Editorial: The crucial issue of spatial and temporal scale in ecological indication

    No full text
The theoretical foundation of ecological indication is based on measurable indicators and indices that are conducive to the provision of aggregate information regarding ecosystem health, functioning, and changes (Turnhout et al., 2007). These instruments serve a dual purpose: they facilitate the interpretation of systems and the communication of complex ecological information to various stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners, and the public. This, in turn, facilitates more effective decision-making processes concerning environmental conservation and restoration. Consequently, decision-makers frequently employ ecological indication to engage with the public. It is therefore crucial that ecological indicators and indices, which are the focus of the journal Ecological Indicators, are defined and quantified in a scientifically defensible way

Youth players management and financial performance in football industry

    No full text
This research aims to contribute to the scientific debate on financial performance in football organizations by evaluating the enabling role of talent management practices. Grounded in Resource-Based Theory (RBT) and Transaction-Cost Economics (TCE), the analysis highlights the financial impact of strategic decisions made by sports directors. Using a two-step machine learning approach, the study reveals that investing in academies can yield higher financial returns. The findings confirm that teams adopting this strategy are better positioned to meet the financial objectives set by international and national regulators, such as UEFA and FIFA. By addressing the knowledge gap on the role of youth sector development in financial performance, this research offers valuable insights for both academia and sports management

Il «corteggiatore del caso». Tommaso Landolfi e il gioco d'azzardo

    No full text

Induced mitochondrial deficit by NDUFS3 transient silencing reduces RAB7 expression and causes lysosomal dysfunction in pancreatic cancer cells

Background: RAB7 is a small GTPase with multiple cellular roles, regulating late endocytic trafficking and lysosomal biogenesis, influencing mitochondria-lysosome crosstalk, and contributing to many mitochondrial processes. Mitochondrial dysfunctions are widely reported in cancer and the development of cancer therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria gained momentum in recent years. Mitochondrial impairment can cause alterations of mitochondria-lysosome crosstalk and can influence lysosomal function. Here, we used cell models of pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers worldwide, to cause a transient mild mitochondrial deficit lowering NDUFS3 protein levels in order to investigate the consequences on RAB7 and on the late endocytic pathway and, thus, the contribution of the mitochondria-lysosomes communication alterations to cancer progression. Methods: NDUFS3 and RAB7 downregulation was obtained by RNA interference (RNAi). Seahorse assays, Western blot analysis, mitochondrial staining, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to assess silencing effects on mitochondrial structure and functioning. Western blotting was used to investigate expression of late endocytic pathway proteins and of the invasion marker vimentin. Confocal microscopy was used to analyze the mitochondrial network and lysosomal assessment. Zymography was performed to evaluate the ability to digest the extracellular matrix linked to cancer migration. SRB and colony assays were performed to assess cancer viability and proliferation. Wound healing assay and FluoroBlok membranes were used to determine migration and invasiveness. Results: In pancreatic cancer cells, transient silencing of the NDUFS3 protein caused mitochondrial deficit, slower oxidative metabolism, and mitochondrial morphology alterations. In this context, we observed RAB7 downregulation and impairment of the late endocytic pathway. In addition, NDUFS3-silenced RAB7-downregulated cells showed less invasive tumorigenic potential revealed by reduced levels of vimentin and other Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition proteins, decreased viability, migration and invasiveness. Moreover, we found that modulation of RAB7 expression may regulate vimentin levels and influence mitochondrial morphology and levels of mitochondrial proteins. Conclusions: Overall, our data show that mitochondrial deficit determines alterations of the crosstalk with lysosomes, leading to dysfunctions, and that this process is regulated by RAB7 acting as an oncogene. This highlights the synergic role of RAB7 and mitochondrial dysfunction, focusing on a cellular mechanism that may boost the effect of mitochondrial dysfunction in the cells, leading to the reduction of the tumorigenic potential

