from the aneurysmal cardiacapex to the coronary ostia. Complete bypass grafting wasfirst performed when indicated in 28 patients (51%); concomitant mitral valve treatment was performed in 5 patients (9%). A total of 19 patients under went rescue percutaneous coronary intervention (35%). An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was implanted in 13 patients (24%) in the postoperative period (almost 3 months post-op). All surviving patients underwent follow-up (mean 8.5±4.5 years) with complete clinical and echocardiographic examination. The Cox regression model revealed that, after accountingfor confounding factors such as sex, age, smoking, hyper-tension, previous stroke, diabetes, ICD implantation doesnot significantly improve patient survival. However, a univariate analysis comparing total mortality and sudden death in patients with vs without ICD showed a significant difference. Conclusions: SVR is effective in improving patientsymptoms and ventricular function. However, as this technique does not involve ablative treatments, the risk of sudden death remains high and patients should undergo electrophysiological re-evaluation for preventive ICD implantation
