    Get PDF

Sensing Robots and Social Odor: How Relational Engagement and Trust Change

    No full text
Exploring the interaction dynamics between humans and robots also entails examining the exchange of multisensory signals. In this light, this study explores the role of social odors (putative pheromones) in shaping human-robot interactions (HRI) beyond the conventional focus on visual and auditory cues. Our research examines how these odors influence relational engagement (RE; assessed as co-presence and social presence) and trust (dispositional and situational) during interactions with the humanoid social robot (HSR) NAO. The robot was also equipped with a male or female voice, to better counteract odor-related gender differences. Thirty participants engaged in storytelling sessions with NAO under different sensory conditions. Our findings indicate odors significantly affecting trust, especially when resembling female pheromones. Conversely, odors had a nuanced influence on RE, despite participants reporting greater CoPre than SoPre. Additionally, a bidirectional relationship between SoPre and trust emerged, reinforced by sensory congruence. These results highlight the significance of sensory alignment in shaping socio-relational and trust dynamics and emphasize the potential of olfactory stimuli in enhancing human-robot interactions. By deepening our understanding of the complex interplay among olfactory cues, voice gender, RE, and trust within HRIs, we provide valuable insights for crafting and deploying HSRs that are more relatable and trustworthy

PERSONAGGI IN CERCA DI AUTORE: NIETZSCHE, LA DIFFICOLTÀ E IL DESIDERIO DI DIRE “IO”

    Get PDF
In this article, I explore the tension between the difficulty and the desire to affirm the “I” in Nietzschean philosophy. Firstly, I will show how Nietzsche deconstructs the subject as a stable entity, seeing it as a linguistic illusion, while at the same time reevaluating its construction as an artistic process. The “I” thus becomes a dynamic expression of the will to power, to be consciously shaped. In the second part of the article, I will engage with Leiter’s and Nehamas’ interpretations of the relationship between fatalism and self-determination, arguing that Nietzsche does not advocate surrendering to fate but rather an ethical work on one’s form of life. In this perspective, his philosophy is not just theory but a transformative practice of the self

    No full text

Designing Data Spaces: Navigating the European Initiatives Along Technical Specifications

    No full text
The emerging paradigm of data economy can constitute an unmissable and attractive opportunity for companies that aim to consider their data as valuable assets. To fully leverage this opportunity, data owners need to have specific and precise guarantees regarding the protection of data they share from unauthorized access, but also from their misuse. Thus, it becomes crucial to provide mechanisms for secure and trusted data sharing capable of protecting data ownership rights and specifying agreed-upon methods of use. In this sense, data space technology can represent a promising and innovative solution in data management that aims to promote effective and trusted data exchange and sharing. By providing standardized technologies and legal frameworks, data spaces seek to eliminate barriers to data sharing among companies and organizations and, ultimately, fostering the development of innovative value-added services. By promoting interoperability and data sovereignty, data spaces play a crucial role in enhancing collaboration and innovation in the data economy. In this paper, the key European initiatives are collected and organized, with the goal of identifying the most recent advances in the direction of harmonizing the specifications, to facilitate the seamless integration between different solutions and foster secure, flexible and scalable data spaces implementations. The results of this study provide guidelines that can support data space designers in driving the choice of the most proper technical specifications to adopt, among the available open-source solutions

Exploring ChatGPT effectiveness in addressing direct patient queries on colorectal cancer screening

    No full text
Background and study aims: Recent studies showed that large language models (LLMs) could enhance understanding of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, potentially increasing participation rates. However, a limitation of these studies is that questions posed to LLMs are generated by experts. This study aimed to investigate ChatGPT-4o effectiveness in answering CRC screening queries directly generated by patients. Patients and methods: Ten consecutive subjects aged 50 to 69 years who were eligible for the Italian national CRC screening program but not actively involved were enrolled. Four possible scenarios for CRC screening were presented to each participant and they were asked to formulate one question per scenario to gather additional information. These questions were then posed to ChatGPT in two separate sessions. The responses were evaluated by five senior experts, who rated each answer based on three criteria: accuracy, completeness, and comprehensibility, using a 5-point Likert scale. In addition, the same 10 patients who created the questions assessed the answers, rating each response as complete, understandable, and trustworthy on a dichotomous scale (yes/no). Results: Experts rated the responses with mean scores of 4.1 ± 1.0 for accuracy, 4.2 ± 1.0 for completeness, and 4.3 ± 1.0 for comprehensibility. Patients rated responses as complete in 97.5%, understandable in 95%, and trustworthy in 100% of cases. Consistency over time was confirmed by an 86.8% similarity between session responses. Conclusions: Despite variability in questions and answers, ChatGPT confirmed good performances in answering CRC screening queries, even when used directly by patients