Ortensia De Meo e il movimento femminile socialista napoletano

Ortensia De Meo and the Neapolitan socialist women’s movement. The paper constitutes a contribution to the research strand on women’s political militancy. In the context of the “new biography” approach, it analyses the political and private experiences of Ortensia De Meo and the group of activists who, alongside her, established the first socialist women’s organisation in the southern Italian city of Naples. The group is composed of Ortensia De Meo, Ida and Ines Garbarini, Adele Barbarossa, and sisters Enrichetta and Stella Giannelli. It represents a minority but tenacious group of militants from diverse generations, backgrounds, and social origins, unified by a profound sense of solidarity and a shared commitment to advancing a comprehensive movement for social change

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention or Minimally Invasive Coronary Bypass for Isolated Left Anterior Descending Artery Disease

: The optimal revascularization strategy for isolated left anterior descending (LAD) artery disease, minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), remains a subject of debate. This updated meta-analysis aimed to compare the long- term outcomes of MIDCAB versus PCI for patients with isolated LAD artery disease. Three databases were systematically searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and adjusted studies. Primary outcomes included long-term survival and repeat target vessel revascularization (TVR). The secondary endpoint was long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). Hazards ratios (HR) and Confidence Intervals (CI) were calculated for long-term outcomes and a random effects model was used. Sensitivity analyses included subgroups analysis of stent-type. Nine articles, comprising four RCTs, totaling 2,168 patients (MIDCAB=1,086 and PCI=1,080) were included. The weighted mean follow-up was 4.35±4.9 years. Long-term survival was comparable between MIDCAB and PCI (HR=0.76; 95% CI, 0.58-1.00; p=0.05). MIDCAB was associated with a significantly lower rate of repeat TVR (HR=0.35; 95% CI, 0.25-0.49; p<0.0001) and a reduced risk of MACEs (HR=0.59; 95% CI, 0.43-0.81; p<0.0001), although the difference was not evident in subgroup analysis comparing MIDCAB and PCI with drug-eluting stent (HR=0.66; 95% CI, 0.46-1.06; p=0.09). In conclusion, this meta-analysis of RCTs and adjusted studies shows that in patients with isolated LAD lesion, MIDCAB and PCI exhibit comparable long-term survival. However, MIDCAB is associated with a significantly reduced risk of long-term repeat TVR and MACEs compared to PCI

A Dynamic Spatial Indicator of the Surface Water Quality

    No full text
The evaluation of water quality usually considers the effect of different physical and chemical parameters, which can vary across space and time. In this context, it is crucial to build a spatio-temporal composite indicator which might provide useful insights for a sustainable development and might support strategies for saving water and controlling pollution. For this aim, an advanced Geographically weighted principal components analysis indexed in time, based on the use of geostatistical tools, is proposed. Thus, this technique is applied on parameters observed for ten years, for the superficial rivers of Emilia-Romagna Region, which presents a complex water system

From the late 19th to the early 20th century, Argentina experienced a wave of mass migration due to political, economic, and social instability in Europe. This study examines how idiomatic expressions in Argentine Spanish incorporate Italianisms and Rioplatense slang (lunfardismos), focusing on linguistic contact, transcoding, and performativity. The integration of these lexical and phraseological elements occurred through direct borrowings, phraseological calques, and neological formations influenced by both languages, shaped by continuous interactions between immigrant and local communities. Based on a corpus of 179 phraseological units (PUs) from the Diccionario fraseológico del habla argentina. Frases, dichos y locuciones (DiFHA), compiled by Barcia and Pauer, the study analyzes semantic and structural changes resulting from this exchange. The findings highlight linguistic contact, reflecting the interaction between Italian and Rioplatense Spanish; transcoding, illustrating the adaptation of linguistic elements to a new sociocultural context; and performativity, demonstrating how these expressions acquire distinct meanings in daily communication. By examining these phraseological units, the research reveals how language embodies Argentina’s migratory and cultural history, showing how linguistic contact enriches communication and identity through the interaction of different communities
